Laser shock peening has established itself as an effective surface treatment to enhance the fatigue properties of metallic materials. Although a number of works have dealt with the formation of residual stresses, and their consequent effects on the fatigue behavior, the influence of material geometry on the peening process has not been widely addressed. In this paper, Laser Peening without Coating (LPwC) is applied at the surface of a notch in specimens made of a 6082-T6 aluminum alloy. The treated specimens are tested by three-point bending fatigue tests, and their fatigue life is compared to that of untreated samples with an identical geometry. The fatigue life of the treated specimens is found to be 1.7 to 3.3 times longer. Brinell hardness measurements evidence an increase in the surface hardness of about 50%, following the treatment. The material response to peening is modelled by a finite element model, and the compressive residual stresses are computed accordingly. Stresses as high as −210 MPa are present at the notch. The ratio between the notch curvature and the laser spot radius is proposed as a parameter to evaluate the influence of the notch.

One possibility to improve the fatigue life and strength of metallic materials is shot peening. However, at elevated temperatures, the induced residual stresses may relax. To investigate the influence of shot peening on high-temperature fatigue behavior, isothermal fatigue tests were conducted on shot-peened and untreated samples of gamma TiAl 48-2-2 at 750 °C in air. The shot-peened material was characterized using EBSD, microhardness, and residual stress analyses. Shot peening leads to a significant increase in surface hardness and high compressive residual stresses near the surface. Both effects may have a positive influence on lifetime. However, it also leads to surface notches and tensile residual stresses in the bulk material with a negative impact on cyclic lifetime. During fully reversed uniaxial tension-compression fatigue tests (R = −1) at a stress amplitude of 260 MPa, the positive effects dominate, and the fatigue lifetime increases. At a lower stress amplitude of 230 MPa, the negative effect of internal tensile residual stresses dominates, and the lifetime decreases. Shot peening leads to a transition from surface to volume crack initiation if the surface is not damaged by the shots.

The purpose of the present research project is to study multiaxial fatigue behavior of 2618 alloy. The influence of mean stress on the fatigue behavior under tension and torsion is particularly investigated. Fatigue tests under combined tensile-torsion, in or out of phase, as well as combined tensile-torsion-internal pressure tests have also been conducted. Multiaxial fatigue results are analyzed according to Fatemi-Socie criterion to predict the fatigue life.

Polymers operating in various weathering conditions must be assessed for lifetime performance. Particularly, ultraviolet (UV) radiations alters the chemical structure and therefore affect the mechanical and fatigue properties. The UV irradiation alters the polymer chemical structure, which results into a degradation of the mechanical and fatigue behavior of the polymer. The polymer properties degradation due to UV irradiation is the result of a competitive process of chain scission versus post-crosslinking. Although few studied investigated the effect of UV irradiation on the mechanical behaviour of thermoplastics, fewer examined the UV irradiation effect on the fatigue life of polymers. This study focuses on investigating the effect of UV irradiation on the fatigue properties of bulk semi-crystalline polymer; the low density Polyethylene (LDPE). Tensile specimens were exposed to different dose values of UV irradiation then subjected to fatigue loading. The fatigue tests were achieved under constant stress amplitude at a frequency of 1Hz. The results show an important decrease of the fatigue limit with increasing absorbed UV irradiation dose.

The effects of ultrasonic deep rolling (UDR) on the fatigue behavior of pre-corroded 7A52 aluminum alloys were investigated. By means of X-Ray diffraction stress measurements and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), residual stress and fractograph of 7A52 aluminum alloys with and without UDR treatment were analyzed. The results indicated that the UDR produced compressive residual stresses with depth approaching 1mm. UDR treatment can extend the fatigue life of the pre-corroded 7A52 specimens to a large extent, depending on the level of corrosion and UDR parameter. For the slightly corrode specimens, the UDR treatment changed the fatigue crack nucleation site from surface to the transition zone between the compressive residual stresses and tensile stresses, resulted in a much longer fatigue life. For the severely corrode specimens, the crack still nucleated by intergranular cracking, however, due to the compressive residual stresses introduced and the closure of the corrosion pits and corrosion micro-crocks, UDR treatment still improved fatigue performance of the pre-corroded 7A52 aluminum alloy substantially.

To evaluate the effect of coatings on the fatigue behaviors of turbine rotor steel, TiN and TiAlN films were deposited on the 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steels by arc-ion plating (AIP) method with and wihtout screen ion filter. The coating thickness were varied with 2.5 μm, 3.5 μm, and 5.0 μm. A Cu-K α beam source was used as a characteristic X-ray and the crystal plane of (422) was selected to evaluate the residual stresses. In order to clear the relationship between fatigue behavior and residual stress of specimen coated with TiN and TiAlN films, the fatigue tests of specimens with and without coating were carried out at room temperatures respectively. It is shown that the fatigue life of the coated specimen was longer than that of uncoated specimen. The compressive residual stresses on the coatings were higher, and the fatigue crack initiated at an inclusion in the substrate near bond interface. It is known that compressive residual stress caused by hard coating would retard the fatigue crack initiation on the specimen surface, and then led to fatigue strength and fatigue life increasing.

