Biodiesel is an alternative, eco-friendly and renewable source of energy. It can be produced from a wide range of feedstocks which can be grown in marginal land use. It has drawn more attention to the researchers. In this study, the oil extraction, biodiesel conversion, and physiochemical properties of Macadamia (Macadamia integrifolia) and Grapeseed (Vitis vinifera) biodiesels are presented. The experimental investigation of diesel engine performance, emissions and combustion characteristics were conducted using B5 (5% biodiesel and 95% diesel by volume) and B10 (10% biodiesel and 90% diesel by volume) blends. The engine performance parameters, such as brake power (BP), brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC), and brake thermal efficiency (BTE) have been investigated in this experiment. The emission parameters, for example, carbon monoxide (CO), the ratio of CO2/CO, nitrogen oxide (NOx), hydrocarbon (HC), particulate matter (PM) have been measured during the experiment. Finally, the combustion parameters such as cylinder pressure (CP) were recorded, and heat release rate (HRR) was analysed and compared with that of diesel fuel. The study revealed that the Macadamia biodiesel performed better than Grapeseed biodiesel and behaved closely to that of diesel fuel. A significant reduction of engine emissions was found in the case of Macadamia biodiesel with a minimal reduction of engine performance. Further analysis of energy, exergy and tribological characteristics of the Macadamia biodiesel is recommended for assessing its feasibility for commercial application.

In this study, engine performance on thermal factors for different biodiesels has been studied and compared with diesel fuel. Biodiesels were produced from Pongamia pinnata (PP), Calophyllum inophyllum (CI), waste cooking oil (WCO), and acid oil. Depending on their free fatty acid content, they were subjected to the transesterification process to produce biodiesel. The main characterizations of density, calorific range, cloud, pour, flash and fire point followed by the viscosity of obtained biodiesels were conducted and compared with mineral diesel. The characterization results presented benefits near to standard diesel fuel. Then the proposed diesel engine was analyzed using four blends of higher concentrations of B50, B65, B80, and B100 to better substitute fuel for mineral diesel. For each blend, different biodiesels were compared, and the relative best performance of the biodiesel is concluded. This diesel engine was tested in terms of BSFC (brake-specific fuel consumption), BTE (brake thermal efficiency), and EGT (exhaust gas temperature) calculated with the obtained results. The B50 blend of acid oil provided the highest BTE compared to other biodiesels at all loads while B50 blend of WCO provided the lowest BSFC compared to other biodiesels, and B50 blends of all biodiesels provided a minimum % of the increase in EGT compared to diesel.

In this experimental study, a four stroke diesel engine was conducted to investigate the effect of adding water-based ferrofluid to diesel fuel on engine performance. To our knowledge, Magnetic nanoparticles had not been used before. To this end, emulsified diesel fuels of 0, 0.4, and 0.8 water-based ferrofluid/Diesel ratios by volume were used as fuel. The ferrofluid used in this study was a handmade water-based ferrofluid prepared by the authors. The results show that adding water-based ferrofluid to diesel fuel has a perceptible effect on engine performance, increasing the brake thermal efficiency relatively up to 12%, and decreasing the brake specific fuel consumption relatively up to 11% as compared to diesel fuel. In addition, the results indicate that increasing ferrofluid concentration will magnify the results. Furthermore, it was found that magnetic nanoparticles can be collected at the engine exhaust using magnetic bar.

Nowadays, more researches focus on protecting the environment. Present investigation concern with the effectiveness of Oxygen Enriched hydrogen- HHO gas addition on performance, emission and combustion characteristics of a DI diesel engine. Here the Oxygen Enriched hydrogen-HHO gas was produced by the process of water electrolysis. When potential difference is applied across the anode and cathode electrodes of the electrolyzer, water is transmuted into Oxygen Enriched hydrogen-HHO gas. The produced gas was aspirated into the cylinder along with intake air at the flow rates of 1 lpm and 3.3 lpm. The results show that when Oxygen Enriched hydrogen-HHO gas was inducted, the brake thermal efficiency of the engine increased by 11.06%, Carbon monoxide decreased by 15.38%, Unburned hydrocarbon decreased by 18.18%, Carbon dioxide increased by 6.06%, however, the NOX emission increased by 11.19%.

An Experimental investigation was carried out to determine performance, emissions and combustion characteristics of diesel engine using nanoaluminum oxide (n-Al2O3) blended diesel fuel. The n-Al2O3 of size 40 nm was blended into diesel fuel. The different dosing levels studied were 250mg, 500mg, 750mg, and 1000mg. Each dosing levels of nanoparticles were mixed with one litre of diesel to prepare test fuels. The n-Al2O3was dispersed by means of an ultrasonic vibrator in order to produce uniform dispersion of n-Al2O3 in the diesel fuel. nanoAl2O3possess better combustion characteristics and enhanced surface-area-to-volume ratio and hence allows more amount of diesel to react with the oxidizer which in turn enhances the burning efficiency of the test fuels. The diesel fuel with and without n-Al2O3 additive were tested in a direct injection diesel engine at different load conditions and the results revealed that a considerable enhancement in the brake thermal efficiency and substantial reduction in content of NOX and unburnt hydrocarbon (UBHC) at all the loads compared to neat diesel were observed due to nanoAl2O3’s better combustion characteristics and improved degree of mixing with air.

