Previous experimental studies showed that increasing high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) cholesterol shortens cardiac ventricular repolarization and the QT interval corrected for heart rate (QTc). However, little is known about the epidemiological relationship between HDL and QTc. The potential antiarrhythmic effect of HDL cholesterol remains a speculative hypothesis. In this cross-sectional population based study in adults living in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland, we aimed to explore the association between HDL cholesterol and the QTc interval in the general population. A total of 1202 subjects were screened. electrocardiogram (ECG) recordings, measurements of lipid parameters and other laboratory tests were performed. QTc was corrected using Bazett’s (QTcBaz) and Framingham (QTcFram) formulas. HDL was categorized according to percentile distributions: <25th (HDL-1; ≤1.39 mmol/L); 25th–<50th (HDL-2; 1.40–1.69 mmol/L); 50th–<75th (HDL-3; 1.69–1.99 mmol/L); and ≥75th (HDL-4; ≥2.0 mmol/L). After exclusion procedures, data of 1085 subjects were analyzed. Compared with the HDL reference group (HDL-1), HDL-2 and HDL-3 were associated with a reduction of QTcBaz and QTcFram duration in crude (HDL-2, QTcBaz/QTcFram: β-11.306/–10.186, SE 4.625/4.016; p = 0.016/0.012; HDL-3, β-12.347/–12.048, SE 4.875/4.233, p = 0.012/<0.001) and adjusted (HDL-2: β-11.697/–10.908, SE 4.333/4.151, p < 0.001/0.010; HDL-3 β-11.786/–11.002, SE 4.719/4.521, p = 0.014/0.016) linear regression models in women. In adjusted logistic regression models higher HDL, were also associated with lower risk of prolonged QTcBaz/QTcFram (HDL-2: OR 0.16/0.17, CI 0.03–0.83/0.47–0.65; HDL-3: OR 0.10/0.14, CI 0.10–0.64/0.03–0.63) in women. Restricted cubic spline analysis confirmed a non linear association (p < 0.001). The present findings indicate an epidemiological association between HDL cholesterol and QTc duration. To draw firm conclusions, further investigations in other populations and with a prospective cohort design are needed.

Only a few studies primarily examined the associations between starchy vegetables (other than potatoes) and metabolic syndrome (MetS). We aimed to evaluate the association between starchy vegetables consumption and MetS in a population-based sample of Costa Rican adults. We hypothesized that a higher overall intake of starchy vegetables would not be associated with higher MetS prevalence. In this cross-sectional study, log-binomial regression models were used to estimate prevalence ratios (PRs) of MetS across quintiles of total, unhealthy, healthy starchy vegetables, and individual starchy vegetables (potatoes, purple sweet potatoes, etc.), among 1881 Costa Rican adults. Least square means and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) from linear regression models were estimated for each MetS component by categories of starchy vegetable variables. Higher intakes of starchy vegetables were associated with a higher prevalence of MetS in crude models, but no significant trends were observed after adjusting for confounders. A significant inverse association was observed between total starchy and healthy starchy vegetables consumption and fasting blood glucose. In this population, starchy vegetables might be part of a healthy dietary pattern.

