This study assessed the learning perception of undergraduate medical students on three types of teaching (classical/online/hybrid), in relation to coping strategies, stress, and social support, in the context of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Additionally, we explored gender differences and the perceived usefulness of teaching. 201 students (48 men, 153 women; mean age = 22.900, SD = 2.830) participated in the study. They answered a Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, a Brief Cope Scale, a Student-life Stress Inventory, a visual analog scale for usefulness, and a survey collecting their perceptions about learning across teaching types. Results point out a preference for classical teaching, followed by the hybrid and online formats. Online teaching was identified as more advantageous in terms of time management and seeking information. Denial and substance use were statistically associated with poor communication, bad time using, and impaired learning. Both stress and social support had ambivalent associations with learning perceptions. Gender differences were limited to behavioral disengagement and higher social support perceived by women. Although classical teaching was globally perceived as the most useful, online teaching was considered desirable by male urban respondents. These data may contribute to the strategic growth and refinement of web-based teaching methods in medical universities.

Coping strategies used by an individual for stress determine its effect on health and the body’s functioning. Academic challenges make the first year medical students disparately susceptible to it. A cross-sectional study was conducted among the first year undergraduate medical students of a private medical college in Thrissur, Kerala to find the prevalence of stress and the coping strategies used with the help of pretested and validated questionnaire containing the Perceived Stress Scale 10 (PSS-10) and Brief COPE Inventory. 73% of the students had moderate stress and, 20% of the students had high-stress scores. Self-distraction and religion {(6.66 ±1.52), (6.55 ±1.58)}were the most common coping strategies used by the boys and girls respectively. The prevalence of stress was high among the first year undergraduate medical students and those with high-stress scores were found to use maladaptive coping strategies.

Introduction: The coronavirus pandemic has involved nearly all the countries of the world. The lockdowns and closure of educational institutes to reduce the risk of disease transmission has brought a change in the medium of teaching as most educational institutes have moved to the online mode. There is a widespread increase in stress as the number of cases and mortality associated with Coronavirus 2019 disease (COVID-19) continue each day. Aim: To assess the stress status of first year undergraduate medical students in reference to the coronavirus pandemic and the perception of first year undergraduate medical students in reference to the E-learning being carried out during the coronavirus pandemic. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional web-based online survey that was conducted using a questionnaire in August 2020 at Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, New Delhi, India. The questionnaire was prepared and reviewed by the involved faculty members of the project and it was approved by a faculty from Department of Psychiatry. Reliability of questionnaire was measured using Cronbach’s alpha (0.89). A questionnaire with 20 questions was administered via Google forms to all 100 students of first year MBBS course. Some of the questions in the questionnaire were framed to assess the stress status of the students; some were designed to study students’ perception of E-learning. Data was represented as the percentage distribution of response for each question. Results: Ninety five responses were received, after accounting for exclusion factors; data was compiled for 91 respondents. Out of the 91 participants in the study, 48.4% were males (n=44) and 51.6% were females (n=47). Most of the students in this study (84.6%) felt that online teaching had helped in learning Physiology theory; around 43% students found online practical teaching useful. Around 39% students have reported internet connectivity issues all the time while 59% faced problem sometimes. Total 51.6% of students had difficulty in accessibility to devices. Due to coronavirus pandemic, 37.4% of students have reported to be under stress. Around 33% reported feeling unsafe all the time while 39.5% felt unsafe some of the times. Conclusion: Students found online teaching more helpful in learning Physiology theory than practical. Majority of class reported internet connectivity issues. All the responders agreed that this pandemic affected their regular life. Most of the students felt that online classes have helped them to remain positive and motivated towards study.

Background: Medical students are facing huge challenge due to COVID-19 pandemic which has impacted their learning and has become vital stressor and affecting their psychological well-being. The objective of this study was to assess the perception of the stress among the undergraduate medical students and their coping strategies pre and post lockdown. Materials and Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 321 undergraduate medical students at Adichunchanagiri Institute of Medical Sciences, Mandya, Karnataka, India. This study was initiated after getting approval from the Institutional Ethical Committee. After obtaining consent the extent of the students stress was assessed using Perceived Stress Scale and Brief COPE was used to assess their coping strategies. Scores were analysed using paired t test in Microsoft excel/ SPSS software. Results: On paired 't' t test the mean difference in total score was 0.68 and the p value was 0.166 for scores of perceived stress scale, similarly the mean difference in scores of sub groups under coping strategies was 0.90 and 0.49 with 'p' value 0.173 and 0.498 respectively. Conclusion: Overall, there was not much of difference in scores of perceived stress scale and coping strategies before and after lockdown. Except for minor difference across age group and scores of specic coping strategies which was again not statistically signicant.

Abstract. The present study focuses on gender effects and interactions between gender, type of stressful situation, and age-group in coping strategies in childhood and adolescence. The sample consisted of N = 1990 children and adolescents (957 boys, 1033 girls; grade levels 3-8). Participants responded to a coping questionnaire (Fragebogen zur Erhebung von Stress und Stressbewältigung im Kindes- und Jugendalter, SSKJ 3-8; Lohaus, Eschenbeck, Kohlmann, & Klein-Heßling, 2006 ) with the five subscales: seeking social support, problem solving, avoidant coping, palliative emotion regulation, and anger-related emotion regulation. Repeated measures ANOVAs with Gender and Grade Level as the between-subject factors and Situation (social, academic) as the within-subject factor were performed separately for each of the subscales. In general, girls scored higher in seeking social support and problem solving, whereas boys scored higher in avoidant coping. These three main effects were further modified by significant Gender × Situation interactions and for both seeking social support and avoidant coping by significant Gender × Situation × Grade Level interactions. Compared to the academic situation (homework), gender differences were more pronounced for the social situation (argument with a friend), especially in adolescence. The results are discussed with respect to a gender-specific development of coping strategies.

