In recent years, Japanese companies are focusing on enhancing the knowledge creative activities of office workers, and the way of working in the office is shifting from the conventional divisional routine work to collaborative and creative work. On the other hand, office spaces are becoming quiet, and the number of extremely quiet them with noise levels below 40 dB is increasing. Previous studies have reported that a sound environment that is too quiet gives the worker the impression that it is difficult to have a conversation, further accumulation of research results is desired for the construction of a sound environment that enhances knowledge creative activities. Therefore, in this study, focusing on the relationship between sound environment and intellectual productivity, we investigated a sound environment suitable for knowledge creation activities by multiple people. Psychoacoustic experiments were conducted to examine the effects of sound pressure level (signal-to-noise ratio), type of sound and reverberation time of meeting room on the impression of "good conversation". Furthermore, using the psychological evaluation data of the experimental participants, the causal model of psychological evaluation of "good conversation" was examined by multiple regression analysis, and the psychological factors that contribute to the impression of it was clarified.

A soundscape is a sound environment of the awareness of auditory perception and social or cultural understandings. Based on a soundscape investigation in 2019 in the historical and ethnic village of Dong Nationality in Zhaoxing County, Guizhou Province of China, a case study on the soundscape analysis with the acoustical sound pressure level and an impressive sound event or soundmark is introduced in this paper. Furthermore, in order to determine the subjective soundscape experience and its influence by the length of background music listening, the independent variable “Length of Listening” and six adjective pairs, such as “Monotonous” to “Rich”, “Clamorous” to “Quiet”, “Stressing” to “Relaxing”, “Boring” to “Vivid”, “Noisy” to “Musical” and “Disliked” to “Preferable” are chosen to obtain a curve-fit, which shows that the length of the music listening background has a higher correlation to the subjective experience, and no sufficient attention has been paid to the context of the traditional soundscape preservation, ethnic music and quiet and soft ambient sounds.

The subjective strength of a percept often depends on the stimulus intensity in a nonlinear way. Such coding is often reflected by the observation that the just-noticeable difference between two stimulus intensities (JND) is proportional to the absolute stimulus intensity. This behaviour, which is usually referred to as Weber's Law, can be interpreted as a compressive nonlinearity extending the operating range of a sensory system. When the noise superimposed on a motion stimulus is increased along a logarithmic scale (in order to provide linear steps in subjective difference) in motion-coherency measurements, observers often report that the subjective differences between the various noise levels increase together with the absolute level. This observation could indicate a deviation from Weber's Law for variation of motion strength as obtained by changing the signal-to-noise ratio in random-dot kinematograms. Thus JNDs were measured for the superposition of uncorrelated random-dot patterns on static random-dot patterns and three types of motion stimuli realised as random-dot kinematograms, namely large-field and object ‘Fourier’ motion (all or a group of dots move coherently), ‘drift-balanced’ motion (a travelling region of static dots), and paradoxical ‘theta’ motion (the dots on the surface of an object move in opposite direction to the object itself). For all classes of stimuli, the JNDs when expressed as differences in signal-to-noise ratio turned out to increase with the signal-to-noise ratio, whereas the JNDs given as percentage of superimposed noise appear to be similar for all tested noise levels. Thus motion perception is in accordance with Weber's Law when the signal-to-noise ratio is regarded as stimulus intensity, which in turn appears to be coded in a nonlinear fashion. In general the Weber fractions are very large, indicating a poor differential sensitivity in signal-to-noise measurements.

China is in a critical period of urbanization, and various social contradictions continue to be accumulated, emerged and enlarged, so public crisis management mechanism has been highly valued by governments at all levels with the public crisis events are occurred frequently. The paper conducts study for the problems in the current urban public crisis handle mechanism. First, the evaluation model of crisis management can be researched, and crisis management can be divided into four stages to evaluate respectively, they are Reduction, Readiness, Response and Recovery; then, we should research crisis prediction model to strengthen prediction, prevention and monitoring of the crisis before the crisis happened; finally, stakeholders analysis model should be studied, and scientific analyzing the interests of the various stakeholders and the relationship among them. From the theoretical point of view, the paper carries on a study for crisis handle mechanism to provide support for improving the crisis handle level.