ABSTRACT Background Paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) is a high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-associated enzyme with antioxidative properties, which may protect against the development of cardiovascular disease. Alcohol consumption increases HDL cholesterol, but the extent to which alcohol consumption gives rise to higher serum PON-1 activity is uncertain. Objective In a population-based study, we determined the relation of serum PON-1 activity with alcohol consumption when taking account of HDL cholesterol and apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I), its major apolipoprotein. Design A cross-sectional study was performed in 8224 participants of the Prevention of Renal and Vascular End-Stage Disease (PREVEND) cohort. Alcohol consumption was categorized as 1) no/rarely (25.3%); 2) 0.1–10 g/d (49.3%); 3) 10–30 g/d (20.1%); and 4) >30 g/d (5.2%) with 1 drink equivalent to 10 g alcohol. Serum PON-1 activity was measured as its arylesterase activity (phenyl acetate as substrate). Results Median serum PON-1 activity was 50.8, 53.1, 54.4, and 55.7 U/L in the 4 categories of alcohol consumption, respectively (P < 0.001). Its increase paralleled the increments in HDL cholesterol and apoA-I. Notably, there was no further increase in PON-1 activity, HDL cholesterol, and apoA-I when alcohol consumption was increased from 10–30 g/d to >30 g/d. Multivariable linear regression analysis demonstrated that PON-1 activity was related to alcohol consumption independently from clinical covariates, high sensitivity C-reactive protein, and lipid concentrations, including HDL cholesterol (P < 0.001 for each category of alcohol consumption with no alcohol consumption as the reference category). Notably, as inferred from standardized β-coefficients, there was no difference in PON-1 activity between 10–30 g alcohol/d and >30 g alcohol/d. Conclusions Alcohol consumption is associated with an increase in serum PON-1 activity, but its effect seems to reach a plateau with alcohol consumption of 10–30 g/d.

Aim. To study the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) and its components in a 25—45-year-old Novosibirsk population. Subjects and methods. The Novosibirsk Research Institute of Internal and Preventive Medicine conducted a cross-sectional population-based survey in one of the typical districts of Novosibirsk in 2013—2015. The survey covered 346 men and 408 women. The criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program Expert Panel on Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Cholesterol in Adults (NCEP-ATP III, 2001), the International Diabetes Federation (IDF, 2005), the Joint Interim Statement (JIS, 2009), and the All-Russian Research Society of Cardiologists (ARRSC, 2009) were used to detect MS. According to the ARRSC criteria, MS was recorded if a waist circumference (WC) was >80 cm for women and >94 cm for men in conjunction with 2 of the following criteria: a blood pressure ≥130/85 mm Hg, triglycerides (TG) ≥1.7 mmol/l, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol

ObjectiveResistin increases insulin resistance (IR) in mice. However, the role of resistin in human disease remains controversial. We aimed to assess plasma resistin levels and their associations with inflammatory and fibrinolytic markers, IR and metabolic syndrome (MetS) among Chinese.Design and methodsPlasma resistin was measured in a population-based cross-sectional survey of 3193 Chinese aged from 50 to 70 years in Beijing and Shanghai.ResultsThe median resistin concentration was 8.60 ng/ml (interquartile range, 5.78–14.00) among all participants, and it was higher in women than in men (P=0.008). Resistin was correlated weakly with body mass index, waist circumference, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (negatively), homeostatic model assessment of IR and tumor necrosis factor-α receptor 2 (TNFR2; r=0.04, 0.07, –0.09 and 0.06 respectively, all P<0.05), and more highly with C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin (IL)6 and plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI)1 (r=0.12, 0.12 and 0.21 respectively, all P<0.001), but only HDL cholesterol, CRP, IL6, TNFR2, and PAI1 remained significantly associated with resistin in multiple regression analysis (all P<0.05). Furthermore, elevated resistin levels were associated with the higher prevalence of IR and MetS. However, the significant relationships disappeared after adjustment for inflammatory and fibrinolytic markers especially PAI1.ConclusionsThis study suggests that resistin is more strongly associated with inflammatory and fibrinolytic markers than with obesity or IR status. The associations of resistin with IR and MetS could largely be explained by inflammatory and fibrinolytic markers especially PAI1 levels.

Elevated levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) have been associated with a decreased risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). An active lifestyle is necessary to improve HDL-C, including (but not limited to) physical exercise. Research on the association between badminton, an intermittent exercise, and HDL-C is limited. We investigated the impact of aerobic exercise and badminton on HDL-C levels in Taiwanese adults. The sociodemographic data of 7543 participants, comprising 3472 men and 4071 women aged between 30 and 70 years, were retrieved from the Taiwan Biobank. The participants were grouped into three exercise categories—no exercise, aerobic exercise, and badminton exercise. The HDL-C levels were compared using an analysis of variance (ANOVA). Multivariate linear regression models were used to determine the associations between HDL and exercise. Comparing the other two groups to the no-exercise group, the individuals who were engaged in aerobic and badminton exercise were significantly associated with higher HDL-C levels (β = 1.4077; p < 0.0001 and β = 5.6052; p = 0.0079, respectively). Aerobic exercise and badminton were also associated with higher HDL-C levels among carriers of the lipoprotein lipase (LPL) rs328 genotypes. Aerobic exercise and regular badminton were associated with higher levels of HDL-C, with the badminton group being more significant.

