This chapter focuses specifically on film and visualising depictions of the connections between disability and posthumanism as they are manifest in a set of contemporary narratives about war and conflict. I use a broad conception of prosthetics to read these intersections, claiming that their articulations of embodiment are disability stories even as they appear to be narratives of hyperability, scientific strength and male authority. The chapter juxtaposes a series of Hollywood features exploring the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan with films made in Iraq and Iran that narrate the conflict from alternative points of view, ones that often lack the kinds of sophisticated technology that so marks American storytelling. In each, the power of the visual, of seeing disabled bodies, is paramount. Seeing the weaponized soldier, as well as the disabilities such technologies produce through the disasters they create, creates a powerful identification that reaches across many aspects of contemporary life, from media images of refugees to stories of disabled veterans. The chapter claims that fiction film, again often full of the messy contradictions that define the meeting of disability and posthumanism, offers opportunities to unpick the terms of this power and the reach of its meanings.

In the United States, as elsewhere, cultural history represents, and is itself shaped by, many points of view. The existence of differing views of cultural history is reflected, in the United States, by the variety and independence of cultural institutions. Such a diversity of approaches does not facilitate the development of a nation-wide overview or of a national databank or national methodologies; however, progress is now being made in terms of cooperation and coordination, especially through the development and acceptance of standards which make different data systems compatible with one another.

In a previous article I have examined shifts of noun phrase forms in Qur'anic narrative texts and found that this kind of shift is strictly associated with the construction of texts and development of stories. It was also found that other categories such as voice, aspect and tense are connected with the shifts of these noun phrase forms. In the present paper I first confirm the argument made in my previous paper: that forms of noun phrases are markers of point of view in narratives. Next, the correlations between these noun phrase forms and various verb forms are inquired into, and the effect of using different noun phrase forms and verb forms in the texts is discussed. The argument is restricted to narratives because these realise textual coherence more than the early fragmentary revelations, and because the points of view in these narratives can be examined through the various persons coming into the stories. In addition, this study focuses on definite noun phrases rather than indefinite ones as, other than when they are first introduced into the texts, the referents in these stories are referred to with definite noun phrases, or more strictly speaking, a number of prophets and other famous persons are frequently introduced with definite noun phrases.

For many years various experiments have been devised in order to find out whether an acquired characteristic can be inherited, but the results on the whole do not appear to have received general scientific sanction. C. P. Martin and Bradford Hill in recent years have both made surveys of this subject, but from different points of view. Martin (1937), in making a survey of the literature on the subject, points out many of the difficulties which confront the experimentalist and indicates possible causes for the apparent discrepancies in results. He also raises the possible existence of a temporary form of inheritance which obeys the Mendelian laws. Hill (1934) reviews a great deal of the work which has been done on the possibility of resistance to bacterial infection being inherited. He points out that much of this work is unconvincing, as it is very difficult in the case of bacterial infections to be quite sure that the offspring of the experimental animals have not been infected to some extent, as well as the parents. The experiments recorded in this paper have resulted from observations made in the course of our work on the propagation of Jensen’s rat sarcoma. This tumour is easily transplanted from one rat to another by subcutaneous inoculation of small grafts, and when a sensitive breed of rat is used the tumour very rarely retrogresses, provided a scrupulous technique is followed (Chambers and Scott 1930). Many years ago we noticed that the offspring of rats in which tumours had disappeared were not so susceptible to the tumour grafts as other rats of the same breed, and it seemed worth while to find out how far this apparently acquired characteristic was transmitted to the offspring. The data now recorded provide evidence in support of the view that this acquired characteristic is transmitted to the offspring to some extent.

