Herein, a comprehensive review is given focusing on the chemical profiles of the essential oils (EOs), non-volatile compounds, ethnobotany, and biological activities of different Haplophyllum (Rutaceae family) species. To gather the relevant data, all the scientific databases, including Scopus, ISI-WOS (Institute of Scientific Information-Web of Science), and PubMed and highly esteemed publishers such as Elsevier, Springer, Taylor and Francis, etc., were systematically retrieved and reviewed. A wide array of valuable groups of natural compounds, e.g., terpenoids, coumarins, alkaloids, lignans, flavonoids, and organic acids have been isolated and subsequently characterized in different organic extracts of a number of Haplophyllum species. In addition, some remarkable antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, cytotoxic, antileishmanial, and antialgal effects as well as promising remedial therapeutic properties have been well-documented for some species of the genus Haplophyllum.

Background: Plants from the Geranium genus, which comprises about 400 species, have been used since ancient times in the practice of traditional medicines throughout the world. Therefore, herbal preparations based on Geranium species have found wide usage for the treatment of a variety of ailments. The aim of this work is to present a review, as comprehensive as possible, of the studies concerning different biological activities of Geranium species. Methods: Relevant data were obtained through systematic computer searches from major reputed scientific databases, particularly Web of Science and Scopus. Occasionally, information issued in primary sources not covered by these databases was also included provided published as peer-reviewed literature. This review covers the literature disclosed till the end of 2018. Results: ccompanying the increasing interest in herbal medicines in general, the evaluation of the biological properties of medicinal plants from the Geranium genus has been addressed thoroughly, mostly over the last two decades. Geranium species are endowed with a number of different biological activities. Herein, we present a survey of the results of the studies concerning these different biological activities. Conclusion: Most studies found in the literature effectively contribute to scientifically validate the beneficial properties of Geranium plants claimed by traditional medicines and medical herbalism and demonstrate that many of them possess evident therapeutic properties.

Plants from the Rosacea family are rich in natural molecules with beneficial biological properties, and they are widely appreciated and used in the food industry, perfumery, and cosmetics. In this review, we are considering Rosa damascena Mill., Rosa alba L., Rosa centifolia L., and Rosa gallica L. as raw materials important for producing commercial products, analyzing and comparing the main biological activities of their essential oils, hydrolates, and extracts. A literature search was performed to find materials describing (i) botanical characteristics; (ii) the phytochemical profile; and (iii) biological properties of the essential oil sand extracts of these so called “old roses” that are cultivated in Bulgaria, Turkey, India, and the Middle East. The information used is from databases PubMed, Science Direct, and Google Scholar. Roses have beneficial healing properties due to their richness of beneficial components, the secondary metabolites as flavonoids (e.g., flavones, flavonols, anthocyanins), fragrant components (essential oils, e.g., monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes), and hydrolysable and condensed tannins. Rose essential oils and extracts with their therapeutic properties—as respiratory antiseptics, anti-inflammatories, mucolytics, expectorants, decongestants, and antioxidants—are able to act as symptomatic prophylactics and drugs, and in this way alleviate dramatic sufferings during severe diseases.

This study investigates the variations in the chemical profiles and biological activities (antioxidant and cytotoxic) of Eplingiella fruticosa from the state of Sergipe, an endemic species from the Northeast region of Brazil. The essential oils were extracted from six populations by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC/MS-FID. Cluster analysis was performed with the data of the constituents of the essential oils, and then a dissimilarity matrix, based on Euclidean distances, and a dendrogram, through the Ward clustering method, were constructed. The antioxidant activity of the essential oils was tested by different assays (DPPH, ABTS, β-carotene, and FRAP), and cytotoxic activity was tested by the SRB assay. The compounds found in greater amounts were α-pinene, β-pinene, 1,8-cineole, camphor, borneol, δ-elemene, α-cubebene, α-ylangene, (E)-caryophyllene, germacrene D, bicyclogermacrene, trans-calamenene, spathulenol, caryophyllene oxide, and viridiflorol. These compounds defined the formation of two groups. The first group was composed of the populations of São Cristóvão, Itaporanga, Japaratuba, and Malhada dos Bois municipalities and was characterized by the presence of the monoterpene camphor (8.39-11.27%) as the compound of greatest concentration in relation to the other municipal areas. The second group was composed of the populations of Moita Bonita and Pirambu municipalities and was characterized by the major presence of the sesquiterpene bicyclogermacrene (7.45% and 10.98%). The plants exhibited weak effects in terms of antioxidant activity; however, the essential oil showed significant toxicity for the lines A549 (51.00% cell viability) in the population of Japaratuba, and B16F10 (64.94% cell viability) in Malhada dos Bois. The observations of this study may open a way to optimize the use of the E. fruticosa populations in relation to their cytotoxic properties.

Piper hispidum Sw. (Piperaceae) (syn. Piper hispidinervum) is a medicinal shrub distributed in Central and South America, widely used as an astringent, diuretic, stimulant for unblocking the liver and stopping hemorrhages. The plant has great interest among researchers due to the production of essential oil and important raw material for the chemical industry, which has a high demand for cosmetic, insecticide, and pesticide industries. In this review, traditional uses, phytochemicals, and biological activities of P. hispidum are comprehensively and systematically summarized through searching scientific databases, including Science Direct, PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science. Phytochemical studies revealed the presence of amides, benzoic acids, flavonoids, phenylpropanoids, butenolides, phenol, and essential oils; hence it has several activities, such as antioxidant, antibacterial, α-amylase, insecticidal, schistosomicidal, leishmanial, larvicidal, antiplasmodial, cytotoxicity, estrogenic and serotonergic properties. This review is expected to draw the attention of medical professionals and the general public towards P. hispidum as well as to open the door for detailed research in the future.

