To contain the COVID-19 pandemic, governments all over the world implemented strong lockdown measures to a large part of the population, including the closing of educational centres. Teachers were urged to transform their teaching methodology, moving from a face-to-face model to an emergency remote education (ERE) model, characterised by the use of technologies to continue with lectures and maintain the physical distance with the students. The aim of the present study was to analyse the existence of socio-digital inequalities and the educational challenges posed by the development of an ERE model, hence, contributing to the literature by proposing a systematic and holistic approach on this phenomenon. Based on the characteristics of the research problem and the objectives set, a qualitative methodology was applied. On the one hand, a semi-structured interview was conducted with 136 active teachers as the main data gathering technique. On the other hand, grounded theory was key in interpreting the results, with the aim of generating the theory in a systematic and holistic manner. It can be asserted that ERE was very useful during the lockdown of schools, and its potential to transform education was demonstrated. However, it was also shown that the development of an ERE model can cause socio-digital inequalities among students, due to the lack of access to digital devices and Internet connection, mainly due to factors, such as the socio-educational level of the family and the rural or urban context of the centre.

The use of technology in healthcare became a prevailing necessity during the COVID-19 pandemic. The sanitary services oriented in mental health broadened their way of interaction due to the increase in the need for these services. Healthcare professionals had to develop different learning skills and adapt their abilities to the virtual clinical practice through a digital interface, where communication represented the biggest challenge. The objective of the study was to identify the different adjustments, especially in the communication skills, made by those who provide psychological services by the Virtual Clinic in Psychology and others and clinical psychologists. The authors considered adequate qualitative methodology for the study with an exploratory, descriptive design. The data gathering tool was a semi-structured interview and the word analysis method. The participants are professors that provide psychological care in the Virtual Clinic in Psychology of a nonprofit institution of higher education in Mexico and professionals providing mental health attention.

PurposeThis paper aims to discuss the role of open-book accounting (OBA) and trust on buyer–supplier relationship satisfaction. The objective of this paper is to analyze how OBA and trust influence satisfaction on the relationship between suppliers and buyers in the Brazilian automotive sector’s supply chain.Design/methodology/approachThe research has been developed based on a qualitative strategy, characterized as explanatory. Data gathering has been conducted through document analysis and semi-structured interview, and content analysis has been used for discourse analysis.FindingsResults show that OBA is unilateral, imposed by the auto manufacturer, representing a selective information process, as suppliers try to protect their information value as far as possible. Trust is partial and cooperation is not spontaneous, both driven by the search for benefits. OBA may yield a positive or a negative outcome with regard to the social and the economic overall satisfaction of suppliers, depending on how the information is used by auto manufacturer.Originality/valueThe main contribution of this article is to provide an understanding of the difficulties of applying the OBA in companies and of the factors that may influence its operation and performance, impacting on satisfaction and continuity of relationships. The paper also contributes with the proposal of a clearer and more objective definition of OBA. Being the intention that new research in this area can be developed from a delimited, clear and objective definition of OBA, allowing better understanding on the subject and comparison among research studies.

The objective of the study is to support students in the rational, logical, and analytical process that they perform when faced with a scientific problem. This study uses qualitative methodology as its purpose is to present the strategy as learning stemming from the process of analysis, which is rooted on how to detect scientifically the research problem in the field of social sciences. A statistical analysis is made on the use and application of the diagram in a sample of 27 undergraduate students who have used the situational map in the elaboration of their theses. The trend shows that 92.6% of respondents achieved concluding their research processes of thesis work, at the planned time, and their results were consistent with their hypothesis and/or purposes. The creation of this strategy is a support for students, who have not developed their ability to think critically and establish relationships between concepts and theories in the execution of scientific research.

Agricultural communities often confront issues such as lack of support from various political actors. The local government units LGUs are responsible for initiating measures for improving community capitals towards fostering growth and development to mango farming communities. This descriptive qualitative study provides an understanding of the initiatives of the LGU in enhancing the community capitals in the Guimaras, Philippines mango farming community. The community capitals framework (CCF) served as a lens and guide. Semi-structured interview guides and participant observation are instrumental in data gathering from five key informants. Findings revealed that LGU provided various programs and initiatives to help enhance the community capitals of the mango sector; thus, LGU as a political actor and development enabler has significant roles in fostering community development. Recommendations in this study are essential to the LGU further to enhance the community capitals of the mango farming sector. In gist, there is a need to focus more on building social networks within the community, establish means for transporting the mango produce, and strengthen community education on agriculture among the youth for them to involve in the mango industry’s development.

El presente trabajo persigue describir las necesidades educativas de los estudiantes con discapacidad en una unidad educativa de Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas (Ecuador), y contrastar esta realidad definida a partir de su experiencia, con la exigida por el legislador ecuatoriano para la construcción de una educación constitucionalmente definida como del Sumak Kawsay. Se sigue una metodología cualitativa, y se aplica como técnica de recolección de datos la entrevista estructurada a seis estudiantes con distintas discapacidades según el Consejo Nacional de Discapacidad del Ecuador. Entre las conclusiones más relevantes se aprecia una aún incipiente cultura educativa inclusiva, preocupada principalmente por la estructura física más que en la integración de los distintos actores de la comunidad educativa; en especial, se aprecia una necesidad de fortalecer las funciones de los Departamentos de Consejería Estudiantil, así como la formación y apoyo del docente en cuanto al refuerzo de la relación de confianza con los estudiantes, identificación de sus necesidades particulares, y una apreciación del valor de aprendizaje de este colectivo como aderezo de una relación intercultural orientada a la inclusión educativa y al abandono del asistencialismo.ABSTRACTThe present study aims to describe the educational needs of students with disabilities in an educational unit in Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas (Ecuador), and to contrast this reality defined from his experience with that demanded by the Ecuadorian legislator for the construction of an education constitutionally defined as Sumak Kawsay. A qualitative methodology is followed, and the structured interview is applied as a data collection technique to six students with different disabilities according to the National Disability Council of Ecuador. Among the most relevant conclusions, there is a still an incipient inclusive educational culture, mainly concerned with the physical structure rather than the integration of the different actors of the educational community. In particular, there is a need to strengthen the functions of the Student Counselling Departments, as well as teacher training and support in reinforcing the relationship of trust with students, identification of their particular needs, and an appreciation of the learning value of this group as an intercultural relationship oriented towards educational inclusion and abandonment of welfarism.

