Following economic growth in the past three decades, rapid urbanization has caused many pronounced issues, such as spatial scarcity and cultural discontinuity, in Chinese historical and cultural cities. In order to better deal with the diversification of underground space resources, data and information, this study introduces a random forest algorithm and proposes a multi-layer information superposition method. According to the characteristics of different information, starting from qualitative and quantitative aspects, we explore the effective performance of the rational development of underground space resources. Taking Yangzhou City, China, as an example, this paper evaluates the suitability and calculates the development volume of urban underground space. The development capacity, potential value, and comprehensive quality of underground space resources are explored in an attempt to demonstrate the practicality and scientificity of the evaluation method for achieving the developmental goals of urban space reconstruction and historic preservation. On this basis, an underground space scale forecast is carried out to provide decision support for relevant planners, managers, and construction personnel that is conducive to the orderly development of urban space, alleviation of increasing human–land conflicts, and coordination of the protection and development of underground space resources in historical and cultural cities, ultimately promoting sustainable development of cities.

With rapid urbanization in the world, new town construction has become prosperous. In particular, new emerging towns in China are unique because of the most significant movement of “building cities”. Over four decades of reform and opening-up, this movement has brought about a special development model known as State-level New Area (SLNA) which, like a new town, is causing a growth spurt in national and regional economic development. By applying the critical theory of production of space, this paper gives an overall analysis. SLNAs generate a new expansion pattern of urban space in the regionalization process dominated by governments. To reveal the spatiotemporal evolution logic of SLNA, the framework identifies the main characteristics contributing to spatial production: both bottom-up and top-down project on construction; a sharp and unordered trend of increment in time scale; an unbalanced regional distribution in the sequential order of “Eastern–Western–Northeastern–Central” among regions; complex spatial overlaying with different development zones and administrative divisions; and large-scale spatial expanding. This paper finds that the ongoing growth of SLNAs is a rapid process of spatial production with more contradictions, which is especially marked by tension between disorder and reorder. We hope to provide theoretical reference and practical guidance for the sustainable urbanization and orderly regional development of SLNAs.

Land subsidence is one of the major urban geological hazards, which seriously restricts the development of many cities in the world. As one of the major cities in China, Xi’an has also been experiencing a large area of land subsidence due to excessive exploitation of groundwater. Since the Heihe Water Transfer Project (HWTP) became fully operational in late 2003, the problem of subsidence has been restrained, but other issues, such as ground rebounds, have appeared, and the effect of the underground space utilization on land subsidence remains unsolved. The spatial-temporal pattern of land subsidence and rebound in Xi’an after HWTP and their possible cause have so far not been well understood. In this study, the evolutionary characteristics of land subsidence and rebound in Xi’an city from 2007–2019 was investigated using Small Baseline Subset Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (SBAS-SAR) technology to process the Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) and Sentinel-1A SAR datasets, and their cause and the correlation with groundwater level changes and the underground space utilization were discussed. We found that the land subsidence rate in the study area slowed from 2007–2019, and the subsidence area shrank and gradually developed into three relatively independent and isolated subsidence areas primarily. Significant local rebound deformation up to 22 mm/y commenced in the groundwater recharge region during 2015–2019. The magnitude of local rebound was dominated by the rise in groundwater level due to HWTP, whereas tectonic faults and ground fissures control the range of subsidence and the uplift area. The influence of building load on surface deformation became increasingly evident and primarily manifested by slowing the subsidence reduction trend. Additionally, land subsidence caused by the disturbances during the subway construction period was stronger than that in the operational stage. Future land subsidence in Xi’an is predicted to be alleviated overall, and the areas of rebound deformation will continue increasing for a limited time. However, uneven settlement range may extend to the Qujiang and Xixian New District due to the rapid urban construction. Our results could provide a scientific basis for land subsidence hazard mitigation, underground space planning, and groundwater management in Xi’an or similar regions where severe ground subsidence was induced by rapid urbanization.

Recently, museum designers engaged in exploring dungeons, following archaeologists and diggers. Such interest in transformation of the underground space into a museum space has not yet been sufficiently analyzed, so the article considers a variety of examples from the modern practice of turning underground spaces into museums. In addition to sociocultural examples related to the special features of the urban space or the preservation of a unique landscape, I would like to draw special attention to the importance of archetypes associated with underground spaces when designing a modern museum exposition.

