Thirty infrasound sensors have been operated over Japan since 2015. We developed the irregular array data processing in order to detect and estimate the parameters of the arrival source waves by using infrasound data related to the sequence of the volcanic eruption at Mt. Shinmoedake in March 2018. We found that the apparent velocity at the ground was equal to the acoustic velocity at particular reflection levels. The results were confirmed through a comparison of the findings of the apparent velocity with a wave propagation simulation on the basis of the azimuth, infrasound time arrivals, and the state of the atmospheric background using global atmospheric models. In addition, simple ideas for estimating horizontal wind speeds at certain atmospheric altitudes based on infrasound observation data and their validation and comparison were presented. The calculated upper wind speed and wind observed by radiosonde measurements were found to have a qualitative agreement. Propagation modeling for these events estimated celerities in the propagation direction to the sensors that were consistent with the tropospheric and stratospheric ducting. This study could inspire writers, in particular, and readers, in general, to take advantage of the benefits of infrasound wave remote-sensing for the study of the Earth’s atmospheric dynamics.

AbstractStratospheric winds play a significant role in middle atmosphere dynamics, model research, and carrier rocket experiments. For the first time, 65 sets of rocket sounding experiments conducted at Jiuquan (41.1°N, 100.2°E), China, from 1967 to 2004 are presented to study horizontal wind fields in the stratosphere. At a fixed height, wind speed obeys the lognormal distribution. Seasonal mean winds are westerly in winter and easterly in summer. In spring and autumn, zonal wind directions change from the upper to the lower stratosphere. The monthly zonal mean winds have an annual cycle period with large amplitudes at high altitudes. The correlation coefficients for zonal winds between observations and the Horizontal Wind Model (HWM) with all datasets are 0.7. The MERRA reanalysis is in good agreement with rocketsonde data according to the zonal winds comparison with a coefficient of 0.98. The sudden stratospheric warming is an important contribution to biases in the HWM, because it changes the zonal wind direction in the midlatitudes. Both the model and the reanalysis show dramatic meridional wind differences with the observation data.

<p>The uncertainties in the infrasound technology arise from the middle atmospheric disturbances, which are partly underrepresented in the atmospheric models such as in the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) products used for infrasound propagation simulations. In the framework of the ARISE (Atmospheric dynamics Research InfraStructure in Europe) project, multi-instrument observations are performed to provide new data sets for model improvement and future assimilations. In an unexpected way, new observations using the autonomous CORAL lidar showed significant differences between ECMWF analysis fields and observations in Argentina in the period range between 0.1 and 10 days. The model underestimates the wave activity, especially in the summer. During the same season, the infrasound bulletins of the IS02 station in Argentina indicate the presence of two prevailing directions of the detections, which are not reflected by the simulations. Observations at the Haute Provence Observatory (OHP) are used for comparison in different geophysical conditions. The origin of the observed anomalies are discussed in term of planetary waves effect on the infrasound propagation.</p>

Abstract Simulations of orographic precipitation over the low mountain ranges of southwestern Germany and eastern France with two different physics-based linear precipitation models are presented. Both models are based on 3D airflow dynamics from linear theory and consider advection of condensed water and leeside drying. Sensitivity studies for idealized conditions and a real case study show that the amount and spatial distribution of orographic precipitation is strongly controlled by characteristic time scales for cloud and hydrometeor advection and background precipitation due to large-scale lifting. These parameters are estimated by adjusting the model results on a 2.5-km grid to observed precipitation patterns for a sample of 40 representative orography-dominated stratiform events (24 h) during a calibration period (1971–80). In general, the best results in terms of lowest rmse and bias are obtained for characteristic time scales of 1600 s and background precipitation of 0.4 mm h−1. Model simulations of a sample of 84 events during an application period (1981–2000) with fixed parameters demonstrate that both models are able to reproduce quantitatively precipitation patterns obtained from observations and reanalyses from a numerical model [Consortium for Small-scale Modeling (COSMO)]. Combining model results with observation data shows that heavy precipitations over mountains are restricted to situations with strong atmospheric forcings in terms of synoptic-scale lifting, horizontal wind speed, and moisture content.