Objective: To investigate whether serum bisphenol A (BPA) concentration is related to the occurrence of dyslipidemia. Methods: A total of 574 adults were enrolled at baseline and followed up for 5 years. Concentrations of serum BPA, triglycerides (TGs), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol were measured. Dyslipidemia was defined as the existence of one or more of the following conditions: high-LDL-cholesterolemia (LDL ≥140 mg/dL), hypertriglyceridemia (TGs ≥150 mg/dL), or low-HDL-cholesterolemia (HDL <40 mg/dL). Participants were stratified into tertiles according to low, median, and high baseline serum BPA levels. Multivariable linear and logistic regression models were used. Data from baseline and follow-up were used for cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses, respectively. Results: In the cross-sectional analysis, compared to subjects in the low BPA tertile, those in the high BPA tertile showed a higher level of LDL cholesterol (108.1 ± 24.4 mg/dL versus 119.5 ± 26.9 mg/dL; P<.05) and a lower level of HDL cholesterol (46.2 ± 11.7 mg/dL versus 39.5 ± 7.5 mg/dL; P<.05). In multivariable linear regression models, Z-transformed BPA was positively associated with LDL cholesterol (β= 0.13, P = .002) and negatively associated with HDL cholesterol (β= −0.28; P<.001). After cross-sectionally adjusting for confounders, subjects in higher BPA exposure was associated with a higher prevalence of low-HDL-cholesterolemia. Longitudinally, in subjects without low-HDL-cholesterolemia at baseline, each SD increment in baseline BPA was associated with a higher incidence of low-HDL-cholesterolemia after adjustment for confounders (odds ratio [95% confidence interval; CI] 2.76, 95% CI 1.21, 6.29). Conclusion: Cross-sectionally, higher BPA exposure is associated with a higher prevalence of low-HDL-cholesterolemia. Longitudinally, baseline BPA is an independent predictor of the 5-year incidence of low-HDL-cholesterolemia. Abstract Background: Obesity is associated with substantial metabolic changes and subclinical inflammation. We explored associations between body mass index (BMI) and cardiometabolic biomarkers and their clustering in overweight and obese schoolchildren. Methods: In this population-based, cross-sectional study among 450 children 10 years old, we measured adiponectin, leptin, inflammatory markers, apolipoprotein (apo) AI and B, and lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2). Except for adiponectin and apoAI (10th percentile) the 90th percentile was used as cutoff point. Body weight was categorized in age- and sex-specific BMI percentiles and overweight and obesity according to International Obesity Task Force definitions. Results: In linear regression models, all cardiometabolic markers except apoB were statistically significantly associated with overweight. In logistic regression models, compared with the reference category (25th–75th percentile of BMI), overweight was associated with increased concentrations of leptin [odds ratio (OR) 59.80; 95% CI 16.68–214.39], C-reactive protein (6.30; 2.95–13.45), fibrinogen (2.82; 1.33–6.01), and low apoAI (2.62; 1.19–5.75). Overweight was positively associated with interleukin-6, Lp-PLA2, and apoB concentrations and inversely with adiponectin concentrations. Most importantly, in obese children 35% showed one, 20% two, 10% three, and 15% four or more abnormal cardiometabolic biomarkers. The number of abnormal cardiometabolic markers increased in overweight (ptrend &lt;0.001) and obese (ptrend &lt;0.001) children. Conclusions: Overweight and obesity in children are associated with complex metabolic changes and a low-grade inflammatory response, and thus might not only accelerate cardiovascular disease later on, but may also be associated with the initiation of atherosclerosis in early life.

