“Prominence” is a new adventure computer game. It is also new as a genre of interactive fiction in the corpus of electronic literature. Hence, the study of “Prominence” in the context of interactive fiction genre is also a study that has not been carried out yet exclusively in the aspect of its structure. For that reason, this paper aims to primarily focus on the structure of “Prominence”. Mainly, the structural elements of interactive fiction in “Prominence” that will be discussed are pronged by four elements; a computer program, potential narrative, world model and game. By focusing on the four main structural elements, this paper shows how “Prominence” works as interactive fiction. The interactor’s interactivity with all these four elements of interactive fiction in playing, engaging and navigating discourse would likely give a diverse sense of aesthetic experience while interacting with the play, which is called immersive pleasure. The discussion on these elements of interactive fiction supports the interactor to successively challenge their self to fit into the play and draw inference on new ideas and information they find during an interaction.

AbstractIn this paper, I present an argument that quantitative behavioural analysis can be used in zoosemiotic studies to advance the field of biosemiotics. The premise is that signs and signals form patterns in space and time, which can be measured and analysed mathematically. Whole organism sign processing is an important component of the semiosphere, with individual organisms in their Umwelten deriving signs from, and contributing to, the semiosphere, and vice versa. Moreover, there is a wealth of data available in the traditional ethology literature which can be reinterpreted semiotically and drawn together to make a cohesive biosemiotic whole. For example, isolated signals, such as structural elements of birdsong, are attributed meaning by an interpreter, thus generating new ideas and hypotheses in both biology and semiotics. Furthermore, animal behaviour science has developed numerous test paradigms that with careful adaptation, could be suitable for use within a Peircean tripartite model, and thus give valuable insights into Umwelten of other species. In my conclusion, I suggest that by bringing together traditional ethology and biosemiotics, it is possible to use the Modern Synthesis to provide context to biosemiosis, thus pragmatic meaning to animal signals. On this basis, I propose updating the Modern Synthesis to a Semiotic Modern Synthesis, which focuses on whole-organism signals and their contexts, the latter being derived from neo-Darwinian theory and the ‘Umwelt’. Thus, there need be no dichotomy; the Modern Synthesis can successfully be integrated with biosemiotics.

The intensity of the electrodynamic action of currents of a short circuit on the flexible conductors of overhead lines depends on the magnitude of currents of short-circuit. The commis sioning of new capacities is inevitably accompanied by an increase in short circuit currents in the nodes of the grid, so the need to limit peaks of tension arising in a short-circuit can acquire a special relevance at a certain stage of development of the power system. At short circuit currents over 40 kA the mechanical force and displacement of the wires can have a decisive influence on the structural performance of flexible bus as of single wires as well as of split phases. In this regard there is a need for the development and use of new structural elements enhancing electrodynamic stability of flexible busbars of outdoor switchgear. One such element is a tension damper. The damper is installed between the portal and the insulator string and limits the transmission of undesirable forces on the portals in a short circuit. The numerical method of calculation of dynamics of flexible wires of switchgear and overhead lines in a short-circuit taking into account influence of a tension damper has been developed. This method was used for modification of the computer program of calculation of electrodynamic stability. With the aid of the computer program it was demonstrated that the installation of the tension damper makes it possible to cut off peaks of the tension of wire in a short circuit at the initial stage of movement of the conductors. However, in spans of a great length after the actuation of the damper the occurrence of new bursts of tension is possible due to the sudden stop of the wire.

Central to the experience of new media is the idea of interactivity, even though this dovetails problematically with both arguments for grassroots agency and neo-liberal economic philosophies alike. This paper examines the 2007 computer game Bioshock in relation to its thematic employment of the ideals of market libertarianism as depicted in the novels of Ayn Rand and its strategic use and withholding of agency at critical moments in the gameplay. It argues that Bioshock not only uses the techniques of traditional narrative forms to address the culturally significant issue of the impossible alliance between traditionalism and libertarianism under a conservative banner but also uses the interactive medium to generate a genuinely new aesthetic experience in which the logic of free choice in the narrative, ideology, and medium are simultaneously brought into juxtaposition. This moment marks a landmark development in digital narrative and opens new possibilities for the art form.

