Abstract Purpose of the study. The aim was to study in the patients with long-term consequences after cerebral contusion the intensity of spontaneous and H2O2-induced chemiluminescence in order to evaluate the early fast-flowing reactions caused by oxidative stress and associated with the formation of primary radicals such as free radical oxidations. Materials and Methods. Forty-two patients with long-term consequences after cerebral contusion were investigated (39,04 ± 12,84 years mean age; mean onset years 32,56 ± 6,4) where both spontaneous and H2O2-induced chemiluminescences were measured directly by HPLC-chemiluminescence assay. Results. The study have showed that sera of the investigated patients with long-term consequences after cerebral contusion have the increased H2O2-induced chemiluminescence associated with the high amplitude of «fast» burst and the tendency to increase of spontaneous chemiluminescence (p = 0,039 and p = 0,58, accordingly). Thus, the patients with long-term consequences after cerebral contusion showed the abnormal high kinetics of H2O2-induced chemiluminescence (p < 0,05). The statistically significant increase serum Н2О2-induced chemiluminescence intensity detected in examined patients (3085,6 ± 114,2 vs 669,1 ± 214,83 controls) have showed the development of certain oxidative stress processes in this category of patients associated with the increasing of primary free radical reactions and their activity were getting increased with the progression of the disease duration (p < 0,05). Conclusions. The study provides the novel data revealing the increased kinetics of H2O2-induced chemiluminescence in the patients with long-term consequences after cerebral contusion accompanied by the tendency to increase of spontaneous chemiluminescence that may play the certain pathogenetic role. In 2019, the world experienced a global public health concern when the novel coronavirus originated from China and affected around fifty-seven thousand people around the world by March 2020. The quick rise in the number of cases and the death toll overwhelmed the scientific and medical community. While all the focus was driven towards finding the epidemiology, the treatment and the management, the mental health aspect of the quarantine was being overlooked. The purpose of this review is to create awareness about the long-term consequences of quarantine, with the focus on the elderly community in Pakistan.

ABSTRACT Numerous industrial bacteria generate hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which may inhibit the growth of other bacteria in mixed ecosystems. We isolated spontaneous oxidative-stress-resistant (SpOx) Lactococcus lactis mutants by using a natural selection method with milk-adapted strains on dairy culture medium containing H2O2. Three SpOx mutants displayed greater H2O2 resistance. One of them, SpOx3, demonstrated better behavior in different oxidative-stress situations: (i) higher long-term survival upon aeration in LM17 and milk and (ii) the ability to grow with H2O2-producing Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. delbrueckii strains. Furthermore, the transit kinetics of the SpOx3 mutant in the digestive tract of a human flora-associated mouse model was not affected.

So far, the studies that experimentally investigated the consequences of maternal THs focused on short-term effects, while early organisational effects with long-term consequences, as shown for other prenatal hormones, could also be expected. In this study, we aimed at investigating both the short- and long-term effects of prenatal THs in a bird species, the Japanese quail Coturnix japonica. We experimentally elevated yolk TH content (the prohormone T4, and its active metabolite T3, as well as a combination of both hormones). We analysed hatching success, embryonic development, offspring growth and oxidative stress as well as their potential organisational effects on reproduction, moult, and oxidative stress in adulthood. We found that eggs injected with both hormones had a higher hatching success compared with control eggs, suggesting conversion of T4 into T3 by the embryo. We detected no other clear short-term or long-term effects of yolk THs. These results suggest that yolk thyroid hormones are important in the embryonic stage of precocial birds, but other short- and long-term consequences remain unclear. Research on maternal thyroid hormones will greatly benefit from studies investigating how embryos use and respond to this maternal signalling. Long-term studies on prenatal THs in other taxa in the wild are needed for a better understanding of this hormone-mediated maternal pathway.

The term “long COVID-19” describes the long-term effects of the novel coronavirus infection COVID-19. Patients with severe COVID-19 who require hospitalization, as well as those who are on outpatient treatment with mild clinical forms of the disease, often report persistent fatigue, shortness of breath, pain, cough and other respiratory and extrapulmonary symptoms for weeks and months. The generally accepted time frame that separates the duration of the acute and subacute phase of infection from the long COVID-19 is 28 days. The article describes the duration and the course of clinical disorders caused by COVID-19 and their persisting after the end of the acute phase of the disease. In addition, the current understanding of the causes of long-term consequences and the possibilities of drug and non-pharmacological correction are presented.

Intracortical microelectrodes are valuable tools used to study and treat neurological diseases. Due in large part to the oxidative stress and inflammatory response occurring after electrode implantation, the signal quality of these electrodes decreases over time. To alleviate this response, resveratrol, a natural antioxidant which elicits neuroprotective effects through reduction of oxidative stress, was utilized. This work compares traditional systemic delivery of resveratrol to the novel cyclodextrin polymer (pCD) local delivery approach presented herein, both in vitro and in vivo. The pCD displayed an extended resveratrol release for 100 days, as well as 60 days of free radical scavenging activity in vitro. In vivo results indicated that our pCD delivery system successfully delivered resveratrol to the brain with a sustained release for the entire short-duration study (up to 7 days). Interestingly, significantly greater concentrations of resveratrol metabolites were found at the intracortical probe implantation site compared to the systemic administration of resveratrol. Together, our pilot results provide support for the possibility of improving the delivery of resveratrol in an attempt to stabilize long-term neural interfacing applications.

Edaravone is the first free radical scavenger which approved clinically and has an ability to decrease the level of free radicals in cells. Edaravone is a strong antioxidant, which can protect different cells (e.g. endothelial cells) against damage by ROS by inhibiting the lipoxygenase metabolism of arachidonic acid, by trapping hydroxyl radicals, by increasing prostacyclin production, by inhibiting alloxan-induced lipid peroxidation, etc. Because of that, Edaravone is used in treatment of diseases which are associated with oxidative stress. During adolescence, physical activity (PA) decreases with potentially serious, long-term consequences for physical and mental health. Although barriers have been identified as an important PA correlate in adults, research on adolescents’ PA barriers is lacking. Thus reliable, valid scales to measure adolescents’ PA barriers are needed. We present two studies describing a broad range of PA barriers relevant to adolescents with a multidimensional approach. In Study 1, 124 adolescents (age range = 12 – 24 years) reported their most important PA barriers. Two independent coders categorized those barriers. The most frequent PA barriers were incorporated in a multidimensional questionnaire. In Study 2, 598 adolescents (age range = 13 – 21 years) completed this questionnaire and reported their current PA, intention, self-efficacy, and negative outcome expectations. Seven PA barrier dimensions (leisure activities, lack of motivation, screen-based sedentary behavior, depressed mood, physical health, school workload, and preconditions) were confirmed in factor analyses. A multidimensional approach to measuring PA barriers in adolescents is reliable and valid. The current studies provide the basis for developing individually tailored interventions to increase PA in adolescents.