Biofuels are an alternative fuel currently being developed to reduce the diesel-engine environmental impact. The release of carbon dioxide (CO2), nitric oxide (NO) and black smoke (BS) becomes an issue derived from diesel engines even in lean-mixture combustion causing an adverse effect to human health. The main aim of the research study is to present the use of biofuels, a mixture of diesel and 10 % palm oil ethyl ester (PEE10) and PEE10 blended with bioethanol from 5 to 20 %, compared with conventional diesel fuel. The biofuels were run on a high-speed direct injection diesel engine at a constant speed of 3,000 rpm under various loads. The use of PEE10 resulted in brake thermal efficiency (BTE) reduction by 2 % and brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) incrementation by 8 %, but the exhaust emissions were lower than diesel, except for CO2 and NO. However, PEE10 engine performance was better and exhaust gas emissions were lower for both pollutants than diesel mixed with 10 % bioethanol. The investigation of PEE10 with increasing bioethanol revealed that the use of PEE10 blended with 5 % bioethanol (PEE10E5) can improve engine performance, while the BTE and BSFC were close to that of diesel, and exhaust emissions, especially CO2, NO and BS reduced. Moreover, BTE from PEE10E5 fueling increased by 2 % but BSFC was subtle increased, compared to PEE10. On the other hand, the increasing bioethanol from 10 to 20 % in PEE10 led to the more reduction in engine performance, but the engine pollutants were also continuously decreased. Specifically, the blend of PEE10 and 20 % bioethanol indicates that CO2, NO and BS were reduced by 10, 15 and 33 %, respectively, compared to diesel fuel. HIGHLIGHTS A mixture of diesel and 10 % palm oil ethyl ester (PEE10) has less exhaust emissions than diesel blended with 10 % palm oil methyl ester (PME10) PEE10 blended with 5 % bioethanol can improve engine performance, while the brake thermal efficiency and brake specific fuel consumption are close to that of diesel and PME10 The increasing bioethanol from 10 to 20 % in PEE10 leads to the more reduction in engine performance, but the engine pollutants, especially carbon dioxide, nitric oxide and black smoke, are also continuously decreased GRAPHICAL ABSTRACT

The objective of this study is to analyse the effect of pentanol-diesel fuel blends on thermo-physical properties, combustion characteristics, engine performance, and emissions of a diesel engine. The experimental tests were performed using YANMAR TF120M single-cylinder, direct-injection diesel engine. The fuel tests were evaluated using 5 %, 10 %, and 20 % pentanol added onto diesel fuel (DF), denoted as PE5, PE10 and PE20, respectively, to produce pentanol-diesel fuel blends at a constant engine speed of 1800 rpm under various engine loads. Based on the results, thermo-physical properties show that the calorific value, density, and kinematic viscosity were reduced by 8.12 %, 1.2 %, and 12 % for PE20. In addition, at 25 % engine load, the in-cylinder pressure of PE5, PE10, and PE20, were reduced by 1.76 %, 3.43 %, and 6.54 %, respectively, compared to DF. Furthermore, maximum heat release rate of PE5, PE10, and PE20 were reduced by 6.74 %, 7.50 %, and 18.54 %, respectively, compared to DF at 25 % engine load. Moreover, at 25 % engine load, the brake specific fuel consumption of PE5 showed better performance result due to fuel consumptions usage being reduced by 20.83 %. Conversely, brake thermal efficiency increased by 11.2 %, at 25 % engine load for PE5. CO and CO2 emissions decreased by 9.99 % and 3.2 %, respectively, at 100 % engine load of PE20.

The increasing consumption and demand for fossil fuels have more significance than before alarm above its lessening rate and for that reason, stimulated the actions are needed to challenge the issue with an efficient and less polluting alternative fuel for diesel. This study evaluated the performance of an 8.2 kW small diesel engine using three fuels, namely diesel, waste cooking oil biodiesel and wild tree biodiesel, such as granadilla oil biodiesel (GBD) and tung oil biodiesel (TBD). The experimental engine was tested at 1,500 rpm of constant engine speed and 20–80% of engine load. The specific fuel consumption, brake specific energy consumption, brake mean sufficient pressure, brake thermal efficiency, exhaust emission and temperature were evaluated. It was found that the small diesel engine worked well using wild trees biodiesel. The brake means effective pressures were lower by 5–8% and thermal brake efficiency was decreased in the range of 9–15%, compared with diesel fuel. The exhaust emission was lower than Thailand’s industrial standard and slightly higher than waste cooking oil biodiesel and diesel fuel operation. The operation of biodiesel from wild trees is suitable for farmers and is considered feasible for local communities in the future.

In the present study, the effects of adding of bioethanol as a fuel additive to a coconut biodiesel-diesel fuel blend on engine performance, exhaust emissions, and combustion characteristics were studied in a medium-duty, high-pressure common-rail turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine under different torque conditions. The test fuels used were fossil diesel fuels, B20 (20% biodiesel blend), B20E5 (20% biodiesel + 5% bioethanol blend), and B20E10 (20% biodiesel + 10% bioethanol blend). The experimental results demonstrated that there was an improvement in the brake specific energy consumption (BSEC) and brake thermal efficiency (BTE) of the blends at the expense of brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) for each bioethanol blend. An increment in nitrogen oxide (NOx) across the entire load range, except at low load conditions, was found with a higher percentage of the bioethanol blend. Also, it was found that simultaneous smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) emission reduction from the baseline levels of petroleum diesel fuel is attainable by utilizing all types of fuel blends. In terms of combustion characteristics, the utilization of bioethanol blended fuels presented a rise in the peak in-cylinder pressure and peak heat release rate (HRR) at a low engine load, especially for the B20E10 blend. Furthermore, the B20E10 showed shorter combustion duration, which reduced by an average of 1.375 °CA compared to the corresponding baseline diesel. This study therefore showed that the B20E10 blend exhibited great improvements in the diesel engine, thus demonstrating that bioethanol is a feasible fuel additive for coconut biodiesel-diesel blends.