A description is given of the minute epiphytic red alga Kylinia rosulata Rosenv. from collections made in the Plymouth area, and from old herbarium material. The diagnostic characters of this and related species are discussed. The minute epiphytic red alga Kylinia rosulata (order Nemalionales, sub class Florideophycidae) was first described by Rosenvinge (1909) from dried specimens of Sporochnus pedunculatus (Huds.) Ag., collected from the Northern Kattegat. Kylinia was observed on the terminal assimilatory filaments of the supporting plant. Since the original description, this small plant has had a somewhat confused history from both the taxonomic and nomenclatural points of view. Feldmann(1963) has recently summarized the available data, and has verified the validity of the genus and species as originally described by Rosenvinge (see also Feldmann, 1958). K. rosulata is characterized by the possession of short prostrate filaments arising from a single attaching cell, each cell containing a parietal chromatophore, and with male plants bearing a hyaline hair-like body—called the ‘androphore’ by Rosenvinge (1909) and ‘spermatocystophore’ by Feldmann (1958).

So-called ‘tutejsi’ in Polesia as a political issue in Poland, 1921–1939This article is an attempt to present the problem of repercussions of the assumption made in the Second Polish Republic that in Polesia there was a compact several hundred thousand group of people that do not have a modern national consciousness. In the interwar period this group was commonly referred to as ‘tutejsi.’ The issue is examined from three perspectives. The first is to reconstruct the position taken in this case by the Polish science, especially the authors gathered around the Institute for Nationalities Affairs (Instytut Badań Spraw Narodowościowych). The second part of the article presents opinions functioning about so-called ‘tutejsi’ in the Polish public opinion. The difference between points of view arising in the 1920s and ’30s is exposed here. The third part focuses on the actions taken by the Polish authorities. In the first half of the ’20s an assumption was formulated that in Polesia this group was dominant, therefore actions must be taken for its Polonization. After the military coup in 1926, the existence of ‘tutejsi’ was to a large extent disputed. The authorities stated that Polesia was populated mainly by Belarusians and Ukrainians. The reversal of this policy dates back to the early 1930s. The theory of the existence of ‘tutejsi’ – and at the same time their domination in Polesia – returned. It was believed they should be not only subject to Polonization, but also that they are particularly susceptible to it.

The study of signal transduction pathways for mechanisms of apoptosis and proliferation has significantly advanced our understanding of human cancer, subsequently leading to more effective treatments. Discoveries of growth factors and oncogenes, especially those that function through phosphorylation on tyrosine residues, have greatly benefited our appreciation of the biology of cancer. The regulation of proliferation and apoptosis through phosphorylation via tyrosine kinases and phosphatases is discussed, as well as the contributions of other systems, such as serine and threonine kinases and phosphatases. Receptors with seven-transmembrane domains, steroid hormones, genes, and "death domains" will also be discussed. This review attempts to compare the regulation of the growth of normal tissues and cancers with an effort to highlight the current knowledge of these factors in the growth regulation of oral/oropharyngeal cancers. Despite the strides made in our understanding of growth regulation in human cancers, the study of oral/oropharyngeal cancer specifically lags behind. More research must be done to further our understanding of oral cancer biology, if we are to develop better, more effective treatment protocols.

The chapter proposes a method for the formal description of enterprises as complex human-technical systems. In distinction from other methods this approach is aimed at the analysis of parallel planning and allocation of resources from different points of view. The method is valid for every hierarchical level of enterprise subdivision. It allows the design of decision making systems for various tasks of coordinated planning and allocation of resources. The optimal decisions are made in parallel for different subdivisions and subsystems, then the generalised decision for the global task is determined.

More than 30 years have passed since the successful detection of supernova (SN) neutrinos from SN 1987A. In the last few decades, remarkable progress has been made in neutrino detection techniques, through which it may be possible to detect neutrinos from a new source, presupernova (pre-SN) neutrinos. They are emitted from a massive star prior to core bounce. Because neutrinos escape from the core freely, they carry information about the stellar physics directly. Pre-SN neutrinos may play an important role in verifying our understanding of stellar evolution for massive stars. Observation of pre-SN neutrinos, moreover, may serve as an alarm regarding an SN explosion a few days in advance if the progenitor is located in our vicinity, enabling us to observe the next galactic SN. In this review, we summarize the current status of pre-SN neutrino studies from both the theoretical and observational points of view.