AbstractStrong turbulence was encountered by the German High-Altitude Long-Range Research Aircraft (HALO) at flight level 430 (13.8 km) on 13 October 2016 above Iceland. In this event the turbulence caused altitude changes of the research aircraft of about 50 m within a period of approximately 15 s. Additionally, the automatic thrust control of the HALO could not control the large gradients in the horizontal wind speed and, consequently, the pilot had to switch off this system. Simultaneously, the French Falcon of Service des Avions Français Instrumentés pour la Recherche en Environnement (SAFIRE), flying 2 km below HALO, also encountered turbulence at almost the same location. On that day, mountain-wave (MW) excitation and propagation was favored by the alignment of strong surface winds and the polar front jet. We use a combination of in situ observations, ECMWF and empirical turbulence forecasts, and high-resolution simulations to characterize the observed turbulent event. These show that a pronounced negative vertical shear of the horizontal wind favored overturning and breaking of MWs in the area of the encountered turbulence. The turbulent region was tilted upstream and extended over a distance of about 2 km in the vertical. The analyses suggest that HALO was flying through the center of a breaking MW field while the French Falcon encountered the lower edge of this region. Surprisingly, the pronounced gradients in the horizontal wind speeds leading to the deactivation of the automatic thrust control were located north of the breaking MW field. In this area, our analysis suggests the presence of gravity waves that could have generated the encountered modulation of the horizontal wind field.

A wind measurement campaign using a single scanning light detection and ranging (LiDAR) device was conducted at the Hazaki Oceanographical Research Station (HORS) on the Hazaki coast of Japan to evaluate the performance of the device for coastal wind measurements. The scanning LiDAR was deployed on the landward end of the HORS pier. We compared the wind speed and direction data recorded by the scanning LiDAR to the observations obtained from a vertical profiling LiDAR installed at the opposite end of the pier, 400 m from the scanning LiDAR. The best practice for offshore wind measurements using a single scanning LiDAR was evaluated by comparing results from a total of nine experiments using several different scanning settings. A two-parameter velocity volume processing (VVP) method was employed to retrieve the horizontal wind speed and direction from the radial wind speed. Our experiment showed that, at the current offshore site with a negligibly small vertical wind speed component, the accuracy of the scanning LiDAR wind speeds and directions was sensitive to the azimuth angle setting, but not to the elevation angle setting. In addition to the validations for the 10-minute mean wind speeds and directions, the application of LiDARs for the measurement of the turbulence intensity (TI) was also discussed by comparing the results with observations obtained from a sonic anemometer, mounted at the seaward end of the HORS pier, 400 m from the scanning LiDAR. The standard deviation obtained from the scanning LiDAR measurement showed a greater fluctuation than that obtained from the sonic anemometer measurement. However, the difference between the scanning LiDAR and sonic measurements appeared to be within an acceptable range for the wind turbine design. We discuss the variations in data availability and accuracy based on an analysis of the carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) distribution and the goodness of fit for curve fitting via the VVP method.

AbstractIn order to gain more insight into the mountain snow-transport mechanisms wind and drift flux measurements have been executed on a ridge crest (mainly during snow-storms). Horizontal wind-speed profiles, measured between 0.3 and 6 m above snow surface, show a hump-shaped course especially for strong winds. Theoretical approximations substantiate that the Bernoullian pressure decrease on the crest may be the main cause for this type of wind profile. Roughness parameters (Z0, u⋆) are determined with the aid of the wind profiles and compared with those reported in the literature. Corresponding drift density profiles coincide with steady-state drift theories as long as wind speeds are low (u1≤ 7-10 m s-1), at greater wind speeds snow plumes of 1 to 1.5 m thickness develop immediately above snow surface. Areal measurements on snow mass-balance differences between windward and lee slopes are used to approximate the total transport over the ridge crest and to derive a quantitative relationship between crest winds and drift-snow deposition on lee slopes.