Nursing students learn English language as specific purposes (ESP). They should be able to learn do communication in English to be a professional nurse. However, learning English was not an easy game to do. There will be some difficulties and adjustment along the learning process. Thus, the research is aimed at. A descriptive qualitative methodology as the foundation to investigate the obstacles in the learning process among Indonesian EFL nursing students and to examine the nursing students’ expectation in English learning process. Open-ended questionnaire and semi-structured interview would be the instruments to gain support some information. About 24 respondents and 3 of representatives of 7th semester nursing students would be the respondents. The result showed that besides grammar, structure, and tenses application, four skills implementation, lecturer’s effects, and institution’s regulations (curriculum management distribution, time schedule management, connection problem between staffs authority and lecturer) would be the major obstacles. Meanwhile, better communication among nursing institute stakeholders about schedule, time management, curriculum and modifying classroom activities could be the better expectation emerged to reduce the EFL nursing students’ obstacles. This research concluded that adjusting the regulation for the English subject curriculum and altering nursing students to encourage and motivate themselves to learn about English could change the outcome and situation to build pedagogical implication and to plan more comprehensive English learning activities.

PurposeThis study aims to investigate the second-generation successors’ motives to join family businesses and their ability to generate innovation within them.Design/methodology/approachA qualitative methodology is used in this study. Data were collected through structured interview with the second-generation representatives, where the data obtained helped us to come to the results and answer the research questions of the study. A total of 15 interviews were conducted.FindingsThe findings of this study show that the second generation is motivated to continue the family business, cases show that successors since childhood have been oriented towards building an entrepreneurial mindset and also after entering the family business have generated innovation.Originality/valueThe study will bring theoretical implications to the family business literature, providing scientific evidence for the second generation of family businesses, from an emerging country such as Kosovo. As Kosovo is an emerging country, the study will contribute to the literature, suggesting other studies by emerging countries in this way to see the similarities and differences.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are often used for environmental monitoring applications in which nodes periodically measure environmental conditions and immediately send the measurements back to the sink for processing. Since WSN nodes are typically battery powered, network lifetime is a major concern. A key research problem is how to determine the data gathering schedule that will maximize network lifetime while meeting the user's application-specific accuracy requirements. In this work, a novel algorithm for determining efficient sampling schedules for data gathering WSNs is proposed. The algorithm differs from previous work in that it dynamically adapts the sampling schedule based on the observed internode data correlation as well as the temporal correlation. The performance of the algorithm has been assessed using real-world datasets. For two-tier networks, the proposed algorithm outperforms a highly cited previously published algorithm by up to 512% in terms of lifetime and by up to 30% in terms of prediction accuracy. For multihop networks, the proposed algorithm improves on the previously published algorithm by up to 553% and 38% in terms of lifetime and accuracy, respectively.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to conceptualize, develop and validate a scale reflecting performance dimensions of women entrepreneurs. The study intends to address the important aspects of women entrepreneur such as identifying factors influencing performance of women entrepreneur in emerging economies including India, and to develop a reliable and valid scale for measuring performance from women entrepreneurs’ perspective, which will help to explain the phenomena of entrepreneurship among women by using a holistic approach.Design/methodology/approachIn-depth literature reviews were conducted to identify manifest item measuring the latent scale dimensions. Semi-structured interview with women entrepreneurs also contributed toward item generation. A total of 1,032 valid and usable questionnaires were used for the final statistical data analysis. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) also conducted to confirm factors-item composition considered for the study.FindingsA final scale comprising six dimensions of entrepreneurial performance has been developed. These dimensions are business environment, motivation (pull/push), training and skill development, networking and market information, socio–cultural and financial. Dimensions are reflecting perception of women entrepreneurs on performance. Psychometrically properties of the proposed scale were tested and the model fitness was established through CFA.Research limitations/implicationsThe proposed scale will be beneficial for both existing and nascent entrepreneurs toward gaining awareness regarding what accounts for their performance enhancement in the respective ventures undertaken. At the same time, the finding carries implications for regulatory bodies and policymakers as well, which are engaged in drafting guidelines catering to the development of women entrepreneurship in respective economies.Originality/valueThe authors believe that the proposed scale offers superior ability to explain factors that affect the performance of women entrepreneurs in emerging economies such as India.

Suitability of determining the approach, methods, techniques and strategies that are being applied in teaching and learning session is closely related to curriculum implementer. Academic lecturers not only determine the design and development of elements contained in the subjects but also they act as the assessor and examiner of the learning outcome. The implementation of active learning is one of the elements in 21st Century Learning concept. This research used qualitative methodology with interviews and observation among matriculation students.  The data of semi-structured interview were analysed in verbatim while the observation is being done using checklist form. Generally, the finding of this study shows that active learning activities are suitable to be applied especially in etiquette practical at the dining table, event organization, interview session and public speaking. The learning outcome of these activities was also assessed to develop generic skills from students’ and lecturers’ perspective.
