Waste management has become a pressing environmental, social, and economic issue. In Ghana, the government has decentralized the waste management system to include private sector actors as key players to improve the collection, disposal, and recycling of waste. With this development, a heterogeneous population of entrepreneurs has engaged in waste recycling, achieving mixed results in terms of performance. The aim of this paper is to identify shared personality traits and characteristics of entrepreneurs that make certain firms engage in waste recycling more innovatively than others. An extensive literature review was used to identify these personality traits and characteristics, which were then modeled using upper echelon theory (UET) to investigate their impact on innovation performance. A regression analysis approach was adopted based on the data collected from 157 entrepreneurs’ founders, co-founders, and shareholders among the waste recycling firms in Ghana selected for the annual Supporting Entrepreneurs for Environment and Development (SEED) Award competition. The key contribution of this research is to better understand the relationship between entrepreneur traits and innovation performance. Given the fact that in small start-ups, the founder plays the most important role, this paper serves as a foundation for defining individual-level factors critical in sustaining sustainable innovation performance in the waste recycling sector. The results of this study will help shareholders and policymakers better understand and implement strategies for determining and selecting innovative waste recycling entrepreneurs.

E-waste is a rising problem given the volumes of e-waste being generated and the content of both toxic and valuable materials in them. This new kind of waste has raised serious concerns regarding their disposition and recycling all over the world. Having hazardous components in television and computer monitors (lead, mercury, and cadmium) and in circuit boards (nickel, beryllium, and zinc), the recycling and discarding of e-waste becomes a key concern. Disposal of e-waste poses serious environmental and health hazards. However, these problems can be tackled with the help of a circular approach. In this backdrop, the chapter discusses the problem of e-waste management in India, the related environmental and health issues in e-waste handling and disposal. It also discusses e-waste recycling practices in India and the current policy level interventions by the government. The chapter also highlights the possible business opportunities offered by the circular approach to e-waste management.

Malaysia has seen a high rate of economic growth in past couple of decades hand in hand with an ever increasing size of population. As a consequence, the issue of sustainable waste management has become an important priority for policymakers and other stakeholders of the society. Although there are potentials to recycle up to 80 per cent of the total dry wastes collected, currently most of them are deposited into various landfill sites. Waste treatment facilities are also insufficient in the country. The government has introduced SWM Act 2007 along with other initiatives to improve the waste management scenario, but more needs to be done to be able to recycle and treat a major portion of the wastes. Based on studies on the state of Selangor in Malaysia, this paper this paper attempts to analyse the waste management scenario of Malaysia and the problems and prospects of waste recycling there. The paper will help the policy makers, waste management strategists, local administrators and researchers in the field to formulate sustainable policies and identify further areas of study in the relevant field.

Solid waste management is a disturbing issue in Nigerian cities as waste generation is increasing. The informal waste management sector has intensified efforts partly due to failure of government to manage waste effectively in the country. Hence, this study focuses on activities of waste recyclers in a rapidly growing city of Nigeria Ota in Ogun State. Its specific objectives are to examine spatial attributes of recycling depots, and examine recycling potentials and challenges. Data were obtained through semi-structured interview and observation. 11 recycling depot operators (recyclers) were purposively interviewed out of 20 operators making up the Recyclers Association. Majority of recycling depots are secured on a lease agreement with monthly rent ranging from N4,000 (US$11.11) to N21,667 (US$60.19). 72.7% recyclers are motivated by job opportunities made possible by recycling: 65% of recycling workers at the recymonthly salary is between N4,500 (US$12.50) and N15,000 (US$41.67). Major challenges of recyclers are lack of funds, complaint by neighbors and non-recognition by the government. Recycling depots are not regulated by government agencies and thus, recycling depots develop without planning permits. Finally, recommendations toward achieving sustainable recycling were presented.