The development and utilization of underground space is an effective way to solve the shortage of urban space capacity. It is also an inevitable choice for the sustainable development of urban underground space. The development and utilization of underground space in small and medium-sized cities in China started relatively late and lacked practical basis. This paper selects three representative small and medium-sized cities in east China to study the status quo, contents and achievements of underground space development and utilization, makes a comparative analysis, and puts forward the overall characteristics of underground space development and utilization in small and medium-sized cities, hoping to provide reference for the development and utilization of underground space in small and medium-sized cities in the future.

In order to solve the existent problems of incomplete and ambiguous information during the evaluation on the multiple constraints factors of city underground space development and utilization, this paper applies analytic hierarchy process and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method to construct the comprehensive evaluation index system of the multiple constraint factors of city underground space development and utilization, then Yuzhong District, Yubei District, Beibei District in Chongqing respectively as an example, and comprehensively to evaluate the multiple constraint factors of city underground space development and utilization. Example analysis shows that, it has high feasibility and effectiveness that applies the method of fuzzy comprehensive evaluation to the multiple constraint factors of city underground space development and utilization, and it can contribute to solve fuzziness and uncertainty problems of the evaluation process.

According to constraint elements more and more appearing in the comprehensive forms, and at present it only considers that single constraint element of city underground space development and utilization has been unable to reflect the actual situation. On the basis of the main characteristics of city underground space development and utilization, this paper aims to analyze various factors which may cause the consequence and the frequency of appearance, and to construct evaluation index system of city underground space development and utilization which is composed of 5 one-level indexes, 20 two-level indexes of evaluation index system of multiple constraint factors of city underground space development and utilization, and to use the analytic hierarchy process and fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method to analyze and evaluate the influence on city underground space development and utilization. Analysis of the example application shows that, it only considers single constraint element of city underground space development and utilization is not comprehensive, and not science, and it needs to consider the correlation between various constraint elements.

The development of Urban Underground Space (UUS) has become an effective way to solve the problem of urban space. Seismic methods have achieved good results in underground engineering construction, active faults detection, urban geological structure detection and other fields. Active source seismic methods in UUS include reflection methods, refraction methods, surface wave methods and vertical seismic profile (VSP) methods and so on. Ambient noise method is also rising gradually, which becomes an important method of urban underground space detection in the future, because it overcomes the problem that the active source method is interfered by urban noise. We briefly summarize these methods and introduce the application examples of UUS.

This article aims to answer the question that if the law of planification of China, really takes account of the objectives of environmental protection.   The answer is based on, first of all, the reform of system of land ownership (direct link of the development of urbanization). This article cracks the problem by two approaches: the state and collective property right. The first part of the analysis is macro-perspective, i.e., the course of land reform and the land users. In general, the state remains the sole owner of all the land and delegates the local governments to manage the use of land in China. However, the high interest undermines their roles, and degradation of environment in the process of urbanization continues. Based on this observation, we analyzed their administration, i.e., who are the actors and how the powers are shared. The lack of transparency and independence is in its structure, i.e., they have ambitions to have a good protection but the conflict appears frequently.    In the further part, micro-vision was employed. We focused on the regulations of planification, procedures and formalities that is deeply involved. In fact, we find that the volume of law was expanded and a need of consolidation is urgent for the coherence, accessibility and understanding of law. Then it follows the analysis of two typical procedures: the procedure of environmental assessment as well as participation. These procedures are the practical implementation of the consideration of the environment. The fact is that rapid urbanization resulted in a reconfiguration of the urban space, and the appearance of a variety of interests. The degradation of environment, coupled with the importance of urbanization has become a challenge to governance. People realized more and more issues related to housing, welfare and citizenship. This forces the government to change their policies and acts.    From different points of views- historical, political, administrative, legal and social- this research determines how a better environmental protection can play in law of planification. The reforms are envisaged, and there are still problems: the harmonization and consistency of the regulations, the clarity of the law for his efficiency and law security, the improvement of the process. Contrary to what is received, the government has intention to solve this question, as demonstrated by his consistency to innovation and reform in the field. At the present, planification, rather than a method of protection, works for the growth of the economy. Due to the lack of effective regulation, the real consideration of environment is still very limited.
