Base-catalyzed depolymerization of black liquor retentate (BLR) from the kraft pulping process, followed by ultrafiltration, has been suggested as a means of obtaining low-molecular-weight (LMW) compounds. The chemical complexity of BLR, which consists of a mixture of softwood and hardwood lignin that has undergone several kinds of treatment, leads to a complex mixture of LMW compounds, making the separation of components for the formation of value-added chemicals more difficult. Identifying the phenolic compounds in the LMW fractions obtained under different depolymerization conditions is essential for the upgrading process. In this study, a state-of-the-art nontargeted analysis method using ultra-high-performance supercritical fluid chromatography coupled to high-resolution multiple-stage tandem mass spectrometry (UHPSFC/HRMSn) combined with a Kendrick mass defect-based classification model was applied to analyze the monomers and oligomers in the LMW fractions separated from BLR samples depolymerized at 170–210 °C. The most common phenolic compound types were dimers, followed by monomers. A second round of depolymerization yielded low amounts of monomers and dimers, while a high number of trimers were formed, thought to be the result of repolymerization.

The earliest account of the contamination of electron microscope specimens by the deposition of carbonaceous material during electron irradiation was published in 1947 by Watson who was then working in Canada. It was soon established that this carbonaceous material is formed from organic vapours, and it is now recognized that the principal source is the oil-sealed rotary pumps which provide the backing vacuum. It has been shown that the organic vapours consist of low molecular weight fragments of oil molecules which have been degraded at hot spots produced by friction between the vanes and the surfaces on which they slide. As satisfactory oil-free pumps are unavailable, it is standard electron microscope practice to reduce the partial pressure of organic vapours in the microscope in the vicinity of the specimen by using liquid-nitrogen cooled anti-contamination devices. Traps of this type are sufficient to reduce the contamination rate to about 0.1 Å per min, which is tolerable for many investigations.

Abstract The main purpose of this research was the identification and characterization of low-molecular-weight glutenin subunit (LMW-GS) composition in common wheat and the determination of the effect of these proteins on the rheological properties of dough. The use of capillary zone electrophoresis and reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography has made it possible to identify four alleles in the Glu-A3 and Glu-D3 loci and seven alleles in the Glu-B3 locus, encoding LMW-GSs in 70 varieties and breeding lines of wheat tested. To determine the technological quality of dough, analyses were performed at the microscale using a TA.XT Plus Texture Analyzer. Wheat varieties containing the Glu-3 loci scheme (Glu-A3b, Glu-A3f at the Glu-A3 locus; Glu-B3a, Glu-B3b, Glu-B3d, Glu-B3h at the Glu-B3 locus; Glu-D3a, Glu-D3c at the Glu-D3 locus) determined the most beneficial quality parameters.

AbstractThe fundamental reason for the environmental pollution caused by the papermaking industry is the inadequate treatment of the black liquor. How to dispose of the lignin macromolecules, which is the main pollutants in the black liquor, is the key to addressing the environmental pollution. At present, cross-flow membrane filtration is one of the effective ways to retain and recycle lignin macromolecules in black liquor. The paper proposes the adoption of a dynamic blade cross-flow membrane filtration equipment provided by German BOKELA company to treat papermaking black liquor. The experiment shows that when the black liquor is treated with dynamic blade rotation cross-flow, the membrane with a molecular weight cut-off of nanofiltration (NP010) delivers the best retaining effect, with 28 % more lignin in black liquor than that in untreated black liquor. Meanwhile, when the blade rotational speed reaches 300 rpm and the transmembrane pressure is 0.5 or 2 bar, the flux of black liquor through nanofiltration NP010 is relatively desirable.

The present investigation undertook a systematic investigation of the molecular weight (MW) of kraft lignins throughout the pulping process to establish a correlation between MW and lignin recovery at different extents of the kraft pulping process. The evaluation of MW is crucial for lignin characterization and utilization, since it is known to influence the kinetics of lignin reactivity and its resultant physicochemical properties. Sweetgum and pine lignins precipitated from black liquor at different pHs (9.5 and 2.5) and different extents of kraft pulping (30–150 min) were the subject of this effort. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) was used to deter- mine the number average molecular weight (Mn), mass average molecular weight (Mw), and polydispersity of the lignin samples. It was shown that the MW of lignins from both feedstocks follow gel degradation theory; that is, at the onset of the kraft pulping process low molecular weightlignins were obtained, and as pulping progressed, the molecular weight peaked and subsequently decreased. An important finding was that acetobromination was shown to be a more effective derivatization technique for carbohydrates containing lignins than acetylation, the technique typically used for derivatization of lignin.

Abstract In this work, from an endemic and non-significant value-added bamboo argentine, nanofibrils (CNFs) of 20 nm in width were obtained. These nanofibrils were chemical modified in surface with three simple steps using a noncommercial low molecular weight polylactic acid. The success of modification was confirmed by FTIR, TGA, DSC and XRD analysis. The modified nanofibrils were taken up for changing surface properties in films based on commercial PLA. The results show that dispersive (γ D/S) component of films increase of 34.7 mN/m to 36.1 mN/m after the addition of modified nanofibrils from 2 to 5% in formulation of the films, comparing with a physical blend. Interesting others result in physical, mechanical, and thermal properties of the nanocomposites, were reported.

The exopolysaccharides produced by six strains of Clavibacter michiganensis ssp. sepedonicus were isolated and purified by liquid chromatography. Neutral sugar composition and molecular weights were determined for each polysaccharide fraction, using gas chromatography and high-performance size-exclusion chromatography. The serological reaction of each fraction was tested using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Exopolysaccharide from nonmucoid strains contained only low molecular weight polysaccharides (1.5 × 103 to 1.1 × 104). Exopolysaccharide from mucoid and intermediate strains could be separated into low (4.0 × 103 to 1.1 × 104) molecular weight and high (5.0 × 105 to 1.6 × 106) molecular weight fractions. High molecular weight polysaccharides were composed almost exclusively of galactose, glucose, and fucose. The ratios of these sugars were highly variable among strains. Low molecular weight polysaccharides were primarily composed of galactose with significant and varying amounts of glucose, rhamnose, mannose, and ribose. All polysaccharide fractions except one, produced by a nonmucoid strain, reacted in the immunoassay test.Key words: exopolysaccharide, polysaccharide, Clavibacter, michiganensis, sepedonicus.

A model consistent with the kinetics of phosphorus in epilimnetic lake water was developed. Adding 32PO4 to lake water and separating the major forms of dissolved phosphorus by Sephadex gel filtration showed that the exchange mechanism between inorganic phosphate and the particulate fraction predominates. At the same time, a low-molecular-weight phosphorus compound is excreted which combines with colloids in lake water, releasing phosphate from the colloid and making the phosphate available for "transfer" again. This rapid cycling of phosphorus between the four principal forms — the particulate fraction, the low-molecular-weight P compound, colloidal P, and phosphate — appears to contribute to formation of colloids in lake water. No direct complexing of phosphate to the colloid was observed. Only in the presence of algae, bacteria, and other particulate matter did the radioactive phosphorus move to the low-molecular weight and the colloidal forms. The low-molecular-weight compound is negatively charged, as is the colloidal P, but to a lesser degree. Both are removed by anion exchange materials along with phosphate, but the rate that they move into the fraction removed by membrane filtration is different from that for phosphate. When filtrate is refiltered a large amount of the colloidal P is retained by the filter. This complicates measurements of transfer and makes previous studies on utilization of dissolved organic phosphorus of doubtful value since corrections for filter retention were rarely, if ever, made.