World Health Organization (WHO) had promulgated Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) as a pandemic in the early year 2020. Following that, the National Security Council of Malaysia had announced the implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO) in March 2020 to curb the disease. This social distancing measure had inevitably induced undesirable psychological responses among the public, including medical students. In this study, we aim to determine the psychological responses of medical students during the MCO period and their coping strategies. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 245 medical students of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) from 24th to 30th April 2020, using an online questionnaire comprising demographic data, Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale (DASS-21), and Brief COPE questionnaire. Nearly 30% of medical students experienced stress, anxiety, or depression. Among all, 9.4% had reported severe anxiety. There were significant differences between avoidance coping strategies and negative psychological responses. In general, the medical students preferred approach coping strategies (M = 29.19, SD = 9.27). Religion (M= 5.62, SD =2.10) was the most favored coping strategy while the least had abused substance (M=2.16, SD.77). A significant statistical difference was revealed in the choice of coping between the genders, for positive reframing, religion, humour, and substance abuse.  Pre-clinical students were noted to have significant stress and anxiety levels and more inclined to use avoidance coping strategies.  Psychological interventions are essential to address the mental health problems among university students during current and future disasters based on the understanding of their coping strategies.

Background: The current ongoing coronavirus-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has brought a sea change in education teaching learning system, ways and methodologies. Online teaching has been enforced suddenly for students worldwide. It has become a substitute to traditional teaching. Aware of the fact that the Corona pandemic has changed the way of learning teaching, we want to find out what students think about their real predispositions. This study is to compare and evaluate the opinions, preferences, experiences of undergraduate medical students during continuous online classes since the onset of Pandemic times.Methods: A sample size of 115 undergraduate medical students of batch 2019 was taken for the study done in Sardar Patel Medical College of Bikaner, Rajasthan, India in October 2020.A questionnaire was prepared using Google forms application and was filled by students online.Results: Majority of students had a preference and interest for traditional mode of teaching, they agreed on better understanding of concepts and details of topic and grasping more of knowledge through it. But majority of students also agreed that they are getting more time to study now with online teaching.Conclusions: This study gives an in depth insight into the current ongoing online teaching methodologies and throws light on changing acceptance of students to the current COVID-19 pandemic ways of teaching and on welcoming a better “blended learning” pattern in the upcoming Post COVID-19 new normal times.

The present study was designed to assess and compare perceived stress and coping strategies in parents of children with autism and parents of intellectual disability. For this purpose, Questionnaire on resource and stress and Brief cope scale were administered on 30 parents of children with autism and intellectual disability, selected from Hyderabad. For statistical analysis, Means, standard deviation and t- test were used. Results revealed that there was no significance in Perceived Stress and Coping Strategies for parents of children with Autism and parents of intellectual disability. Parents of children with Autism are experiencing more Stress and seeking more social support than the parents of Intellectual disability.

Background: The unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic has caused a sudden shift towards the exclusive adoption of online teaching, forming the primary source of medical education and enabling students to continue to learn remotely. The role in the academic arena has gained importance furthermore considering the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic causing educational institutions around the world over to close down and thus giving rise to multiple challenges at all stages and levels of education in particular for students, due to the lockdown situation. Hence the present study was carried out to assess the perceptions of undergraduate medical students regarding e-learning during COVID-19 pandemic.Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out from April 2021 to June 2021 among 404 undergraduate medical students of IIMSR Medical College, Badnapur, Jalna, Maharashtra. The questionnaire had eliciting information about socio-demographic profile, knowledge and perception regarding advantages and challenges of e-learning was administered to them. Data was entered in Microsoft excel and analyzed using statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS) version-13.0.Results: About 87% students were of opinion that e-learning was not useful and not motivated to use it and 38% students’ think it’s beneficial as has interactive mode, but 62% students think otherwise. Only 36% are of opinion that e-learning will improve their performance. Majority 78% students think e-learning will not help in better understanding then formal teaching methods.Conclusions: Undergraduate medical students were still more inclined towards traditional teaching rather than e-learning. Faculty members should take necessary measures for improving e-learning facility and quality to help with better learning.

Objectives: The objective of the study was to evaluate the perception of the undergraduate students about the online platform developed, through a long-term, qualitative study. COVID-19 enforced initial lockdown and later closing of educational institutes, including medical colleges in India. The circumstances lead to adoption of online means of teaching for teaching the medical undergraduate students. An interactive dual-mode online platform was introduced for teaching and assessment of undergraduate students in our institute also. Materials and Methods: Narrative experiences and reflections of students while attending online classes through the designed and delivered “interactive dual-mode online platform” were collected through open ended, anonymous Google forms. Results: Students were satisfied with the online learning as a stop-gap arrangement. Although they were facing technical snags and internet issues, they were happy that their syllabus was being covered and they were receiving formative assessment, in whatever quantity and mode possible. However, they were concerned about the lack of clinical training. Conclusion: To tide over crisis period, online teaching can be used, but one should shift to onsite teaching as soon as possible, particularly for medical students.