Fatigue mechanical behavior of wrought aluminum alloy (Al-Mg-Si) 6156 at T4 temper is experimentally investigated. Constant-amplitude fatigue tests, at fixed stress ratio R = 0.1, were carried out, and the respective stress–life diagram was constructed and compared against the competitive 6xxx aluminum alloys, for example, 6082 and 6061. Fatigue endurance limit of AA6156 was found to be approximately 155 ± 5 MPa, that is, almost 30% below yield stress Rp of the material. AA6156 presents almost 50% higher fatigue life in the high-cycle fatigue area and approximately 20% higher fatigue endurance limit, when compared with other 6xxx series aluminum alloys. Significant work hardening was induced due to fatigue and was experimentally validated by the measurements of residual stiffness of fatigue loops as well as of absorbed energy per fatigue loop. Work-hardening exponent was essentially decreased by almost 25% from the first fatigue cycles and up to 10% of fatigue life. Fracture surfaces of specimens loaded at applied stresses close to fatigue endurance limit exhibited signs of coarse voids due to the formed precipitates at the matrix. The fracture mechanism was a mixture of transgranunal and intergranular fracture for the fatigue specimens tested at higher applied fatigue loadings.

t Fretting fatigue damage occurs in contacting parts when they are subjected to fluctuating loadingsand sliding movements at the same time. This phenomenon may occur in many applications such asbearings/ shafts, bolted and riveted connections, steel cables, and steam and gas turbines. In this paper,the effect of elevated temperature on fretting fatigue life of Al7075-T6 is investigated using a new device forfretting fatigue tests with variable crank shaft mechanism. Also a finite element modeling method was usedto estimate crack propagation lifetime in aluminum alloy, Al7075-T6 specimens at elevated temperatureunder fretting condition. In this method, shear and normal stresses that are caused by contact load areupdated at each crack growth increment. Finally, a comparison between the experimental and numericalresults is done in order to evaluate the FE simulation.Department of mechanical engineering, Islamic Azad University, Takestan Branch, Takestan, IranThe experimental results show that: (i) fretting fatigue life of the material increases with temperature up to350°C by 180% for low stresses and decreases by 40% for high stresses, (ii) this fashion of variation offretting fatigue life versus temperature is believed to be due to degradation of material properties whichoccurs by overaging and wear resistance increase due to oxidation of aluminum alloy. While overaginggives rise to degradation of mechanical strength of material and hence the reduction of its fretting fatiguelife, surface oxidation of the specimens brings some improvement of fatigue behavior of the material.Metallurgical examination of the specimens reveals that temperature results in precipitation of impurities ofal-7075-T6. The size of precipitated impurities and their distances gets bigger as temperature increases.This could be a reason for material degradation of specimens which are exposed to heating for longer timeduration.

Abstract The effect of WC-Co coating on the high cycle fatigue (HCF) behavior of SAE 12L14 steel and 2024-T4 aluminum was investigated. The fatigue tests were performed at room temperature and 370°C. The fatigue life distributions of specimens in the polished, grit blasted, peened, and coated conditions are presented as a function of the probability of failure. HVOF sprayed WC-Co coating has influenced the fatigue life of aluminum and steel. Factors contributing to this influence, which include grit blasting, elastic modulus, and residual stress, are discussed. A three-dimensional finite-element model (FEM) of the coated specimen was used to calculate the stress distribution across the coating and the substrate. The results of the analytical model are in good agreement with fatigue lives observed experimentally.

Open link lifting chain is routinely proof loaded during manufacture. However, the effect of residual stresses imposed by this operation on the fatigue strength of the chain has not been quantitatively investigated. This paper discusses the results of constant amplitude fatigue tests on open link chain segments which have received proof loading at various levels. The chain was initially heat treated to relieve manufacturing residual stresses and then proof loaded at levels ranging from 0 to 82 percent of its break strength. Tests were performed at two different mean loads and four different load amplitudes. Failure site trends are noted as a function of applied loading and are correlated with results of a finite element stress analysis. Residual stresses are estimated using strains measured from strain gages placed at critical locations on individual links during the proof load operation. Residual stress estimates are used with standard fatigue damage parameters to estimate the fatigue life of the chain and predictions are compared to data. Proof loading was shown to substantially increase the fatigue life of the chain. Residual stresses can explain the increase in fatigue life. Neuber’s rule demonstrated the ability to model the data trends.

ABSTRACT Aluminum and its alloys are widely used in the aeronautics industry due to its high lightness and ductility, and it can add other elements, thus changing its characteristics. Fatigue is the major cause of failure of metal materials due to the dynamic and oscillating stresses of the finished materials. The objective of this work is to evaluate the effect of Shot Peening with coverage percentages 1blasting, 3 blasting and 10 blasting in fatigue life of aluminum alloy AA 7475-T351. Shot Peening is a cold surface treatment used to increase fatigue life of the alloy by inducing residual stresses of compression on the surface of the part. In the Shot Peening process, spherical steel grids of type S230 were used, in which the specimens were subjected to 1blasting, 3 blasting and 10 blasting coverage in two stress levels (42 Ksi and 50 Ksi). The results presented in the fatigue tests and electron scanning (SEM) showed the increase in the mechanical properties of all the samples, and those exposed to 1 blasting and 3 blasting presented better results.
