Observing new concepts in information technology, we pay attention to its impact on more effective supporting human and organisational knowledge. Knowledge management (KM) is one of such promising and intriguing concepts. Its goals and infrastructures are defined in different ways, therefore interdisciplinary approach seems to be useful. We have presented a short survey of theoretical concepts in management, marketing and decision theory, which were adapted by the theory of KM. On the other hand, knowledge validation (KV), defined as two procedures: verification and evaluation any form of knowledge, is aimed on assuring its quality. The paper discusses the crucial interrelationships between knowledge validation and management. The main goal of this work is positioning KV activities in the context of knowledge management process, emphasising usability of KV techniques during the whole process.

Boolean algebra, minimization of Boolean expressions, and logic gates are often included as subjects in electronics, computer science, information technology, and engineering courses as computer hardware and digital systems are a fundamental component of IT systems today. We believe that students learn minimization of Boolean expressions better if they are given interactive practical learning activities that illustrate theoretical concepts. This chapter describes the development and use of a software tool (named LOGIC-Minimiser) as an aid to enhance teaching and learning minimization of Boolean expressions.

Rising political polarization in recent decades has hampered and gridlocked policymaking, as well as weakened trust in democratic institutions. These developments have been linked to the idea that new media technology fosters extreme views and political conflict by facilitating self-segregation into “echo chambers” where opinions are isolated and reinforced. This opinion-centered picture has recently been challenged by an emerging political science literature on “affective polarization”, which suggests that current polarization is better understood as driven by partisanship emerging as a strong social identity. Through this lens, politics has become a question of competing social groups rather than differences in policy position. Contrary to the opinion-centered view, this identity-centered perspective has not been subject to dynamical formal modeling, which generally permits hypotheses about micro-level explanations for macro-level phenomena to be systematically tested and explored. We here propose a formal model that links new information technology to affective polarization via social psychological mechanisms of social identity. Our results suggest that new information technology catalyzes affective polarization by lowering search and interaction costs, which shifts the balance between centrifugal and centripetal forces of social identity. We find that the macro-dynamics of social identity is characterized by two stable regimes on the societal level: one fluid regime, in which identities are weak and social connections heterogeneous, and one solid regime in which identities are strong and groups homogeneous. We also find evidence of hysteresis, meaning that a transition into a fragmented state is not readily reversed by again increasing those costs. This suggests that, due to systemic feedback effects, if polarization passes certain tipping points, we may experience run-away political polarization that is highly difficult to reverse.

AbstractLiteracy is no longer single entity; there are several aspects of literacies, especially in the era of information technology and digital media today, so it is called multiliteracies. This article presents the results of research on multiliteracies practice products in the form of Islamic boarding school (pesantren) website. Applying the theoretical framework of the new literacy study approach, this research focuses on the context, patron, or sponsorship of multiliteracy practices, and santri responses through it. Data were collected through textual analysis, interviews, and observations at the Nuris Pesantren in Jember. The results showed that patrons of the pesantren multiliteracies practice that produced website were the kiai and the sons of the kiai. Literacy patrons or sponsors always color the content and cultivation of any web or multiliteracies product. Kiai pesantren holds positions as patron and sponsor of pesantren-based multiliteracy practices in the age of digital media technology. The kiai’s vision and thought have an influence on the practice and products of pesantren multiliteracies. The kiai serves as a model (patron) of literacy as well as a sponsor (supporting element) of multiliteracy practices. The kiai remains a “filter” of values for the santri and the community in the digital era.

Education informatization has become a significant symbol of educational modernization. Over the past 20 years, China has made remarkable achievements in the development of information technology infrastructure, resources, and personnel training. Despite the initial success on the education informatization management, China is still facing many challenges in primary and secondary schools’ education informatization: ineffective digital educational resource sharing mechanism (lack of public information technology service platform), insufficient quality education resources (i.e., campus network infrastructure and teachers’ information technology capabilities), poorly integrated education informationalized system management (i.e., slow deployment and limited functionality), insufficient information capabilities training for the teacher, imbalanced development in regional education informatization (i.e., funding shortage in rural areas), and lack of sustainable development policies. Thus, how to resolve these challenges and to prepare primary and secondary schools for the 21st century classroom has become an urgent issue in reaching China’s ambitious goal of 100% network connection. By examining the current status of education informationalized development in three different economic areas in China, this chapter collects, complies, compares, and evaluates the application and development of regional education informatization including information technology hardware, informational network, information capabilities, and education informatization development funds in primary and secondary schools. Recommendations are made to improve the process of education informatization development and application; to reduce the regional gaps in education informatization; to accelerate the development of network resources, network infrastructure, and informationalized platform; to improve information technology capability training; and to establish better policies for sustainable development of education informatization in China.
