Following the suspension of classes in Morocco due to the health crisis related to COVID-19, an adaptation of the pedagogical intervention of teaching is required. Distance learning is an essential lever contributing to ensuring the educational continuity of students. In this sense, our contribution is to ensure the educational continuity of students during the period of containment through the use of a digital manual. The digital textbook is made available to students of the 1st year of the qualifying secondary education. Through a tracking grid, we measured the student engagement during two different periods without and with the use of the digital textbook. The results show that the digital textbook was able to elicit student engagement in the completion of learning activities with a remarkable improvement of 57.1% in student engagement rate over the two periods (t (273) = 11.059, p < 0.001). Student engagement while using a digital textbook can lead to better academic performance (r = 0.743, p = 0.000 < 0.01). No one can deny the importance of distance learning as a powerful tool that allows teachers to improve their professional practices in the presence of solid, quality instruction in the classroom that promotes the acquisition of skills and the development of competencies in students.

Student engagement allows educational institutions to make better decisions regarding teaching methodologies, methods for evaluating the quality of education, and ways to provide timely feedback. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, identifying cognitive student engagement in distance learning has been a challenge in higher education institutions. In this study, we implemented a non-self-report method assessing students’ heart rate data to identify the cognitive engagement during active learning activities. Additionally, as a supplementary tool, we applied a previously validated self-report method. This study was performed in distance learning lessons on a group of university students in Bogota, Colombia. After data analysis, we validated five hypotheses and compared the results from both methods. The results confirmed that the heart rate assessment had a statistically significant difference with respect to the baseline during active learning activities, and this variance could be positive or negative. In addition, the results show that if students are previously advised that they will have to develop an a new task after a passive learning activity (such as a video projection), their heart rate will tend to increase and consequently, their cognitive engagement will also increase. We expect this study to provide input for future research assessing student cognitive engagement using physiological parameters as a tool.

Abstract The general aim of this study is to determine the effects of learning management systems supported by social networking sites on learners’ academic achievements in distance education. The study group consisted of 75 undergraduate students from a state university in eastern Turkey. The data for the study, in which an experimental research design was used, were collected through an achievement test, which consisted of 40 multiple-choice questions. Within the scope of the research, a learning management system and a social networking site were utilized in a distance education course. As a result of the research, it was seen that social network supported distance learning activities created a more positive effect on the achievements of the learners than the distance learning activities. Also, it was determined that social network supported distance education activities were more effective in the acquisition of behaviours at the knowledge level of the cognitive domain than activities in other groups; however, the groups were not different from each other in relation to the acquisition of behaviours at the comprehension level of the cognitive domain. In this context, it was concluded that the learning management systems used in distance education should be supported by social networking sites to increase the academic achievement of learners.

The article discusses the possibilities of distance learning. Today, distance learning is intensively included in the educational sphere, which can be explained by a number of advantages of this pedagogical system. Moreover, some experts consider such training to be the most effective form of human education, regardless of age, since the training tools created on the basis of modern media in combination with new technological solutions, as well as modern methodological support, in principle, allow you to independently master the ways of learning activities, create conditions for independent development of subjects of the educational cycle. Distance learning opportunities are a set of methods, forms and means of interaction with a person in the process of independent, but controlled development of a certain array of knowledge. The training technology is based on the Foundation of a certain content and must meet the requirements of its presentation. The content of the proposed knowledge is accumulated in special courses and modules designed for distance learning and based on the existing educational standards in the country, as well as in data and knowledge banks, video libraries, and so on.

Covid-19 has now attacked Indonesia, where the spread of the disease is very fast. Not only in Indonesia, but all corners of the world are currently experiencing a health crisis. In the beginning, the spread of Covid-19 had an impact on economic activity which began to sluggish. This also has an impact on the education system in Indonesia. Until several countries decided to close schools and universities. In an effort to prevent the spread of covid-19, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends temporarily stopping activities that would potentially cause crowds. Even during the outbreak, covid-19 in Indonesia, there were many ways that the government did to prevent its spread through social distancing. Kemendikbud instructed through the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) Directorate of Higher Education Circular No. 1 of 2020 concerning the prevention of the spread of covid-19 in the world of Education to organize distance learning and advise students to learn from their homes. Teachers and students are starting to be required to follow the current situation by using technology as a distance learning medium. One of the media that is being favored by teachers as a learning medium is the Google Classroom application. This application is an application that can make it easier for students and teachers to create effective learning. Given that students today are a generation who are very familiar with the use of technology. The use of technology in learning is an alternative method used by teachers during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Currently, technological developments, especially in the field of information technology and computers, are developing very rapidly. In current conditions, the world is shocked by the presence of a deadly virus called the Covid-19 virus. Because of the virus, all human activities are disrupted and even stopped, one of which is teaching and learning activities in schools. With the development of technology like now, we can take advantage of this technology to help students in the learning process at school. Web design is an alternative way to keep the learning process going. With this distance learning process students can still learn and receive the material given.

Abstract Physics demonstration learning has been carried out with the theme "Physics Experiments You Can Do at Home During the Covid-19 Pandemic". This activity was carried out by making a simple physics experiment video entitled The Chladni Plate Concept which was then broadcasted online via a zoom platform to students of SMA Negeri 40. The theme carried was in accordance with the learning curriculum for Senior High School (SMA) students. This activity was carried out as an effort to respond to the Covid- 19 pandemic situation which requires students to carry out learning activities at home online, so it is hoped that this activity can increase understanding and stimulate student enthusiasm during the Distance Learning (PJJ) period. As confirmation that the activity gained enthusiasm and was able to achieve these goals, a research instrument was made consisting of several parameters which the instrument was distributed to the teacher and all participants. 96% confirmed that the material presented was very useful during a pandemic. This indicates that the physics demonstration presented in the form of a video can be an alternative for students of SMA Negeri 40 Jakarta in learning physics, especially in discussing physics experiments regarding the Chladni Plate Concept.

Recent research on digital textbook use and development suggests that principles may reflect the cross-disciplinary boundaries. There are multiple examples that evidence this idea. Therefore, the purpose of this chapter is to enrich the theoretical understanding of design and to broaden the empirical research base by adopting a cross-disciplinary focus. The chapter explores the fundamental principles of digital textbooks and describes the power of cross-principles through a new metasystems method, which allows one to synthesize a functional framework consisting from self-regulation, personalization, feedback diversity, clarity, dynamicity and flexibility and ergonomic environments. These principles are assembled from general norms derived from principles of philosophy, pedagogy, psychology, cybernetics, and knowledge management. The use of cross-principles in the learning design of digital textbooks is a relatively new phenomenon, but with great potential to achieve the guaranteed learning outcomes. Conclusions and future research directions are provided at the end.

The research described in this chapter aimed to find the correlation between participation in virtual extracurricular activities (ECAs) and student engagement during distance learning at a secondary school located in Northern California. Data was gathered on current student engagement through grades, attendance, teacher perception, and student and legal guardian opinion during the first two quarters of the 2020-2021 school year. Furthermore, data was gathered on student, teacher, and legal guardian opinions on the correlation between participation in virtual ECAs and student engagement during distance learning. The data revealed that there is a significant loss of student engagement during distance learning and that students are not participating in virtual ECA's due to a lack of interest. This data can be corroborated by the number of Ds and Fs students are obtaining which indicates a significant loss in student academic success. Looking forward to increase student engagement, the school must focus on creating virtual ECAs that pertain to student interest.