PurposeThis paper proposes an evaluation model for prefabricated construction to guide a supply chain with controllable costs. Prefabricated construction is prevalent due to area limitations. Nevertheless, the development is limited by budget control and identifying the factors affecting cost. The degree of close collaboration in the supply chain is closely interconnected with cost performance that includes direct and indirect factors. This paper not only quantizes these factors but also distinguishes the degree of influence of various factors.Design/methodology/approachSystem dynamics is applied to simulate and analyze the construction cost factors through Vensim software. It can also clarify the relationship between cost and other influencing factors. The input data are collected from an Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled system under a Building Information Modeling (BIM) system and Hong Kong government reports.FindingsSimulation results indicate that prefabricated construction cost is mainly influenced by government promotion degree (GPD), working pressure from on-site construction (WPOSC), prefab quality (PQ), load-bearing capacity per vehicle (LBPV) and mold quality (MQ). However, it is more sensitive toward GPD, which indicates that the government should take measures to promote this construction technology. On-site worker management is also essential for the assembly process and indirectly influences the construction cost.Research limitations/implicationsThis paper quantifies indirect influential factors to clarify the specific features for prefabricated construction. The investigated factors are limited.Practical implicationsThe contractor can identify all factors and classify the levels of influence to make decisions under the supply chain system boundary.Social implicationsThe input data are collected from an IoT-enabled system under a BIM system and Hong Kong government reports. Thus, the relationship between construction cost influential factors can be investigated.Originality/valueThis paper quantifies indirect influencing factors and clarifies the specific features in prefabricated construction. The contractor could identify these factors to make decisions and classify the levels of influence under the supply chain system boundary.

With the rapid economic development and the highlighting environmental issues, more attention has been paid to ecosystem health and ecological safety. Along with the development of the concept of sustainable development, people gradually realized the importance of natural ecosystems. Ecological safety is the basis of sustainable development. It is a necessary condition to build a harmonious and environment friendly society. A healthy ecosystem is the basic guarantee of the realization of human social and economic development. This paper analyzes the relationship between ecosystem health and ecological safety, and finds that there are many connections and differences between them.According to the comparison of indices in the same evaluation model, the differences are analyzed. The paper helps to avoid the confusion between this two terms, and aims to make the goal of environmental management clear.

This study investigates the relationship between extrinsic, intrinsic and social rewards, and the organizational commitment of 6,911 employees who work for 13 Japanese companies in Thailand. Hierarchical regression analysis revealed that variables included to measure extrinsic, social and intrinsic rewards were strongly related to organizational commitment. These findings suggest that the antecedents of organizational commitment in the Japanese companies in Thailand are different from those in the other kind of corporations in the West. The comparison between University graduates and others showed that benefit satisfaction and fatigue had stronger and supervisor support and role clarity had weaker influence on organizational commitment in university graduates than in others. Discussions and implications concerning human resource management of Japanese companies in Thailand are offered.

The environmental noise level measurement in Dharan and Inaruwa cities of eastern Nepal were conducted and compared with the ambient noise standards provided by Government of Nepal. The noise pollution assessment was performed in autumn and winter seasons by the indicator average day time sound pressure level (Ld, during 7.00 to 22.00 hrs) and average night time sound pressure level (Ln, during 22.00 to 7.00 hrs). The Ld and Ln values at the commercial, silence and residential zones of Dharan were 78 to 82 and 72 to 73, 65 to 73 and 60 to 70, 65 to 76 and 62 to 64 dB(A) in autumn and 78 to 79 and 72 to 76, 64 to 71 and 58 to 68, 63 to 74 and 60 to 62 dB(A) in winter, respectively whereas for Inaruwa, measurement were 75 to 77 and 73 to 75, 59 and 57, 67 and 60 dB(A) in autumn and 66 to 70 and 63 to 68, 55 and 53, 65 and 58 dB(A) in winter, respectively. The results showed that noise levels exceeded the standard value at most of the sites.

