A series of single crystals of Li(Mn1-x,Nix)PO4 (x = 0.00, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, 0.05, 0.06, 0.08, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, and 0.50) have been grown to large sizes up to 5 mm in diameter and 120 mm in length using the floating zone method for the first time. The comprehensive characterizations of the as-grown crystals were performed before further physical property measurements. The composition of the grown crystals was determined by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The crystal structures were characterized by the X-ray powder diffraction method with a GSAS fitting for structural refinement, which reveals a high phase purity of the as-obtained crystals. The polarized microscopic images and Laue patterns prove the excellent quality of the single crystals. Oriented cuboids with sizes of 2.7 × 3.8 × 2.1 mm3 along the a, b, and c crystalline directions were cut and polished for further anisotropic magnetic and transparent measurements. We also first proposed a new potential application in the non-linear optical (NLO) and laser generation application for LiMPO4 (M = transition metal) materials. The optical and laser properties, such as the absorption spectra and the second harmonic generation (SHG), have been investigated and have furthermore confirmed the good quality of the as-grown single crystals.

The columbite structure [Formula: see text] single crystals have been successfully grown by using the optical floating zone method. The as-grown crystals are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy (RS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). All these analyses show that the doping Co ions do not disturb the structure of columbite [Formula: see text] and some [Formula: see text] ions are substituted by transition metal [Formula: see text] ions without any other impurities. The magnetic properties of as-grown [Formula: see text] crystals have been investigated using Physical Property Measurement System (PPMS). The effective magnetic moment of [Formula: see text] crystals is [Formula: see text], indicating that [Formula: see text] ions present in [Formula: see text] single crystals are in mixed HS and LS states. The ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic characters of as-grown crystals are also discussed.

The remarkable enhancement of the crystalline perfection of benzophenone (BP) crystals induced by liquid crystal (LC) doping has been investigated, and has in turn led to better optical properties. High-resolution X-ray diffractometry demonstrates that the structural grain boundaries present in pure crystals can be eliminated when the crystal is grown with LC doping. Thus, the high alignment capability of LCs has for the first time been utilized to enhance the quality of BP bulk single crystals. The LC-doped crystal exhibits higher optical transparency over its entire transparent region. The optical polarizing behaviour of the doped BP crystal is also improved.

AbstractIdeal sillenite type Bi12FeO20 (BFO) micron sized single crystals have been successfully grown via inexpensive hydrothermal method. The refined single crystal X-ray diffraction data reveals cubic Bi12FeO20 structure with single crystal parameters. Occurrence of rare Fe4+ state is identified via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The lattice parameter (a) and corresponding molar volume (Vm) of Bi12FeO20 have been measured in the temperature range of 30–700 °C by the X-ray diffraction method. The thermal expansion coefficient (α) 3.93 × 10–5 K−1 was calculated from the measured values of the parameters. Electronic structure and density of states are investigated by first principle calculations. Photoelectrochemical measurements on single crystals with bandgap of 2 eV reveal significant photo response. The photoactivity of as grown crystals were further investigated by degrading organic effluents such as Methylene blue (MB) and Congo red (CR) under natural sunlight. BFO showed photodegradation efficiency about 74.23% and 32.10% for degrading MB and CR respectively. Interesting morphology and microstructure of pointed spearhead like BFO crystals provide a new insight in designing and synthesizing multifunctional single crystals.

AbstractFor the first time AgTa0.38Nb0.62O3 (ATN) films have been grown on the La0.7Sr0.3CoO3 (LSCO)/LaAlO3 single crystal as well as onto Pt80Ir20 (PtIr) polycrystalline substrate. Comprehensive X-ray diffraction analyses reveal epitaxial quality of ATN and LSCO films on the LaAlO3(001) substrate, while ATN/PtIr films have been found to be (001) preferentially oriented. Dielectric spectroscopy performed for ATN films and bulk ceramics in a wide temperature range 77 to 420 K shows the structural monoclinic M1-to-monoclinic M2 phase transition occurs in films at the temperature 60 °C lower than in ceramics. The tracing of the ferroelectric hysteresis P-E loops indicates the ferroelectric state in ATN films at temperatures below 125 K and yields remnant polarization of 0.4 μC/cm2 @ 77 K. Weak frequency dispersion, high temperature stability of dielectric properties as well as low processing temperature of 550 °C make ATN films to be attractive for various applications.

Natural FeTiO 3 (illuminate) and synthesized FeTiO 3, single crystals were characterized by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy combined with channeling technique and particle-induced x-ray emission (RBS-C and PIXE). The results obtained by the ion beam analysis were supplemented by the x-ray diffraction analysis to identify the crystallographic phase. Oriented single crystals of synthesized FeTiO 3 were grown under the pressure control of CO 2 and H 2 mixture gas using a single-crystal floating zone technique. The crystal quality of synthesized FeTiO 3 single crystals could be improved by the thermal treatment but the exact pressure control is needed to avoid the precipitation of Fe 2 O 3 even during the annealing procedure. Natural FeTiO 3 contains several kinds of impurities such as Mn , Mg , Na and Si . The synthesized samples contain Al , Si and Na which are around 100 ppm level as impurities. The PBS-C results of the natural sample imply that Mn impurities occupy the Fe sublattice in FeTiO 3 or in mixed phase between ilmenite and hematite.

The structure of the layered noncentrosymmetric titanosilicate AM-1 (also known as JDF-L1, disodium titanium tetrasilicate dihydrate), Na4Ti2Si8O22·4H2O, grown as small single crystals without the use of organics, has been refined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. The H atom has been located for the first time, and the hydrogen-bonding scheme is also characterized by IR and Raman spectroscopy. All atoms are in general positions except for the Na, the Ti, one Ti-bound O, one Si-bound O and the water O atoms (site symmetries 2, 4, 4, 2 and 2, respectively).

The Ag[Formula: see text]Cu[Formula: see text]Se and Ag[Formula: see text]Cu[Formula: see text]Se compounds have been synthesized and grown as single crystals. High-temperature X-ray diffraction method was used to study polymorphic transformations. It is shown that the Ag[Formula: see text]Cu[Formula: see text]Se crystals of high-temperature FCC modification are decomposed into Ag2Se and AgCuSe when the temperature decreases below T = 488 K and Ag[Formula: see text]Cu[Formula: see text]Se is decomposed into Cu2Se and AgCuSe when the temperature decreases below T = 540 K. Transformations in both compounds are reversible. Crystalline parameters are obtained and the temperature dependence of the lattice parameters for each phase is built.
