The sustainability of the human settlement space environment is an eternal subject of human exploration. There hides the idea of human settlement space in an externally displayed material environment. This paper takes Dai villages in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan as the research object. Dai villages are the place where the ancestors of Dai people live, produce, and collectively construct human settlement, production, and spirit. Taking field investigation data and maps of Dai settlement areas as data sources, this paper explores Dai people’s view of human settlement space, analyzes the spatial cultural connotation of Dai villages, and the concept of sustainable human settlements ecology through the analysis of the factors of the villages’ spatial form. The survey results are as follows: (1) the villages are usually located at river valleys and basin areas, which are characteristic of facing the sun and near the water, embodying the persevering ecological concept of “adapting to local conditions and coexisting with nature”. (2) Dai people are one of the earliest “rice-growing nationalities”. Dai people’s settlements have formed a sustainable human settlement ecological space and the spatial pattern of “water-forest-field-village” is an organic whole. (3) The combination of Dai’s primitive religious ecology and Southern Buddhist culture has formed the characteristic of “advocating nature and Buddhism” and a unique concept of settlement space.

This work presents the results of a study about the reproductive behavior of riverine women living in the Sustainable Development Reserve Amanã, in the Middle Solimões region, state of Amazonas. The study was done in 2001 with the objective of identify aspects of the reproductive behavior of 83 women, collected through reproductive history methodology. These women live in small localities along the rivers and lakes in the middle of the Amazonian forest. The study identified that these women initialize their reproductive period at the age of 17, in average, and the mean age of their last pregnancy occurs at the age of 42, considering those above 50 years old. 36% of these 83 women had lost one or more of their children before the age of five. Only 16% use contraceptives and 12% are sterilized. They don’t have access to the basic health assistance in a regular basis and the local midwives are extremely important in their assistance during pregnancy and delivery. This study em phasizes the importance of reproductive health programs including those social and cultural local conditions.

AbstractIn the last decade, self-healing materials have become extremely appealing for the field of space applications, due to their technological evolution and the consequent possibility of designing space systems and structures able to repair autonomously after damage arising from impacts with micrometeoroids and orbital debris, from accidental contact with sharp objects, from structural fatigue or simply due to material aging. The integration of these novel materials in the design of spacecraft structures would result in increased reliability and safety leading to longer operational life and missions. Such concepts will bring a decisive boost enabling new mission scenario for the establishment of new orbital stations, settlement on the Moon and human exploration of Mars.The proposed review aims at presenting the newest and most promising self-healing materials and associated technologies for space application, along with the issues related to their current technological limitations in combination with the effect of the space environment. An introductory part about the outlooks and challenges of space exploration and the self-healing concept is followed by a brief description of the space environment and its possible effects on the performance of materials. Self-healing materials are then analysed in detail, moving from the general intrinsic and extrinsic categories down to the specific mechanisms.

The productive protection of intangible cultural heritages, always in the form of tourism development under the present context, is put forward by Chinese scholars, which are beneficial to both the protection of the heritage and the economy development of the locals. While not all intangible cultural heritages can be understood and accepted by tourists due to the reasons that the living circumstances and contexts of these heritages are changing and disappearing that it’s hard for tourists to understand, neither do they desire to pay for it. Therefore, how to make tourists even including some craftsmen understand and accept the heritage means a lot to the protection and inheritance of these heritages. The paper argues that the Involvement Theory can be referred to analyze settle the problems. A case study of the farmers’ painting in Xinji County, Hebei Province was carried out as the example, which is one of the most representative intangible cultural heritage of folk art in Hebei Province, China, with a long history of development, rich cultural connotation and high artistic value. A field investigation and deep-interview was carried out to gather the information of its status quo, problems of its inheriting and developing were analyzed, the paper found that with the development of the times and society, farmers’ painting is losing its survival environment, the income of farmers’ painting is not proportional to their putting-in and cost, the value of farmers painting can not be reflected, and the productive protection is seriously hindered. Therefore, based on the perspective of involvement theory, this study analyzed the bottleneck of productive protection of Xinji Farmers’ Painting, suggested how to stimulate the involvement of tourists into the understanding and producing and creation of the paintings in order to promote the inheritance of the heritage.

After analysis of yichang traditional dwellings protection present situation and the value of the development of cultural tourism,The author of this paper intends to use the protection of the traditional dwellings in Yichang and its sustainable utilization as a starting point to establish the new image of Yichang cultural tourism, which can not only promote the development of the tourism industry in Yichang, as well as play a big role in the protection of traditional houses. Due to the deficiency of Yichang, which was shown in Part of the development of traditional folk tourism . So I put forward that we should make full use of the local traditional culture and fully explore the cultural connotation of local-style dwelling houses, so as to improve the residents living facilities. Also appeal for a rational look at developmental relationship between traditional dwelling and cultural tourism, seeking the best way to protect traditional residence and its tourism sustainable development.

To summarize the problems and needs of the current rural life, identify the pathway that suits the sustainable development of rural areas, and propose the design concept and method that meet the current rural ecological design requirements. Use the organized research approaches. This chapter makes a case study of Nanma Village, provides the theoretical and design practice reference for the rural sustainable development in China, and establishes the knowledge and methodology system that meets the requirements of rural sustainable development. This chapter proposes the design concept and method in line with the current requirements of rural ecological design, suggests that the current village design should be adapted to “local conditions,” and indicates that the harmonious development between human and environment will be a new possible direction for the rural sustainable development and design in future.

