The aim of this work was to study the effect of samarium oxide doping on a SrTiO3 perovskite ceramic. After analyzing the data obtained on the morphological features of the synthesized structures, it was found that an increase in the dopant concentration led not only to a change in the morphological features, but also in the density of the ferroelectrics. Using the X-ray diffraction method, it was found that doping with Sm2O3 led to the formation of a multiphase system of two cubic phases of SrTiO3 and Sm2O3. At the same time, an increase in the concentration of Sm2O3 dopant led to a change in the crystallinity degree, as well as deformation of the structure. Evaluation of the efficiency of use of synthesized ferroelectrics as catalysts for purification of aqueous media from manganese showed that an increase in the concentration of Sm2O3 dopant led to an increase in purification efficiency by 50–70%.

Magnetic Iron Oxide Quantum Dots (MIOQDs) were synthesized using Moringa oleifera leaves through green technique i.e., Microwave treatment. The synthetic method is highly rapid, simple and economical. MIOQDs were formed by reduction of ferric chloride (FeCl3) solution with Moringa oleifera leaf extract without any influence of alkaline conditions which opens a new arena for the phytosynthesis of nanoparticles. MIOQDs structural characteristics were scrutinized by Powder X-ray diffraction method, FESEM, TEM, UV –Visible Spectroscopy, Photoluminescence Emission Spectroscopy. The ultraviolet-visible spectrum recorded for the aqueous media iron nanoparticles showed an absorption peak at around 330 nm. Powder X-ray diffraction showed that the particles are crystalline in nature, with both hematite and maghemite structure.

The article suggests the usage of ash from sunflower husk combustion, which is constantly considered to be production waste, as a treating agent for electroplating industry wastewater purification. The chemical and mineral composition of ash waste has been researched by means of X-ray diffraction method with an X-ray fluorescent spectrometer. The structure of waste has been studied with a high-resolution scanning electron microscope. The ash contains calcium, magnesium and potassium oxides, so this waste can be used as a chemical treating agent in purifying water from heavy metals. The acid leaching of ash has been performed to determine the degree of its components transition. The trial purification of real electroplating wastes with the ash has been carried out. The purification efficiency for nickel and copper amounts to 62.0 and 48.0 % at the ash consumption 3.0 g/dm3.

Creating crystalline porous materials with large pores is typically challenging due to undesired interpen-etration, staggered stacking, or weakened framework stability. Here, we report a pore size expansion strategy by self-recognizing π-π stacking interactions in a series of two-dimensional (2D) hydrogen–bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), HOF-10x (x=0,1,2), self-assembled from pyrene-based tectons with systematic elongation of π-conjugated molecular arms. This strategy successfully avoids interpene-tration or staggered stacking and expands the pore size of HOF materials to access mesoporous HOF-102, which features a surface area of ~ 2,500 m2/g and the largest pore volume (1.3 cm3/g) to date among all reported HOFs. More importantly, HOF-102 shows significantly enhanced thermal and chemical stability as evidenced by powder x-ray diffraction and N2 isotherms after treatments in chal-lenging conditions. Such stability enables the adsorption of dyes and cytochrome c from aqueous media by HOF-102 and affords a processible HOF-102/fiber composite for the efficient photochemical detox-ification of a mustard gas simulant.

AbstractIn a narrow temperature window in going from the isotropic to highly chiral orders, cholesteric liquid crystals exhibit so-called blue phases, consisting of different morphologies of long, space-filling double twisted cylinders. Those of cubic spatial symmetry have attracted considerable attention in recent years as templates for soft photonic materials. The latter often requires the creation of monodomains of predefined orientation and size, but their engineering is complicated by a lack of comprehensive understanding of how blue phases nucleate and transform into each other at a submicrometer length scale. In this work, we accomplish this by intercepting nucleation processes at intermediate stages with fast cross-linking of a stabilizing polymer matrix. We reveal using transmission electron microscopy, synchrotron small-angle X-ray diffraction, and angle-resolved microspectroscopy that the grid of double-twisted cylinders undergoes highly coordinated, diffusionless transformations. In light of our findings, the implementation of several applications is discussed, such as temperature-switchable QR codes, micro-area lasing, and fabrication of blue phase liquid crystals with large domain sizes.

AbstractIdeal sillenite type Bi12FeO20 (BFO) micron sized single crystals have been successfully grown via inexpensive hydrothermal method. The refined single crystal X-ray diffraction data reveals cubic Bi12FeO20 structure with single crystal parameters. Occurrence of rare Fe4+ state is identified via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The lattice parameter (a) and corresponding molar volume (Vm) of Bi12FeO20 have been measured in the temperature range of 30–700 °C by the X-ray diffraction method. The thermal expansion coefficient (α) 3.93 × 10–5 K−1 was calculated from the measured values of the parameters. Electronic structure and density of states are investigated by first principle calculations. Photoelectrochemical measurements on single crystals with bandgap of 2 eV reveal significant photo response. The photoactivity of as grown crystals were further investigated by degrading organic effluents such as Methylene blue (MB) and Congo red (CR) under natural sunlight. BFO showed photodegradation efficiency about 74.23% and 32.10% for degrading MB and CR respectively. Interesting morphology and microstructure of pointed spearhead like BFO crystals provide a new insight in designing and synthesizing multifunctional single crystals.

The interest in lithium-containing ceramics is due to their huge potential as blanket materials for thermonuclear reactors for the accumulation of tritium. However, an important factor in their use is the preservation of the stability of their strength and structural properties when under the influence of external factors that determine the time frame of their operation. This paper presents the results of a study that investigated the influence of the LiTiO2 phase on the increasing resistance to degradation and corrosion of Li2TiO3 ceramic when exposed to aggressive acidic media. Using the X-ray diffraction method, it was found that an increase in the concentration of LiClO4·3H2O during synthesis leads to the formation of a cubic LiTiO2 phase in the structure as a result of thermal sintering of the samples. During corrosion tests, it was found that the presence of the LiTiO2 phase leads to a decrease in the degradation rate in acidic media by 20–70%, depending on the concentration of the phase. At the same time, and in contrast to the samples of Li2TiO3 ceramics, for which the mechanisms of degradation during a long stay in aggressive media are accompanied by large mass losses, for the samples containing the LiTiO2 phase, the main degradation mechanism is pitting corrosion with the formation of pitting inclusions.

In this study, lanthanide elements (Ln3+) and 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (TFBDC) based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were synthesized by precipitation and diffusion-controlled precipitation methods. Powders insoluble in aqueous media and polar solvents were obtained. The microstructure and properties of Ln3+ MOFs were evaluated and discussed. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and fluorescence spectroscopy (FLS) were carried out to characterize Ln3+ MOF's crystallinity, the microstructure, chemical composition and optical properties.
