The purpose of this study was to determine the place and role of sexual disorders in representatives of different sexes and ages in the development of background for cerebral stroke pathology and the formation of the clinical picture of acute stroke period and its consequences. Questions of intimate life of 111 patients (58 men and 53 women) in the periods preceding a stroke were considered in detail and possible connections with clinical features of an acute period of in-Soult were defined. In 77 of these 111 patients, we studied the dynamics of sexual disorders in connection with the features of a functional defect that formed 3-24 months after a stroke. It was revealed that the decrease in sexual activity before the stroke has a distinct significance along with age in the development of background for insulin pathology and in the formation of the consequences of stroke. In the elderly, the most severe functional consequences of stroke were formed in 8,3 % in the presence of normal sexual relations in the period preceding the stroke and in 27,6 % in the absence of such. Negative dynamics of sexual activity after a stroke was detected in 46,8 % of cases, mainly among the elderly, and is associated in women with the presence and severity of neurological deficits, in men-with the presence of cerebral atrophic changes.

Objective : To identify references on the main sexuality characteristics of people aged 60 or over . Method: An analysis of the contents of published articles was carried out in Cuban and foreign scientifi publications from the year 2000 and onward. Information was obtained from Yearbooks, International Conference Reports and works considered as classical in the subject. Results : Population ageing and sexuality are not properly considered by health systems. There are only a few references that explore sexuality in the elderly and his aspirations, feelings, and ways of thinking on his healthcare and, more specifially, sexuality needs. Intimacy within an elderly couple is generally disregarded from the social and family points of view. Conclusions : The assessment of sexual activity in the elderly lacks a multidisciplinary approach since most of the predominating criteria are permeated by cultural inflences, taboos, myths and habits that negatively inflence it. Evidence points out to the existence of sexual activity and dysfunctions among the elderly, which indicates the need for a healthcare staf that has is properly trained for approaching any issue related to this activity of life. The determining role of the health sector in this fild as coordinator of all the sectors and actors related to human sexuality and the ageing process, is not fully appreciated

Abstract. Prospective Memory (PM; i.e., the ability to remember to perform planned tasks) represents a key proxy of healthy aging, as it relates to older adults’ everyday functioning, autonomy, and personal well-being. The current review illustrates how PM performance develops across the lifespan and how multiple cognitive and non-cognitive factors influence this trajectory. Further, a new, integrative framework is presented, detailing how those processes interplay in retrieving and executing delayed intentions. Specifically, while most previous models have focused on memory processes, the present model focuses on the role of executive functioning in PM and its development across the lifespan. Finally, a practical outlook is presented, suggesting how the current knowledge can be applied in geriatrics and geropsychology to promote healthy aging by maintaining prospective abilities in the elderly.

For many with heart failure, including the elderly and those with a preserved ejection fraction, both risk stratification and treatment are challenging. For these large populations and others there is increasing recognition of the role of cardiac fibrosis in the pathophysiology of heart failure. Galectin-3 is a novel biomarker of fibrosis and cardiac remodelling that represents an intriguing link between inflammation and fibrosis. In this article we review the biology of galectin-3, recent clinical research and its application in the management of heart failure patients.

Our spatial mental representations allow us to give refined descriptions of the environment in terms of the relative locations and distances between objects and landmarks. In this study, we investigated the effects of familiarity with the everyday environment, in terms of frequency of exploration and mode of transportation, on categorical and coordinate spatial relations, on young and elderly participants, controlling for socio-demographic factors. Participants were tested with a general anamnesis, a neuropsychological assessment, measures of explorations and the Landmark Positioning on a Map task. The results showed: (a) a modest difference in performance with categorical spatial relations; (b) a larger difference in coordinate spatial relations; (c) a significant moderating effect of age on the relationship between familiarity and spatial relations, with a stronger relation among the elderly than the young. Ceteris paribus, the role of direct experience with exploring their hometown on spatial mental representations appeared to be more important in the elderly than in the young. This advantage appears to make the elderly wiser and likely protects them from the detrimental effects of aging on spatial mental representations.