One of the most serious challenges that city dwellers face in a developing nation is unsatisfactory solid waste management. This research investigates the impact of entrepreneurial innovation in solid waste recycling capacity in Abuja, federal capital city of Nigeria. The study employs a survey approach entailing the use of questionnaire for primary data collection. The data collected were analysed using a regression statistical technique. The findings of the study reveal that entrepreneurial activities can be used to enhance competencies in sustainable solid waste management in Abuja, Nigeria. Specifically, we found that entrepreneurial innovation has a significant positive effect on solid waste recycling capacity (p < 0.01). The study concludes that entrepreneurial innovation will encourage efficiency and effectiveness in solid waste recycling practices in Abuja, Nigeria. The study, therefore, recommends that the government should put in place structures that encourage entrepreneurial innovation in solid management so as to enhance the sustainable solid waste recycling capacity in Abuja, Nigeria. Solid waste recycling has long been thought of as playing an important role in solid waste management. This research affirms that entrepreneurial innovation would aid the improvement of the solid waste recycling capacity thereby optimising the chances of achieving sustainable solid waste management in Abuja, Nigeria. Currently there is a paucity of studies that examine the effects of entrepreneurial innovation specifically on solid waste recycling and sustainable development in Abuja, Nigeria. This study contributes an important additional dimension in the search for sustainable solid waste management in Abuja, Nigeria.

New technologies and increasing opportunities in sustainable development propel start-ups in the green economy. For an emerging economy such as India, the government is focusing heavily on creating a green economy through changes and development of its governmental policies to strengthen green practices among entrepreneurs and other businesses. Specifically, though, India is focused on creating more marketable solutions for the bottom-of-the-income population. Nonetheless, for green entrepreneurs, starting a business is not easy and even more difficult within the workings of sustainability and other external barriers. Barriers may include weak institutional frameworks, weak supply chains, lack of infrastructure, or lack of regulations, which are more problematic in emerging economies. The chapter defines green entrepreneurship and the green economy while discussing India's policy agendas and path towards green market solutions. It then presents a case study about a green start-up, Carbon Masters, and their path towards an innovative waste management solution.

Despite several attempts by the government, such as enactment of new laws and pursuing privatisation, Malaysia is still lagging behind significantly in sustainable waste management practices, particularly in the area of recycling. Based on studies conducted in the Selangor state of Malaysia, this paper attempts to analyse the current waste management practices of Malaysia along with their problems and prospects, and examine the steps taken by the government and other stakeholders for attaining sustaining waste management practices. The paper will help the policy makers, waste management strategists, local administrators and researchers in the field to formulate sustainable policies and identify further areas of study in the relevant field.

The article explores ways of forming a modern concept of rational nature management of agricultural waste. The analysis of the nomenclature of agricultural waste was carried out, their influence on the environmental situation was studied. The modern technologies of rational nature management of agricultural waste are systematized, the most promising areas of waste recycling are identified. The ecological effect of the application of technologies for the rational environmental management of agricultural waste was studied.

The purpose of this study is to provide an understanding of the factors influencing green warehouse practices (GWP) in the Malaysian warehouse industry. Both stakeholder theory (ST) and institutional theory (IT) act as the foundation in developing the theoretical framework. Six factors were identified resulted from preliminary data gathering and an extensive literature review for constructing the model. The sample size consists of 226 respondents with the acceptance rate of 89 per cent. The findings revealed that customer demand, owner support, employee involvement, top management commitment, industry competition, and governmental pressure are positively associated with GWP. Based on the findings, warehouse companies and relevant authorities in Malaysia should focus on the importance of GWP towards becoming more competitive in the global market. The study provides a theoretical gap by proposing a valuable implication to scholars and practitioners in promoting sustainable industrial development which aligns with the government national agenda.

Personal concerns about climate change and the environment are a powerful motivator of sustainable behavior. People’s level of concern varies as a function of a variety of social and individual factors. Using data from 58,748 participants from a nationally representative German sample, we tested preregistered hypotheses about factors that impact concerns about the environment over time. We found that environmental concerns increased modestly from 2009-2017 in the German population. However, individuals in middle adulthood tended to be more concerned and showed more consistent increases in concern over time than younger or older people. Consistent with previous research, Big Five personality traits were correlated with environmental concerns. We present novel evidence that increases in concern were related to increases in the personality traits neuroticism and openness to experience. Indeed, changes in openness explained roughly 50% of the variance in changes in environmental concerns. These findings highlight the importance of understanding the individual level factors associated with changes in environmental concerns over time, towards the promotion of more sustainable behavior at the individual level.