The genus Diplazium (family: Athyriaceae) comprises approximately 350 species of pteridophytes. Diplazium esculentum (Retz.) Sw. is an important member of this genus and commonly known as a wild vegetable in the Himalayan and sub-Himalayan communities. According to the literature analysis, D. esculentum was traditionally used for the prevention or treatment of several diseases such as diabetes, smallpox, asthma, diarrhea, rheumatism, dysentery, headache, fever, wounds, pain, measles, hypertension, constipation, oligospermia, bone fracture, and glandular swellings. Various extracts of D. esculentum were evaluated to elucidate their phytochemical and pharmacological activities. A wide array of pharmacological properties such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, immunomodulatory, CNS stimulant, and antianaphylactic activities have been recognized in different parts of D. esculentum. The review covers a systematic examination of pharmacognosy, phytochemistry, and pharmacological applications of D. esculentum, but scientifically, it is not fully assessed regarding complete therapeutic effects, toxicity, and safety in the human body. The published literature on D. esculentum and its therapeutic properties were collected from different search engines including Wiley online, PubMed, Springer Link, Scopus, Science Direct, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and ACS publications by using specific terms such as “Diplazium esculentum, bioactive compounds, biological activities and health benefits” from 1984 to 2021 (March). Therefore, further studies are required to identify the detailed action mechanism of D. esculentum in vitro/in vivo, and also, more studies should focus on conservation, cultivation, and sustainable utilization of the species.

AbstractThe Lauraceae family is predominantly found in Asia and in the rainforests of the Americas, and consists mostly of aromatic trees. Being an essential oil producer, this family is used in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. This work presents a systematic review of the chemical composition and bioactivity of the essential oils from the Lauraceae family. Medline, Scielo, Web of Science, Lilacs, and Scopus were employed to identify articles published between 2000 and 2018, using “Lauraceae”, “essential oil”, and “biological activity” as key words. From 177 studies identified, 53 met the inclusion criteria. These studies indicated a predominance of the compounds β-caryophyllene and 1,8-cineole in Lauraceae species, and highlighted the antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory activities. Essential oils extracted from this family thus have high potential for pharmacological applications.

Survey have proven the popular Canellaceae family use to treat various diseases such as: muscular pains, infections, stomatitis, anti-malaric, healing, among others. The main use of these species is in the extracts form and essential oils extracted from the leaves and stem. Highlighting the importance of this family on the pharmacological point of view and the fact that few studies in the literature have reported the characterization of the essential oils compounds and their respective biological activities. The objective of this study was to carry out a systematic review of previous studies on essential oils of the Canellaceae family species and their biological activities. The databases Scopus, Web of Science and PubMed were used for the search and a bibliographical manager was used. A total of 143 files were analyzed, of which 21 presented the phytochemical analysis and / or essential oils biological activities of these species. Few species have been studied so far, such as Canella winterana, Cinnamosma fragans, Cinnamosma madagascariensis, Cinnamodendron dinisii. It can be observed that the major constituents for these species essential oils were: 1,8-cineol, linalool, limonene, alpha and beta-pinene. And that the main proven activities were: antibiotic, antifungal, insecticide, larvicide, trypanocidal, cytotoxic, molluscicide, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory and anticonvulcionate. From this literature review, it was possible to identify species that have not yet started studies and possible activities of their essential oils, mainly due to the almost homogeneous presence of the major constituents, making possible new research as well as projects and programs.

Lauraceae families have great diversity in the world’s tropical regions and are represented mainly by aromatic shrubs and trees with significant production of essential oils (EOs). This work presents a review of the EO chemical profiles from specimens of Aniba, including their seasonal variations, geographical distributions, and biological activities in the Amazon biome. Based on the survey, 15 species were reviewed, representing 167 oil samples extracted from leaves, twig barks, and woods. Brazilian Amazon was the most representative geographic area in the number of specimens, highlighting the locations Belém, (Pará state, PA) (3 spp., 37 samples), Santarém (PA) (3 spp., 10 samples), Carajás (PA) (3 spp., 7 samples), and Manaus (Amazonas state, AM) (3 spp., 16 samples). The main compound classes identified in oils were benzenoids and phenylpropanoids, represented by 1-nitro-2-phenylethane, benzyl salicylate, benzyl benzoate and methyleugenol, along with terpenoids, especially monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes, such as linalool, α-phellandrene, β-phellandrene, β-selinene, and spathulenol. The EOs from Aniba showed considerable variation in the chemical profiles according to season and collection site. The hierarchical cluster analysis classified the samples into two main groups according to chemical composition. This review highlights its comprehensive and up-to-date information on history, conservation, traditional uses, chemosystematics, pharmacological potential of Aniba species.

The plants from genus Origanum are common folk Chinese herbs used to treat a variety of diseases. They are also used as a spice, a seasoning, and an ornament. Origanum plants are rich in essential oils and also have other compounds including terpenoids, flavonoids, organic acids, and sterols. They have a variety of biological activities such as antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, growth-promoting, antibacterial, antioxidant, and anticancer properties. The chemical components and biological effects of genus Origanum were summarized by different scientific databases such as Web of Science, SciFinder, Baidu Scholar, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and SpringerLink. In conclusion, recent studies were mainly focused on the activities of their essential oils. The research studies for nonvolatile constituents and their pharmacological activities are few. Therefore, research on compounds in genus Origanum plants can be strengthened and their application prospect can be explored so as to make better use of the resources of these plants.
