Ballasted tracks are common in the railway system as a means of providing the necessary support for the sleepers and the rails. To keep them operational, tamping and other maintenance actions are performed based on track geometry measurements. Ballast particle rearrangement, which is caused by train load, is one of the most important factors leading to track degradation. As a result, when planning maintenance, it is vital to predict the behaviour of the ballast under cyclic loading. Since ballast is a granular matter with a nonlinear and discontinuous mechanical behaviour, the discrete element method (DEM) was used in this paper to model the ballast particle rearrangement under cyclic loading. We studied the performance of linear and nonlinear models in simulating the settlement of the sleeper, the lateral deformation of the ballast shoulder and the porosity changes under the sleeper. The models were evaluated based on their ability to mimic the ballast degradation pattern in vertical and lateral direction. The linear contact model and the hysteretic contact model were used in the simulations, and the effect of the friction coefficient and different damping models on the simulations was assessed. An outcome of this study was that a nonlinear model was proposed in which both the linear and the hysteretic contact models are combined. The simulation of the sleeper settlement and the changes in the porosity under the sleeper improved in the proposed nonlinear model, while the computation time required for the proposed model decreased compared to that required for the linear model.

In order to observe the end of primary consolidation (EOP) of cohesive soils with and without subjecting to cyclic loading, reconstituted specimens of clayey soils at various Atterberg’s limits were used for oedometer test at different loading increments and undrained cyclic shear test followed by drainage with various cyclic shear directions and a wide range of shear strain amplitudes. The pore water pressure and settlement of the soils were measured with time and the time to EOP was then determined by different methods. It is shown from observed results that the time to EOP determined by 3-t method agrees well with the time required for full dissipation of the pore water pressure and being considerably larger than those determined by Log Time method. These observations were then further evaluated in connection with effects of the Atterberg’s limit and the cyclic loading history.

This chapter covers multiple regression and links statistical inference to general topics such as lurking variables that arose earlier. Many examples can be used to illustrate multiple regression, but we have found it useful to come to class prepared with a specific example, with computer output (since our students learn to run the regressions on the computer). We have found it is a good strategy to simply use a regression analysis from some published source (e.g., a social science journal) and go through the model and its interpretation with the class, asking students how the regression results would have to differ in order for the study’s conclusions to change. The chapter includes examples that revisit the simple linear model of height and income, involve the class in models of exam scores, and fit a nonlinear model (for more advanced classes) for golf putting.

Railway infrastructure must meet safety requirements concerning its construction and operation. Track geometry monitoring is one of the most important activities in maintaining the steady technical conditions of rail infrastructure. Commonly, it is performed using complex measurement equipment installed on track-recording coaches. Existing low-cost inertial sensor-based measurement systems provide reliable measurements of track geometry in vertical directions. However, solutions are needed for track geometry parameter measurement in the lateral direction. In this research, the authors developed a visual measurement system for track gauge evaluation. It involves the detection of measurement points and the visual measurement of the distance between them. The accuracy of the visual measurement system was evaluated in the laboratory and showed promising results. The initial field test was performed in the Vilnius railway station yard, driving at low velocity on the straight track section. The results show that the image point selection method developed for selecting the wheel and rail points to measure distance is stable enough for TG measurement. Recommendations for the further improvement of the developed system are presented.

In the development of 3G devices, all elements of multimedia (text, image, audio, and video) are becoming crucial choice for communication. The secured system in 3G devices has become an issue of importance, on which lot of research is going on. The traditional cryptosystem like DES, AES, and RSA do not able to meet with the properties of the new generation of digital mobile devices. This paper presents an implementation of video protection of fully encrypted using Elliptic Curve   Cryptography (ECC) on a mobile device. The Android platform is used for this purpose.  The results refer that the two important criteria of video mobile encryption: the short computation time required and high confidentially are provided.

Abstract A technique termed space partitioning is employed which dramatically reduces the computation time required to detect dynamic collision during computer simulation. The simulated environment is composed of two nonconvex polyhedra traversing two general six degree of freedom trajectories. This space partitioning technique reduces collision detection time by subdividing the space containing a given object into a set of linear partitions. Using these partitions, all testing can be confined to the local region of overlap between the two objects. Further, all entities contained in the partitions inside the region of overlap are ordered based on their respective minimums and maximums to further reduce testing. Experimental results indicate a worst-case collision detection time for two one thousand faced objects is approximately three seconds per trajectory step.

