Probiotics are defined as live microorganisms that when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit to the host. Their positive supplementation outcomes on several gastrointestinal disorders are well defined. Nevertheless, their actions are not limited to the gut, but may also impart their beneficial effects at distant sites and organs. In this regard, in this review article we: (i) comprehensively describe the main mechanisms of action of probiotics at distant sites, including bones, skin, and brain; (ii) critically present their therapeutic potential against bone, skin, and neuronal diseases (e.g., osteoporosis, non-healing wounds and autoimmune skin illnesses, mood, behavior, memory, and cognitive impairments); (iii) address the current gaps in the preclinical and clinical research; and (iv) indicate new research directions and suggest future investigations.

Many important sporting events are organized in hot ambient conditions. In addition, given the global warming around the world, and because heat also concerns millions of people living in hot-dry and/or hot-humid environments, individuals often perform cognitive and/or cognitivo-motor tasks under heat stress conditions. Hot environment can negatively affect aerobic and high intensity performances and can also negatively influence mental performances and cognitive function as executive functions and attention. This review was realized in order to provide a better understanding of the influence of the heat on cognition as attentional processes. In addition, applied recommendations and strategies (e.g., acclimation, cooling, mental technics), that individuals can use during learning, training or competitions performed in hot environments, are discussed. Finally, new directions in research are proposed.

Natural products have been used by humanity for many centuries to treat various illnesses and with the advancement of technology, it became possible to isolate the substances responsible for the beneficial effects of these products, as well as to understand their mechanisms. In this context, myristicin, a substance of natural origin, has shown several promising activities in a large number of in vitro and in vivo studies carried out. This molecule is found in plants such as nutmeg, parsley, carrots, peppers, and several species endemic to the Asian continent. The purpose of this review article is to discuss data published in the last 10 years at Pubmed, Lilacs and Scielo databases, reporting beneficial effects, toxicity and promising data of myristicin for its future use in medicine. From 94 articles found in the literature, 68 were included. Exclusion criteria took into account articles whose tested extracts did not have myristicin as one of the major compounds.

Abstract Recommender systems provide personalized service support to users by learning their previous behaviors and predicting their current preferences for particular products. Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly computational intelligence and machine learning methods and algorithms, has been naturally applied in the development of recommender systems to improve prediction accuracy and solve data sparsity and cold start problems. This position paper systematically discusses the basic methodologies and prevailing techniques in recommender systems and how AI can effectively improve the technological development and application of recommender systems. The paper not only reviews cutting-edge theoretical and practical contributions, but also identifies current research issues and indicates new research directions. It carefully surveys various issues related to recommender systems that use AI, and also reviews the improvements made to these systems through the use of such AI approaches as fuzzy techniques, transfer learning, genetic algorithms, evolutionary algorithms, neural networks and deep learning, and active learning. The observations in this paper will directly support researchers and professionals to better understand current developments and new directions in the field of recommender systems using AI.

Psychopathic individuals account for substantial predatory and impulsive violence. To the present, the principal intervention used to decrease the harm inflicted by psychopaths has been confinement. Nevertheless, most confined psychopathic persons return to the community. Recent advances in the understanding of the neurobiology of psychopathy hold promise for new research directions and more effective treatments. In this article, we will explore recent advances in genetics, electrophysiology, brain imaging, and psychopharmacology, as well as, in brief, their implications for new directions in research and treatment.

Stroke, also known as cerebral ischemia, is a common neurological disease. The therapeutic potential of MLC901 (NeuroAiD II™) has been reported in clinical trials on traumatic brain injury as well as in animal and cell models. MLC901 reduced the infarction size, ischemia-induced neurological deficits and pro-inflammatory infiltration of phagocyte. It also inhibited the ischemia-induced expression of pro-inflammatory mediators and Prx6, TLR4 signalling, and phosphorylation of NFκB. We found that the beneficial effects of MLC901 are in coherent with studies performed on the individual active ingredient. MLC901 may develop its efficacy through a synergistic effect via nine herbal extracts. MLC901 is a multifaceted traditional Chinese medicine. A cocktail of herbs provides a broader spectrum of targets. This may surpass single-target drug treatment in terms of side effect and therapeutic efficacy. MLC901 leads to various potential research directions on the development or improvement of a feasible, effective and promising herbal formulation for treating stroke patients.

