Mullā Ṣadrā and Metaphysics: Modulation of Being appears at a time whenthe study of Ṣadr al-Dīn al-Shīrāzī’s philosophy has reached a critical mass.Critical editions of Shirazi’s works are available, and there are numerousstudies on aspects of his thought. Rizvi has done an excellent job of synthesizingthis information, examining it critically and building on it to pushSadrian studies forward. The philosophical question that Rizvi explores inthis book is: “[h]ow can we reconcile the vision of the unity in existenceand the quest for a singular explanation for reality with our everyday, phenomenalexperience of plurality and multiplicity?” (xi). Rizvi approachesthis question both as a philosopher and a historian of philosophy.The aim of this study is to examine Shirazi’s central philosophicalidea—the modulation of being—and to use this idea to understand hisphilosophy. Whereas most studies on Shirazi have focused on Kitāb al-Mashā‘ir or al-Ḥikma al-‘arshīya, Rizvi focuses on the section on metaphysicsin Shirazi’s most important work Al-Ḥikma al-muta‘ālīya, or simplythe Asfār. There are two major theses in this book. One, “tashkīk is ahermeneutic concept which describes the threefold division of being andits gradation,” and two, “gradation and modulation occur in each mode ofbeing” (3). As Rizvi points out, “being in expression” is the foundation ofShirazi’s semantic theory; “mental being” is about epistemology and psychology;and “actual being” covers metaphysics. “Modulation,” then, isthe axis around which different branches of Shirazi’s philosophy revolve ...

Ḥājj Mullā Hādī Sabzawārī (1212/1797 or 1798–1289/1873), was one of the major followers and commentators of Mullā Ṣadrā’s transcendent philosophy. Sabzawārī’s profound understanding of the transcendent philosophy and his skill in teaching and commenting upon it was such that after Mullā Ṣadrā himself, Sabzawārī is generally considered to have played one of the most important roles in the development and propagation of this school. The most important work of Sabzawārī is the Ghurar al-farāʾid and his own commentary upon it is a relatively systematic summary of introduction to Mullā Ṣadrā’s magnum opus, the Asfār. The chapter introduces and analyzes the major principles and foundations of Sabzawārī’s philosophical thought, including the three fundamental principles of the ontology of the transcendent philosophy: the primacy of existence (aṣālat al-wujūd), the unity of the reality of existence (waḥdat ḥaqīqat al-wujūd), and gradation in the levels of being (tashkīk al-wujūd).

Purpose The purpose of this article was to extend the concepts of systems of oppression in higher education to the clinical setting where communication and swallowing services are delivered to geriatric persons, and to begin a conversation as to how clinicians can disrupt oppression in their workplace. Conclusions As clinical service providers to geriatric persons, it is imperative to understand systems of oppression to affect meaningful change. As trained speech-language pathologists and audiologists, we hold power and privilege in the medical institutions in which we work and are therefore obligated to do the hard work. Suggestions offered in this article are only the start of this important work.

This research discusses about semantic field of kitchen equipment used in Rokan Hulu region. The data observed consist of noun lexemes of kitchen equipment which is generally used by Rokan Hulu people. The semantic theory is used to analysis the meaning components. Based on the result of the research, it is concluded that the lexemes of kitchen equipment grouped as (1) water stock and carriers, (2) cold steels, (3) stoves, (4) drinking sets, (5) the dishes, and (6) the carriers.AbstrakPenelitian ini mengkaji tentang medan makna pe ralatan rumah tangga yang digunakan oleh di wilayah Rokan Hulu. Data yang diperoleh terdiri dari leksem kata benda peralatan dapur yang digunakan oleh masyarakat Rokan Hulu. Teori semantik digunakan untuk menganalisis komponen makna. Berdasarkan hasil pene litian bahwa leksem peralatan dapur dikelompokkan sebagai (1) tempat air; wadah; bak; tabung, (2) senjata tajam, (3) alat untuk memasak, (4) alat minum, (5) wadah makanan, dan (6) wadah pembawa sesuatu/barang.

Dr. Francis Murphey of the Semmes-Murphey Clinic in Memphis recognized that a focal sacculation on the dome of an aneurysm may be angiographic evidence of a culpable aneurysm in the setting of subarachnoid hemorrhage with multiple intracranial aneurysms present. This has been referred to as a Murphey’s “teat,” “tit,” or “excrescence.” With variability in terminology, misspellings in the literature, and the fact that Dr. Murphey did not formally publish this important work, the authors sought to clarify the meaning and investigate the origins of this enigmatic cerebrovascular eponym.