The study assessed a mobile electroencephalography system with water-based electrodes for its applicability in cognitive and behavioural neuroscience. It was compared to a standard gel-based wired system. Electroencephalography was recorded on two occasions (first with gel-based, then water-based system) as participants completed the flanker task. Technical and practical considerations for the application of the water-based system are reported based on participant and experimenter experiences. Empirical comparisons focused on electroencephalography data noise levels, frequency power across four bands (theta, alpha, low beta and high beta) and event-related components (P300 and ERN). The water-based system registered more noise compared to the gel-based system which resulted in increased loss of data during artefact rejection. Signal-to-noise ratio was significantly lower for the water-based system in the parietal channels which affected the observed parietal beta power. It also led to a shift in topography of the maximal P300 activity from parietal to frontal regions. The water-based system may be prone to slow drift noise which may affect the reliability and consistency of low-frequency band analyses. Practical considerations for the use of water-based electrode electroencephalography systems are provided.

1. The metabolic costs of calling for male Requena verticalis Walker (Tettigoniidae: Listroscelidinae) were measured by direct recordings of oxygen consumption. The acoustic power output was measured by sound pressure levels around the calling bushcricket. 2. The average metabolic cost of calling was 0.143 ml g-1 h-1 but depended on calling rate. The net metabolic cost of calling per unit call, the syllable, was calculated to be 4.34×10-6+/−8.3×10-7 ml O2 syllable-1 g-1 body mass (s.e.) from the slope of the relationship between total V(dot)O2 and rate of syllable production. The resting V(dot)O2, calculated as the intercept of the relationship, was 0.248 ml O2 g-1 body mass h-1. 3. The energetic cost of calling for R. verticalis (average mass 0.37 g) was estimated at 31.85×10-6 J syllable-1. 4. Sound pressure levels were measured around calling insects. The surface area of a sphere of uniform sound pressure level [83 dB SPL root mean square (RMS) acoustic power] obtained by these measurements was used to calculate acoustic power. This was 0.20 mW. 5. The metabolic efficiency of calling, based on total metabolic energy utilisation, was 6.4 %. However, we propose that the mechanical efficiency for acoustic transmission is closer to 57 %, since only about 10 % of muscle metabolic energy is apparently available for sound production. 6. R. verticalis emits chirps formed of several syllables within which are discrete sound pulses. Wing stroke rates, when the insect is calling at its maximal rate, were approximately 583 min-1. This is slow compared to the rates observed in conehead tettigoniids, the only other group of bushcrickets where metabolic costs have been measured. The thoracic temperatures of males that had been calling for 5 min were not significantly different from those of non-calling males. 7. For R. verticalis, calling with relatively slow syllable rates may reduce the total cost of calling, and this may be a compensatory mechanism for their other high energetic cost of mating (a large spermatophylax).

Abstract Generator noise is one of the primary concerns in generator designs. The most cost-effective way to deal with the noise issue is to incorporate the reduction of sound pressure level in an early design stage. Once a generator is manufactured, it is often expensive to modify the design for reducing noise levels. For old generators with high sound pressure levels, an effective method to lower the generator noise exposure is to employ acoustic blankets wrapped on the generator external surfaces. However, with the application of acoustic blankets, heat transfer through generator walls can be greatly reduced, leading to the higher generator core temperature and higher generator cooling load. This paper has addressed the design of generator acoustic blankets and its impact on generator cooling performance. The analysis has shown that the influence of acoustic blankets on the generator thermal performance is low or moderate. This suggests that the current acoustic blanket design is feasible. Results from this study have been used to optimize the blanket design.