Abstract. A number of nonlinear models have recently been proposed for simulating soil carbon decomposition. Their predictions of soil carbon responses to fresh litter input and warming differ significantly from conventional linear models. Using both stability analysis and numerical simulations, we showed that two of those nonlinear models (a two-pool model and a three-pool model) exhibit damped oscillatory responses to small perturbations. Stability analysis showed the frequency of oscillation is proportional to √(ϵ−1−1) Ks/Vs in the two-pool model, and to √(ϵ−1−1) Kl/Vl in the three-pool model, where ϵ is microbial growth efficiency, Ks and Kl are the half saturation constants of soil and litter carbon, respectively, and /Vs and /Vl are the maximal rates of carbon decomposition per unit of microbial biomass for soil and litter carbon, respectively. For both models, the oscillation has a period of between 5 and 15 years depending on other parameter values, and has smaller amplitude at soil temperatures between 0 and 15 °C. In addition, the equilibrium pool sizes of litter or soil carbon are insensitive to carbon inputs in the nonlinear model, but are proportional to carbon input in the conventional linear model. Under warming, the microbial biomass and litter carbon pools simulated by the nonlinear models can increase or decrease, depending whether ϵ varies with temperature. In contrast, the conventional linear models always simulate a decrease in both microbial and litter carbon pools with warming. Based on the evidence available, we concluded that the oscillatory behavior and insensitivity of soil carbon to carbon input are notable features in these nonlinear models that are somewhat unrealistic. We recommend that a better model for capturing the soil carbon dynamics over decadal to centennial timescales would combine the sensitivity of the conventional models to carbon influx with the flexible response to warming of the nonlinear model.

Microscale dynamic simulations can require significant computational resources to generate desired time evolutions. Microscale phenomena are often driven by even smaller scale dynamics, requiring multiscale system definitions to combine these effects. At the smallest scale, large active forces lead to large resultant accelerations, requiring small integration time steps to fully capture the motion and dictating the integration time for the entire model. Multiscale modeling techniques aim to reduce this computational cost, often by separating the system into subsystems or coarse graining to simplify calculations. A multiscale method has been previously shown to greatly reduce the time required to simulate systems in the continuum regime while generating equivalent time histories. This method identifies a portion of the active and dissipative forces that cancel and contribute little to the overall motion. The forces are then scaled to eliminate these noncontributing portions. This work extends that method to include an adaptive scaling method for forces that have large changes in magnitude across the time history. Results show that the adaptive formulation generates time histories similar to those of the unscaled truth model. Computation time reduction is consistent with the existing method.

In this paper a nonlinear model for defects in rolling element bearings is developed. Detailed nonlinear models are useful to detect, estimate and predict failure in rotating machines. Also, accurate modeling of the defect provides parameters that can be estimated to determine the health of the machine. In this paper the rotor-bearing system is modeled as a rigid rotor and the defects are modeled as pits in the bearing race. Unlike the previous models, the motion of the rolling element thorough the defect is not modeled as a predetermined function; instead, it is dynamically determined since it depends on the clearance and the position of the shaft. Using this nonlinear model, the motion of the shaft is simulated and the effect of the rolling element passing through the defect is studied. The effect of shaft parameters and the defect parameters on the precision of the shaft and the overall performance of the system is studied. Finally, suitable measures for health monitoring and defect tracking are suggested.

Thermal effect in elastohydrodynamic lubrication has been the subject of extensive research for several decades. The focus of this study was primarily on the development of an efficient numerical scheme to deal with the computational challenges involved in the solution of thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication model; however, some important aspects related to the accurate description of lubricant properties such as viscosity, rheology, and thermal conductivity in elastohydrodynamic lubrication point contact analysis remain largely neglected. A few studies available in this regard are based upon highly complex mathematical models difficult to formulate and execute. The end-users may not have the specialized skill, knowledge, and time required for the development of computational codes pertaining to these models. Therefore, this paper offers a very simple approach to determine the distribution of mean fluid temperature within an elastohydrodynamic lubrication film. While it is an approximate method, it yields reasonably accurate results with only a little increase in computation time with respect to the isothermal case. Moreover, it can be added as a small module to any existing isothermal algorithm. Using this simplified thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication model for point contacts, this work sheds some light on the importance of accurate characterization of the lubricant properties and demonstrates that the computed thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication characteristics are highly sensitive to lubricant properties. It also emphasizes the use of appropriate mathematical models with experimentally determined parameters to account for the correct lubricant behavior.

We propose a method that approximates any nonlinear model, without regard to complexity, by minimizing its distance from a rich model set. The method produces, potentially through an automated procedure, the approximation of the nonlinear dynamics in the form of a finite expansion associated with certain basis functions and provides an upper bound on the approximation error.