Abstract. Comparisons are made between horizontal wind measurements carried out using a VHF-radar system at Aberystwyth (52.4°N, 4.1°W) and radiosondes launched from Aberporth, some 50 km to the south-west. The radar wind results are derived from Doppler wind measurements at zenith angles of 6° in two orthogonal planes and in the vertical direction. Measurements on a total of 398 days over a 2-year period are considered, but the major part of the study involves a statistical analysis of data collected during 75 radiosonde flights selected to minimise the spatial separation of the two sets of measurements. Whereas good agreement is found between the two sets of wind direction, radar-derived wind speeds show underestimates of 4–6% compared with radiosonde values over the height range 4–14 km. Studies of the characteristics of this discrepancy in wind speeds have concentrated on its directional dependence, the effects of the spatial separation of the two sets of measurements, and the influence of any uncertainty in the radar measurements of vertical velocities. The aspect sensitivity of radar echoes has previously been suggested as a cause of underestimates of wind speeds by VHF radar. The present statistical treatment and case-studies show that an appropriate correction can be applied using estimates of the effective radar beam angle derived from a comparison of echo powers at zenith angles of 4.2° and 8.5°.

ABSTRACTA method is given for determining the stability of small sinusoidal oscillations in the steady laminar flow of a horizontal wind over the surface of a liquid at rest (with particular reference to the flow of air over water), taking into account viscosity, gravity and surface tension. It is shown that there are two fundamental types of oscillation of the system, which may be called ‘water’ waves and ‘air’ waves, and curves showing the conditions for neutral stability of these two types of wave are given for a range of wind speeds from 100 to 300 cm./sec.

Abstract. This study quantifies the uncertainties in winds measured by the Aberystwyth Mesosphere-Stratosphere-Troposphere (MST) radar (52.4° N, 4.0° W), before and after its renovation in March 2011. 127 radiosondes provide an independent measure of winds. Differences between radiosonde and radar-measured horizontal winds are correlated with long-term averages of vertical velocities, suggesting an influence from local mountain waves. These local influences are an important consideration when using radar winds as a measure of regional conditions, particularly for numerical weather prediction. In those applications, local effects represent a source of sampling error additional to the inherent uncertainties in the measurements themselves. The radar renovation improved the SNR of measurements, with correspondingly improved altitude coverage. It also corrected an under-estimate of horizontal wind speeds attributed to beam formation problems, due to component failure pre-renovation. The standard error in radar-measured winds averaged over half-an-hour increases with wind speed and altitude, and is 0.6–2.5 m s−1 (5–20% of wind speed) for post-renovation horizontal winds. Pre-renovation values are typically 0.4 m s−1 (0.03 m s−1) larger. The standard error in radial velocities is < 0.04 m s−1. Eight weeks of special radar operation are used to investigate the effects of echo power aspect sensitivity. Corrections for echo power aspect sensitivity remove an underestimate of horizontal wind speeds, however aspect sensitivity is azimuthally anisotropic at the scale of routine observations (≈ 1 h). This anisotropy introduces additional random error into wind profiles. For winds averaged over half-an-hour, the random error is around 3.5% above 8 km, but as large as 4.5% in the mid-troposphere.

Abstract. Shipboard measurements of eddy covariance DMS air/sea fluxes and seawater concentration were carried out in the North Atlantic bloom region in June/July 2011. Gas transfer coefficients (k660) show a linear dependence on mean horizontal wind speed at wind speeds up to 11 m s−1. At higher wind speeds the relationship between k660 and wind speed weakens. At high winds, measured DMS fluxes were lower than predicted based on the linear relationship between wind speed and interfacial stress extrapolated from low to intermediate wind speeds. In contrast, the transfer coefficient for sensible heat did not exhibit this effect. The apparent suppression of air/sea gas flux at higher wind speeds appears to be related to sea state, as determined from shipboard wave measurements. These observations are consistent with the idea that long waves suppress near surface water side turbulence, and decrease interfacial gas transfer. This effect may be more easily observed for DMS than for less soluble gases, such as CO2, because the air/sea exchange of DMS is controlled by interfacial rather than bubble-mediated gas transfer under high wind speed conditions.