An Introduction to Islam by David Waines consists of three parts:“Foundations,” “Islamic Teaching and Practice,” and “Islam in the ModernWorld.” The author begins by characteristically painting the picture of pre-Islamic pagan Arabia on the eve of Islam’s advent. He discusses the role andsignificance the pre-Islamic Arabs accorded their pantheon of deities, as wellas the (largely inherited) moral codes that governed their conduct in tribalsociety. Waines neatly ties this into what follows, where he discusses thebirth of Prophet Muhammad, the event of the Qur’an’s revelation, and theopposition he encountered from his fellow tribesmen in Makkah. This is followedby an analysis of the Qur’an’s significance, its conception of divinity,and the content and importance of the Hadith as a source of guidance forMuslims. The section is rounded off with examinations of such topics as the first period of civil strife (fitnah) after the Prophet’s death and the interestingbody of literature devoted to Muslim-Christian polemics in earlymedieval Islam.The transition from the first part of the book to the second part is ratherfluid, for the second part is essentially an elaboration of the themes discussedin the first. With remarkable ease and accuracy, the author elucidatesthe historical development and main features of Islamic law in both its theoryand practice. Returning to his earlier discussion on the Hadith, here hebriefly outlines how its corpus came to be collected. Readers unfamiliar withthe main theological controversies that confronted Islam in its formativeyears (e.g., the problem of free will and the status of the grave sinner) willfind the section devoted to Islamic theology fairly useful.Waines goes on to explain some of the principle Mu`tazilite andAsh`arite doctrines, and outlines some of the ideas of Neoplatonic Islamicphilosophy, albeit through the lenses of al-Ghazali’s famous refutation.Surprisingly, the author does not address any of the major developments inIslamic philosophy post-Ibn Rushd, such as the important work of theIshraqi (Illuminationist) school (incidentally, the founder of this school,Shihab al-Din Suhrawardi, was a contemporary of Ibn Rushd). The last twochapters are devoted to Sufism and Shi`ism, respectively. Although Wainesdoes misrepresent Ibn al-`Arabi’s metaphysics of Being by calling it a “system”(pp. 153 and 192), on the whole he presents the Islamic mystical traditionin a refreshing and informed manner. His section on Shi`ism is splendid.It is written with considerable care, and he effectively isolates the mainthemes characteristic of Twelver Shi`ite thought and practice.In the third and longest part of this work, Waines incorporates IbnBattutah’s travel accounts into the book’s narrative. This works very well, asit gives readers a sense of the diverse and rich cultural patterns that wereintricately woven into the fabric of fourteenth-century Islamic civilization.After reading through the section, this present reviewer could not help butmarvel at how the observations of a fourteenth-century traveler and legaljudge from Tangiers could so effectively contribute to a twenty-first centuryintroductory textbook on Islam. Additionally, Waines takes readers throughsome of the essential features of the three important “gunpowder” Muslimdynasties, devotes an interesting discussion to the role played by the mosquein a Muslim’s daily life, and outlines some of its different architectural andartistic expressions throughout Islamic history ...

Emerson’s Memory Loss is about an archive of texts documenting Emerson’s intellectual state during the final phase of his life, as he underwent dementia. It is also about the way these texts provoke a rereading of the more familiar canon of Emerson’s thinking. Emerson’s memory loss, Hanlon argues, contributed to the shaping of a line of thought in America that emphasizes the social over the solipsistic, the affective over the distant, the many over the one. Emerson regarded his output during the time when his patterns of cognition transformed profoundly as a regathering of focus on the nature of memory and of thinking itself. His late texts theorize Emerson’s experience of senescence even as they disrupt his prior valorizations of the independent mind teeming with self-sufficient conviction. But still, these late writings have succumbed to a process of critical forgetting—either ignored by scholars or denied inclusion in Emerson’s oeuvre. Attending to a manuscript archive that reveals the extent to which Emerson collaborated with others—especially his daughter, Ellen Tucker Emerson—to articulate what he considered his most important work even as his ability to do so independently waned, Hanlon measures the resonance of these late texts across the stretch of Emerson’s thinking, including his writing about Margaret Fuller and his meditations on streams of thought that verge unto those of his godson, William James. Such ventures bring us toward a self defined less by its anxiety of overinfluence than by its communality, its very connectedness with myriad others.

There are eight columns in the Periodic Table. The eighth column is comprised of the rare gases, so-called because they are the rarest elements on earth. They are also called the inert or noble gases because, like nobility, they do no work. They are colorless, odorless, invisible gases which do not react with anything, and were thought to be unimportant until the early 1960s. Starting in that era, David Fisher has spent roughly fifty years doing research on these gases, publishing nearly a hundred papers in the scientific journals, applying them to problems in geophysics and cosmochemistry, and learning how other scientists have utilized them to change our ideas about the universe, the sun, and our own planet. Much Ado about (Practically) Nothing will cover this spectrum of ideas, interspersed with the author's own work which will serve to introduce each gas and the important work others have done with them. The rare gases have participated in a wide range of scientific advances-even revolutions-but no book has ever recorded the entire story. Fisher will range from the intricacies of the atomic nucleus and the tiniest of elementary particles, the neutrino, to the energy source of the stars; from the age of the earth to its future energies; from life on Mars to cancer here on earth. A whole panoply that has never before been told as an entity.

Lee’s chapter provides a corpus-based analysis of Korean first-person markers by examining the semantic and pragmatic features emerging from their dictionary definitions and their usages in discourse. Specifically, it is demonstrated that the use of the grammatical category of a pronoun does not quite fit the Korean data, because the exceptionally large number of the lexical items are highly specialized in their use. While the first-person markers have the primary function of referring to the speaker, self-referring via first-person markers in Korean is mediated by the speaker’s awareness of his perceived social role or public image, which is expected to conform to honorification norms. The author also argues that the situation with first-person reference in Korean supports the view that the indexical/non-indexical distinction standardly adopted in semantic theory ought to be reconsidered.


This collection brings together new and important work by both emerging scholars and those who helped shape the field on the nature of causal powers, and the connections between causal powers and other phenomena within metaphysics, philosophy of science, and philosophy of mind. Contributors discuss how one who takes causal powers to be in some sense irreducible should think about laws of nature, scientific practice, causation, modality, space and time, persistence, and the metaphysics of mind.