Chronic ulcerative and hard-healing wounds are a growing global concern. Skin substitutes, including acellular dermal matrices (ADMs), have shown beneficial effects in healing processes. Presently, the vast majority of currently available ADMs are processed from xenobiotic or cadaveric skin. Here we propose a novel strategy for ADM preparation from human abdominoplasty-derived skin. Skin was processed using three different methods of decellularization involving the use of ionic detergent (sodium dodecyl sulfate; SDS, in hADM 1), non-ionic detergent (Triton X-100 in hADM 2), and a combination of recombinant trypsin and Triton X-100 (in hADM 3). We next evaluated the immunogenicity and immunomodulatory properties of this novel hADM by using an in vitro model of peripheral blood mononuclear cell culture, flow cytometry, and cytokine assays. We found that similarly sourced but differentially processed hADMs possess distinct immunogenicity. hADM 1 showed no immunogenic effects as evidenced by low T cell proliferation and no significant change in cytokine profile. In contrast, hADMs 2 and 3 showed relatively higher immunogenicity. Moreover, our novel hADMs exerted no effect on T cell composition after three-day of coincubation. However, we observed significant changes in the composition of monocytes, indicating their maturation toward a phenotype possessing anti-inflammatory and pro-angiogenic properties. Taken together, we showed here that abdominoplasty skin is suitable for hADM manufacturing. More importantly, the use of SDS-based protocols for the purposes of dermal matrix decellularization allows for the preparation of non-immunogenic scaffolds with high therapeutic potential. Despite these encouraging results, further studies are needed to evaluate the beneficial effects of our hADM 1 on deep and hard-healing wounds.

ABSTRACTLow dimensionality provides opportunities to modify the properties of bulk materials dramatically and to control materials properties independently in a manner that is not possible for bulk materials. The special characteristics of low dimensional materials to enhance thermoelectric performance have already been demonstrated in quantum wells, quantum wires and quantum dots. The main focus of this review is a summary of advances made in the modeling of quantum dot superlattice nanowires. Several new research directions for low dimensional thermoelectricity or inspired by this research are briefly mentioned.

Changes in gut microbiota composition are associated with a variety of gastrointestinal disorders, including inflammatory bowel diseases, diarrhoea and hepatic diseases. Probiotics, which are live microorganisms which can provide the host a health benefit when ingested, are widely used as a treatment to treat these gastrointestinal (GI) conditions by changing the microbiota's composition or behaviour. This analysis aimed to address show probiotics' minimal utility for GI conditions guidelines. The researcher used several papers and reviews from before. The findings of this study are a compilation of previous research, and Cochrane's systematic analysis of probiotics for GI disorders indicates that probiotics may have beneficial effects on diarrheal conditions and associated gastrointestinal symptoms. Finally, updated systematic reviews are required to reflect the entirety of existing research on probiotic treatments in the study. The results from the presented analysis would help to provide more reliable guidelines for the clinical use of probiotics' and its limited value for gastrointestinal disorders and recognize gaps in GI related probiotic research.

Purpose – The purpose of this literature review is to analyze current trends in information security and suggest future directions for research. Design/methodology/approach – The authors used literature review to analyze 1,588 papers from 23 journals and 5 conferences. Findings – The authors identified 164 different theories used in 684 publications. Distribution of research methods showed that the subjective-argumentative category accounted for 81 per cent, whereas other methods got very low focus. This research offers implications for future research directions on information security. They also identified existing knowledge gaps and how the existing themes are studied in academia. Research limitations/implications – The literature review did not include some dedicated security journals (i.e. Cryptography). Practical implications – The study reveals future directions and trend that the academia should consider. Originality/value – Information security is top concern for organizations, and this research analyzed how academia dealt with the topic since 1977. Also, the authors suggest future directions for research suggesting new research streams.
