The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of a community-based food education program on nutrition-related knowledge in middle-aged and older patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Participants (n = 36; 65.9 ± 6.0 years old) were recruited in primary health care to a 9-month community-based lifestyle intervention program for patients with T2D and randomly assigned to an exercise program (control group; n = 16) or an exercise program plus a food education program (experimental group; n = 20). Nutrition-related knowledge was assessed through a modified version of the General Nutrition Knowledge Questionnaire. The increase in total nutrition-related knowledge score and sources of nutrients area score was significantly higher in the experimental group compared to the control group. No significant changes in nutrition-related knowledge were found between groups in dietary recommendations and diet-disease relationship areas, although improvements were observed. This community-based food education program, with the use of easy to implement strategies (short-duration lectures and dual-task problem solving activities during exercise), had a positive and encouraging impact on nutrition-related knowledge in middle-aged and older patients with T2D.

AbstractThis study aimed to investigate the impact of a 16-week dance-based aerobic exercise program on lymphocyte function in healthy and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) women. We enrolled 23 women: 11 with T2DM and 12 non-diabetic controls. Initially, we performed anthropometry and body composition measurements, afterwards, plasma levels of C-reactive protein, lipids, and glucose were determined. We used flow cytometry to measure the CD25 and CD28 expression in circulating lymphocytes, T-regulatory (Treg) cell percentage, lymphocyte proliferation, and cytokines released by cultured lymphocytes. The T2DM group had a lower proportion of CD28+ cells and a higher percentage of Treg lymphocytes and proliferative capacity at the baseline compared with the control group. After 16 weeks of the program, differences in lymphocytes between the T2DM and the control groups disappeared. The dance program promoted IL-10 increase in both groups. We found decreased IL-4, IL-2, and IL-6 secretion in lymphocytes from the control group and increased IL-17 secretion and IL-10/IL-17 ratio in the T2DM group after the program. The program promoted marked changes in lymphocytes in diabetic women, leading to a balance between the different profiles.

In this paper, the authors presented a study aimed at determining the impact of coordination and speed training programs on morphological characteristics of classroom pupils. The sample of respondents included primary school pupils from Nis, aged 9 and 10 (± 6 months). The sample of 64 respondents was divided into two groups, an experimental and control group, 32 pupils in each group. The respondents of the experimental group were involved in the training process of exercising coordination and speed in additional PE classes, while the control group was involved only in regular PE classes. The results of the multivariate analysis of variance and the univariate analysis of variance showed that there are statistically significant differences in the morphological characteristics of the experimental group of respondents in the final measurement compared to the control group respondents  in the skin abdomen (ANTRB), the foreskin of the upper arm  (ANNAD), and the skin of the lower leg (ANPTK).

Purpose: To determine the impact that a high-fiber, low-fat diet, derived from mostly plant-based sources, when coupled with support has upon self-management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Latinos from medically underserved areas (MUAs). Design: Experimental randomized controlled community pilot study. Setting: Three community clinics in MUAs located within San Bernardino County, California. Participants: Thirty-two randomly assigned Latinos with A1C greater than 6.4: 15 control and 17 experimental. Intervention: Participants completed a 5-week education program. Researchers provided follow-up support for 17 randomly assigned experimental group participants through focus groups held at participating clinics—1, 3, and 6 months posteducation. Measures: Changes in fat and fiber consumption were measured using a modified Dietary Screener for Mexican Americans. Self-management was measured through the Self-Efficacy for Exercise Scale and Diabetes Quality of Life Measure. Analysis: Baseline characteristics for both groups were analyzed using independent t tests and χ2 tests. A 2-way repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to analyze biometric data between baseline and 6 months for both groups. Results: Mean A1C levels decreased from baseline to 6 months for both groups: control, μ1 = 9.57, μ2 = 9.49; experimental, μ1 = 8.53, μ2 = 7.31. Conclusion: The experimental group demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in mean A1C levels ( P = .002) when compared to the control group.

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of a community-based exercise program on bone mineral density and body composition in postmenopausal women with pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Twenty postmenopausal women (aged 61.3 ± 6.0 years) with pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes were randomly assigned to a community-based exercise program group (n=10) or a control group (n=10). The community-based exercise program was multicomponent, three days per week for 32 weeks, and included walking, resistance and aquatic exercises. Body composition and bone mineral density were measured pre and post-training by dual X-ray absorptiometry. In the exercise group significant increases were found in the ward’s triangle bone mineral density (+7.8%, p=0.043), and in fat-free mass (+2.4%, p=0.018). The findings suggest that regular multicomponent training is effective in preventing osteoporosis and sarcopenia among postmenopausal women with pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes.