While growing evidence exists on the independent associations between anthocyanins and physical activity on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk determinants, the possible interaction between these exposures has not yet been studied. We aimed to study the potential synergism between anthocyanin intake and physical activity on lipid profile measures. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 249 US career firefighters participating in the Feeding America’s Bravest trial. Anthocyanin intake was calculated using a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and physical activity level by a validated questionnaire. Multivariable linear regression models determined the extent to which anthocyanin intake and physical activity predicted lipid parameters. Generalized linear models were used for joint effect and interaction analyses on the multiplicative and additive scales. Both anthocyanins and physical activity were independently inversely associated with total cholesterol:high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. Only physical activity was inversely associated with triglycerides, low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol:HDL, and triglycerides (TG):HDL. Although the combined exposure of low anthocyanin intake and low physical activity was associated with lower (RR = 2.83; 95% CI: 1.42 to 5.67) HDL cholesterol <40 mg/dL, neither multiplicative (p = 0.72) nor additive interactions were detected (relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI): 0.02; 95% CI: −1.63 to 1.66; p = 0.98). Our findings provide insight on the potential synergism between anthocyanin intake and physical activity on the lipid profile.

Abstract Background The circulating concentrations of triglycerides, high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol, and low density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol have a substantial genetic component. Although previous genome-wide association studies identified various genes and loci related to plasma lipid levels, those studies were conducted in a cross-sectional manner. Purpose The purpose of the study was to identify genetic variants that confer susceptibility to hypertriglyceridemia, hypo-HDL-cholesterolemia, and hyper-LDL-cholesterolemia in Japanese. We have now performed longitudinal exome-wide association studies (EWASs) to identify novel loci for dyslipidemia by examining temporal changes in serum lipid profiles. Methods Longitudinal EWASs (mean follow-up period, 5 years) for hypertriglyceridemia (2056 case, 3966 controls), hypo-HDL-cholesterolemia (698 cases, 5324 controls), and hyper-LDL-cholesterolemia (2769 cases, 3251 controls) were performed with Illumina Human Exome arrays. The relation of genotypes of 24,691 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that passed quality control to dyslipidemia-related traits was examined with the generalized estimating equation (GEE). To compensate for multiple comparisons of genotypes with each of the three conditions, we applied Bonferroni's correction for statistical significance of association. Replication studies with cross-sectional data were performed for hypertriglyceridemia (2685 cases, 4703 controls), hypo-HDL-cholesterolemia (1947 cases, 6146 controls), and hyper-LDL-cholesterolemia (1719 cases, 5833 controls). Results Longitudinal EWASs revealed that 30 SNPs were significantly (P&lt;2.03 × 10–6 by GEE) associated with hypertriglyceridemia, 46 SNPs with hypo-HDL-cholesterolemia, and 25 SNPs with hyper-LDL-cholesterolemia. After examination of the relation of identified SNPs to serum lipid profiles, linkage disequilibrium, and results of the previous genome-wide association studies, we newly identified rs74416240 of TCHP, rs925368 of GIT2, rs7969300 of ATXN2, and rs12231744 of NAA25 as a susceptibility loci for hypo-HDL-cholesterolemia; and rs34902660 of SLC17A3 and rs1042127 of CDSN for hyper-LDL-cholesterolemia. These SNPs were not in linkage disequilibrium with those previously reported to be associated with dyslipidemia, indicating independent effects of the SNPs identified in the present study on serum concentrations of HDL-cholesterol or LDL-cholesterol in Japanese. According to allele frequency data from the 1000 Genomes project database, five of the six identified SNPs were monomorphic or rare variants in European populations. In the replication study, all six SNPs were associated with dyslipidemia-related phenotypes. Conclusion We have thus identified six novel loci that confer susceptibility to hypo-HDL-cholesterolemia or hyper-LDL-cholesterolemia. Determination of genotypes for these SNPs at these loci may prove informative for assessment of the genetic risk for dyslipidemia in Japanese. Funding Acknowledgement Type of funding source: None
