The magnetic and transport properties of pulsed laser-deposited Co100−x–Cux thin films were tailored through their nano-morphology and composition by controlling for the deposition geometry, namely normal or oblique deposition, and their Cu content. All films were composed of an amorphous Co matrix and a textured growth of Cu nanocrystals, whose presence and size d increased as x increased. For x = 50, all films were superparamagnetic, regardless of deposition geometry. The normally deposited films showed no in-plane magnetic anisotropy. On the contrary, controllable in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in both direction and magnitude was generated in the obliquely deposited films. The magnetic anisotropy field Hk remained constant for x = 0, 5 and 10, Hk ≈ 35 kAm−1, and decreased to 28 and 26 kAm−1 for x = 20 and 30, respectively. This anisotropy had a magnetostatic origin due to a tilted nano-sheet morphology. In the normally deposited films, the coercive field Hc increased when x increased, from 200 (x = 0) to 1100 Am−1 (x = 30). In contrast, in obliquely deposited films, Hc decreased from 1500 (x = 0) to 100 Am−1 (x = 30) as x increased. Activation energy spectra corresponding to structural relaxation phenomena in obliquely deposited films were obtained from transport property measurements. They revealed two peaks, which also depended on their nano-morphology and composition.

ABSTRACTAmorphous CNx thin films were deposited by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) combined with a nitrogen rf radical beam source which supplies active nitrogen species to the growing film surface. The deposited films were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman scattering, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Nitrogen content of the deposited films increased with increasing rf input power and N2 pressure in the PLD chamber. The maximum N/C ratio 0.23 was obtained at 400 W of rf input power and 1.3 Pa. XPS N 1s spectra shows the existence of several bonding structures in the deposited films. Electrical properties of the deposited films were investigated. The electrical conductivity decreased with increasing N/C atomic ratio. Temperature dependence of electrical conductivity measurements indicated that electronic conduction occurred by variable-range hopping between p electron localized states.

A practical way to manipulate the magnetic anisotropy of magnetostrictive FeGa thin films grown on flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates is introduced in this study. The effect of film thickness on magnetic properties and magnetostriction constant of polycrystalline FeGa thin films was investigated. The anisotropy field Hk of flexible FeGa films, i.e., the saturation field determined by fitting the hysteresis curves measured along the hard axis, was enhanced with increasing the tensile strain applied along the easy axis of the thin films, but this enhancement via strain became unconspicuous with increasing the thickness of FeGa films. In order to study the magnetic sensitivity of thin films responding to the external stress, we applied different strains on these films and measure the corresponding anisotropy field. Moreover, the effective magnetostriction constant of FeGa films was calculated from the changes of both anisotropy field and external strain based on the Villari effect. A Neel’s phenomenological model was developed to illustrate that the effective anisotropy field of FeGa thin films was contributed from both the constant volume term and the inverse thickness dependent surface term. Therefore, the magnetic properties for the volume and surface of FeGa thin films were different, which has been verified in this work by using vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and magneto-optic Kerr effect (MOKE) system. The anisotropy field contributed by the surface of FeGa film and obtained by MOKE is smaller than that contributed by the film volume and measured by VSM. We ascribed the difference in Hk to the relaxation of the effective strain applied on the films with increasing the thickness of films.

Mixed phase TiO2 thin films of rutile and anatase type crystal orientations were deposited on Si substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. When annealed at 800°C at 1 mbar oxygen pressure for 3 h, the deposited films transform into a single phase of rutile type. Structural and morphological studies of the as-deposited and annealed films were performed with X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy was used for optical characterization of the annealed thin films.

LaAlO 3 thin films have been deposited on (100) LaAlO 3 substrates by pulsed laser ablation. The deposited films showed the (h00) preferential orientations. Surface profiles indicated that the surface roughness of the films decreased with the increase of the oxygen partial pressure. High quality superconducting YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 thin films have been successfully deposited by laser ablation on the (100) LaAlO 3 substrates with the LaAlO 3 layers.

AbstractWe have studied the crystallization of the yttrium - iron garnet (Y3Fe5O12, YIG) polycrystalline phase in thin films fabricated by means of pulsed laser deposition . Films were deposited on MgO substrates in vacuum, in argon, and in oxygen. A subsequent post-deposition heat treatment (annealing) was done at 800°C in air. We have shown that the crystallization of YIG was precluded by co-existent parasitic phases present in the as-deposited films. Specifically, the growth of the parasitic phase needs to be suppressed in order to get a single-phase polycrystalline YIG. Lowering the substrate temperature has been shown to be a simple and efficient way to suppress the growth of parasitic phase and to obtain good quality YIG films after thermal treatment. This procedure has been demonstrated to be successful even when the YIG films were grown in vacuum and their composition was significantly out of stoichiometry.

AbstractWe have investigated the Pb depletion in laser ablated PZT (PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3) films through a systematic study of PZT target-laser interactions for both single laser and dual-laser ablation methods. The study includes films deposited from a stoichiometric and an excess PbO PZT targets. The films were deposited on single crystal SrTiO3[100] substrates at 550˚C with a background oxygen pressure of 500 mT. Single laser deposited films at a laser fluence of 5J/cm2 produced the highest Pb content while dual-laser ablated films where an excimer and a CO2 pulsed lasers were synchronized for ablation produced high Pb content for an excimer laser fluence of less than 2J/cm2. This enabled the growth of particulate-free PZT films with high Pb content. ICCD imaging of the plasma plumes showed variations in the expansion profiles at different laser fluencies that correlated well with the Pb content observed in the deposited films.