Introduction. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus was a chronic disease have complicated. Amount of patient Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) was increased. Knowledge and self-efficacy is mainly important for self-care behavior. The purpose of this study was aimed to examine knowledge, and self-efficacy among patients with Type 2 DM in Bandung, Indonesia. Methods. The research was a quasi-experimental with pre and posttest control group. Sixty two type 2 DM were recruited from 8 working area Primary Health Centers in Bandung who have diagnosed DM, using purposive sampling technique. Knowledge questionnaire from Michigan Diabetes Research and Training Center’s Brief Diabetes Knowledge Test, Self-efficacy were measured by the developed Stanford Patients Education Research Center. Both of questionnaires comprised five dimensions: nutrition, sport and activity, drugs and glucose monitoring. Patients of in intervention group received 2 weeks Diabetes Mellitus education program be given healthcare workers. Techniques used in this program consisted of community-based education, goal setting, follow-up and face-to-face interview. Data were analyzed by independent t-test. Results. There are significantly different of knowledge and self-efficacy after community-based education program in intervention (M = 9.26, SD = 2.8 ; M = 53.26, SD = 10.50) and control group (M = 7.39, SD = 2.4; M = 36.74, SD = 4.49).  This study revealed that community-based education program significantly improved self-efficacy (p=0.000) but not improved for knowledge (p=0.180). Conclusion. These findings indicated that Knowledge and Self-efficacy of type 2 Diabetes Mellitus patients in Bandung required improvement. Therefore, further study regarding the effective in improving knowledge and self-efficacy type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is extremely needed.

Introduction: The benefits of Diabetic Camp as known can be applied to promote knowledge and self management among diabetes people. Nevertheless, empirical data of its effect on diabetes self-efficacy are still limited, especially on middle aged and elderly people with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Objectives: The purpose of this intervention study was to investigate the change of self-efficacy among middle-aged and elderly people living with type 2 DM after attending camp. Methods: A quasi-experimental study was used. Eighty-four participants were recruited form two public health center in Bukittnggi City West Sumatra Indonesia were randomly assigned into either the experimental group (n=42) or control group (n=42) by matching technique based on gender , age, and duration of illness. The experimental group participated in diabetic camp for two days continuing with weekly follow up for over 1 month while those in the control group participated in routine activities. Outcome was measured by using Self-efficacy Questionnaire for Diabetes at the first day before receiving the intervention as pretest data, and on the four weeks after the intervention was completed as the posttest data. The reliability of the Self-efficacy Questionnaire for Diabetes with Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.81. Descriptive and inferential statistics were performed to analyze the data. Results: Mean of self-efficacy score in the experimental group after receiving the intervention was significantly higher than those in the control group (t =4.27; p<0.05). The mean of self-efficacy score after receiving the intervention in the experimental group was increased significantly from before receiving the intervention (t = 8.15; p<0.05). Conclusions: The results showed that Diabetic camp was effective in promoting self-efficacy of middle-aged and elderly people with type 2 DM. Thus, this diabetes care program can be recommended for practice

Background/Aim. Osteoporosis is a systemic disease of the skeleton characterized by a decrease in bone mass and changes in the bone structure. An increased tendency of the bone tissue for fractures occurs as a consequence of these changes. The initial phase of physiological aging of the bones that gradually leads to osteoporosis is osteopenia. This paper tracks the effects of a specific kind of physical exercise program in women with osteopenia. The aim was to quantify the impact of this program on: the concentration of bone metabolism blood markers, muscle strength, aerobic capacity, and physical dimensions. Methods. The sample consisted of 26 women in postmenopause (age 46?58) divided into two groups ? experimental group (n = 15) and control group (n = 11). A combined program of exercise consisting of aerobic activities and strength training was applied in the experimental group, while the control group did not join in the exercise program. The program lasted for 7 weeks, three times a week with a break day between the trainings. The intensity of the aerobic training was in the span of 60% to 70% of heart rate reserve (HRR), and the intensity of the strength training was in the span of 60% to 85% of one repetitive maximum (1RM). Osteopenia was diagnosed prior to the experiment by applying a dual energy X-ray absorptiometry of the lumbar spine and the hip. The following was measured before and after the experiment: the level of biochemical markers in the serum [Beta-aspartic acid ?-cross laps (CTx), total procollagen type 1 N-terminal peptide (tP1NP) and bone isoenzyme of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), 1RM of leg extensors, maximum oxygen consumption (VO2 max), bodily height and mass, and a calculated Body Mass Index (BMI). Results. Significant changes were determined only in the experimental group. During the experimental period, there was a significant increase of muscle strength and VO2 max, with a decrease of Beta-CTx concentration. No statistically significant changes were recorded in the control group. Conclusion. A 7- week period of systematic exercise showed to be sufficient to increase muscle strength and VO2 max, partially also to decrease bone resorption, but insufficient to alter bone volume, bodily mass, and BMI.