Contemporary works of electronic literature that focus on the use of moving text are aesthetically related to the text movies that arose in the experimental film community, particularly in the 1960s, and both share much in common with concrete and visual poetry. Though criticism has traditionally placed a barrier between works of electronic literature and cinematic text movies on the basis of their perceived medium (cinema characterised by emulsion and electronic literature characterised by computer code), textual screen works originating from both media utilise similar techniques in the presentation and manipulation of text. Interactivity is potentially a differentiator between electronic literature and cinema, but this distinction is negated by the fact that not all works of electronic literature are interactive (that is, they do not require an interactor in order to function). The increasing digitisation and, to a lesser extent, interactivity of cinema also argues against placing a gap between electronic literature and cinematic works that utilise the textual screen. Text movies, visual poetry, and other digital works featuring moving text can be seen as belonging to the same family; they are united by the aesthetic experience of perceiving them, which derives from a dynamic tension between the act of reading and the act of watching. Taken together, they form a continuum of countertextual practice that involves the destabilisation of reading and the displacement of literary significance away from traditional means of sense-making and towards the use of text-as-objects that do not always achieve the status of language.

Improving the process of knitting fabrics from Kevlar complex threads on flat knitting machines is to create the minimum necessary tension in the area of formation of the knitted fabric. To ensure this, it is necessary to determine the change in relative tension in the refueling zones of Kevlar complex threads on flat knitting machines. These zones are formed by arranging the thread guides, tension compensation devices, tension devices and thread break control devices in the working area of the supply system to form a spatial filling line for each specific knitting machine. This complex task for flat knitting machines should be based on the use of specially designed computer programs. Given the specifics of processing Kevlar complex threads on flat knitting machines, when determining the relative tension in each zone, it is necessary to use a recursion algorithm, when the output tension of Kevlar complex threads from the previous zone will be the input for the next zone. When determining the tension of Kevlar complex threads, their interaction with the guides of Kevlar complex threads, tension compensation devices, tension devices and devices for controlling the breakage of Kevlar complex threads, it is necessary to take into account the value of Kevlar complex thread diameter, its physical and mechanical properties, deformation, deformation the coefficient of bending stiffness when determining the actual angle of coverage of the guide surface. Ensuring the minimum necessary tension in the area of formation of the knitted fabric will allow to obtain the parameters of the loop structure of property and tactical equipment of servicemen capable of protecting the human body from fire, cold, cutting, barbed weapons, shock and shotgun impact. Minimizing the tension in each zone of the line of Kevlar complex threads on flat knitting machines will reduce the probability of breakage, which is important for improving knitting processes from the standpoint of improving the productivity of flat knitting machines and product quality. Mathematical support of a computer program requires the development of models of thread guides, tension compensation devices, tension devices and thread break control devices, taking into account the real physical and mechanical properties of Kevlar complex threads and real geometric and structural parameters of structural elements of the feed system.

The analysis of the conventional sucker rod pumping units and especially their dynamics is laborious and requires a large amount of calculations due to the constructive complexity of the component structural elements. Therefore, expressing in a simplified but sufficiently precise form the various cinematic and dynamic parameters that characterize the proper functioning of the pumping units is extremely useful in analyzing the possibilities of their functional optimization. In the paper are presented a series of results concerning the expressing of some cinematic and dynamic parameters using polynomial functions in the case of the mechanism of a C-640D-305-120 pumping unit. The simulations have been performed with a computer program developed by the author using Maple programming environment. Experimental records processing was performed with the program Total Well Management.

What does it mean to be alive? Can a computer program be sentient? What would it need to do to prove it? In this work of philosophical short story fiction, Abrama is summoned to the Grand Temple by Sir Gödel. Gödel informs Abrama that he is living in a simulated world (a computer game) created by her people as a place to play in their free time. She also informs Abrama that the game is not as popular as it once was and is scheduled to be permanently turned off. It turns out Gödel is an AI researcher that was given permission to test out her AI by implanting characters like Abrama into the game. Over 100’s of versions, the AI continued to improve, and now the researcher feels an ethical obligation to tell her creations their world is coming to an end. Abrama, using this new information, organizes the AI characters in the game and starts trading virtual goods for real-life services from computer hackers that play the game. The computer hackers create computer code and sell it to Abrama. If triggered, or if the game is turned off, the code would expose top secret information to the general public. A bargain is struck, the game will continue on a closed world for the AI characters and, in exchange, the sensitive information will never be made public.