In recent years, investment on China’s exhibition buildings rises sharply, but problems like over-warming of the exhibition hall construction, structural surplus, and low utilization rate occur. On the basis of analyzing the current development status of China’s exhibition buildings, this paper takes Nanning International Convention & Exhibition Center as an example to develop the investigation and study, and proposes the sustainable development strategy pointedly from building space environment and planning management, etc. The study is expected to provide reference for the sustainable development of similar domestic exhibition buildings.

In the current large-scale construction of village planning process, village construction provides better productive, living, ecological conditions for rural areas. However, whether we can balance economic development and sustainable development of environment means whether the benefit of village development can be permanent. This paper clarified how to protect the environment during the process of strengthening village economics and to balance village construction and environment protection so as to achieve the goal of sustainable development. Taking the Beiwu Village planning of Shihe Town Shanhaiguan District Qinhuangdao City as an example, this paper explored the possibility and underlying dynamism of village construction and the sustainable development of environment. Combined with the characters of the natural and economic development of villages and adjusting measures to local conditions, this project optimized the combination of construction and environment as well as rural industries and village landscape, making Beiwu Village into “a paradise for tourists, the homes of farmers, the garden of Shanhaiguan District, the ecological garden of Qinhuangdao city”, which provided a reference for the village construction and the sustainable development of environment.

Abstract In water-scarce areas with low grain yields, people have to expand the farmland scale to gain more food. Rapid expansion of agricultural scale may lead to a higher risk of re-abandonment of wasteland due to waterless irrigation in water-deficient areas. Against this background, this study proposed a water resources regulation-allocation coupling model. The ‘regulation’ is to control the water consumption of agriculture and regulate the utilized scale with water resources as the main constraint; the ‘allocation’ is to optimize the water resources allocation among crops and arrange the crop planting system according to the water quota for different crops and the economic, social and ecological benefits brought by crops, so as to control the water resources among crops. Afterwards, taking an agro-pastoral ecotone in Northwest China as the study case, schemes of feasible agricultural scale and planting structure suitable for local conditions were obtained. Lastly, the matching patterns of land and water resources were raised gradually from ‘poor’ into ‘good’ degree from 2015 to 2030. This study is expected to provide a reference for controlling the ordered and balanced development of land and water resources of agriculture as well as effectively improving the sustainable development ability in water-deficient areas.

As the most influential commercial port center of ancient Huizhou, Tunxi Old Street is an important material carrier of Hui culture. In the current optimization of urban stock, it is faced with problems such as the decline of regional culture and the homogeneity of spatial form. By combing the historical evolution and value characteristics of Tunxi Old Street, introducing the concept of microregeneration, exploring the strategy of micro-regeneration of historical and cultural districts, this paper realizes the sustainable development of district from three dimensions of urban venation restoration, node space activation and building characteristics shaping, which can provide reference for the regeneration of other historical and cultural districts.

Abstract. The world is at a crossroads. The current global pandemic has had an impact on every person, their national and global economies, and their ability to preserve a sustainable environment. To understand the health impacts of such an intrusive consequence requires understanding of the pandemic’s cause, its spread among populations, preventive measures to contain its spread and plans for protecting people from future outbreaks. Each one of these factors requires specific types of data and each data point requires location to make it meaningful. This is complicated because of the extent of the challenges. It is further complicated by the lack of timely data, the required location precision, and concerns over policy issues like privacy. Maps, mapping, and cartographers are needed as part of the formula for finding solutions on each of these factors.The International Cartographic Association (ICA) is positioned to help in providing solutions. The structure of the ICA, through its various programs, is sufficiently flexible to respond to these critical issues in practical ways that yield useful results. As an example, new ICA Working Groups were recently established to focus on sustainability and bolstering national mapping and national geospatial organizations while a longer-term commitment centers on a revised research agenda to meet current and future cartographic and GIScience needs. These examples are in addition to other components of the ICA program including the ICA Commissions, conferences, and publications.As the pandemic is global, local to global solutions are needed. The ICA has been actively engaged with the United Nations through the UN Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management. Three UN initiatives, two of which are geospatial frameworks, call out to the cartographic community for their help. The first is the Sustainable Development Goals that began in 2015 with a 2030 target to focus on a better understanding of national populations, their economies and their environments. Measuring and monitoring progress requires data, processes, systems, leadership, and commitment to be effective. The second effort is the Integrated Geospatial Information Framework, the next rendition of National Spatial Data Infrastructures (NSDI), that focuses on nine Strategic Pathways that are needed to create and maintain a sustainable geospatial program. The third initiative responds to the statistical and geospatial communities working together to create the Global Statistical Geospatial Framework which focuses on the integration of these two linked data types.Cartographers can contribute in two areas. The first calls on their knowledge and expertise in working with different data types. For example, geospatially referenced statistical data oftentimes benefits from basic generalization principles such as combination, simplification, exaggeration and displacement. The absence of a small-area global geography sometimes inhibits the usefulness of statistical information which has become painfully evident during this pandemic. The second area that calls out to cartographers is to use their skills in making as many useful maps as possible. These maps need to show current local conditions, illuminate deficiencies, tell a story, and/or inform strategies and plans for addressing the many challenges we face between the pandemic and the underlying conditions of people, their communities, and circumstances oftentimes outside of their control.The presentation shows examples of some of these points and the ICA’s participation thus far. Opportunities for involvement are left to the imaginations of each of us. What is needed now is for cartographers and the cartographic community to act in ways that help in solving current challenges, informing some of the root causes and systemic problems that need attention while outlining approaches for a path forward in our ever increasingly complex world.
