The dominant theme me comes across in Bennabi’s writings is how essentialit is to cultivate ideas. He argued that proficiency and efficacy in nurturingideas is a vital sign of intellectual and cultural development. In elaboratingthe role of ideas in the development of civilization, he went to the extentof saying that a civilization ptospers only by the depth of its guiding ideas.I am in accord with Shaykh Diraz of al Azhar when, writing in his prefaceto Bennabi’s book The Qur’anic Phenomena, he praised him for the =titudeof his judgment, the zeal of his conviction, the precision of his terminology, and the beauty of his style. Apart from their profound intellectual implications, the pronouncements of Bennabi caw deep personal meanings for me.These attributes of Bennabi’s writings make him one of the most eruditeintellectuals of the Muslim world. Moreover, what I discern in these attributesis that they rightly portray him in his totality. To me he is not an intellectualor a recluse, simply captivated by the bliss of his own awakening and withoutan organic link with his faith. Most assuredly, his pen symbolizes his faith, hisconvictions, and his ideological strategy. More than anything else, it serves asa constant reminder of the inevitability of the inner struggle for both personaland collective evolution.Civilizations do not become great, acquire power, or wane by some mysteriousflux of nature. A civilization is the translation of ideas into intellectual capacityand material means to organize one’s environment. Ideas make the practiceof power possible. Ideas devise the practical tools for living in the world. And ideas question whether we have attained our goal or failed our potential.Bennabi tells us that those who do not have the moral courage to grasp theguiding ideas of their civilization have not only the repetition of history buttheir irrelevance to the mamh of time as their future. The Qur’an, the raisond’etre of the ummah, is not a mere invitation; it is the imperative to think and ...

This article provides an overview of the history and current situation of the academic study of Sufism (Islamic mysticism) at American universities. It examines Sufism’s place within the broader curriculum of Islamic studies as well as some of the main themes and approaches employed by American scholars. In addition, it explains both the academic context in which Sufi studies are located and the role of contemporary positions in Islamic and western thought in shaping its academic study.1 Topics and issues of particular interest to a Muslim audience, as well as strictly academic observations, will be raised. In comparison to its role at academic institutions in the traditional Muslim world,2 Sufi studies has played a larger role within the western academic study of Islam during the twentieth century, especially the later decades. I will discuss the numerous reasons for this in the sections on the institutional, intellectual, and pedagogical contexts.

The article is devoted to one of the problems of foreign language education – the definition of the role of interpretation in preparing students of special (language) directions to participate in the dialogue of cultures. Interpretation is considered as a phenomenon and as a way of comprehending reality, which allows the subjects of the dialogue of cultures to reach mutual understanding. The main characteristic of interpretation, which is necessary for the purposes of foreign language education, is its psychological character. It is determined by the psychology of the author, the psychology of the work, as well as the psychology of the reader-interpreter. It is proved that the interpretation of a work of art, which has universal, historical and personal plans, has huge epistemological and axiological possibilities. They activate the entire educational potential of interperetation (educational, developmental, cognitive, and educational). Russian Russian poet A. A. Fet (1820–1892) uses the poem “Wir saßen am Fischerhaus” by the famous German poet and publicist Heinrich Hein (1797–1856) and the translation of this poem into Russian to illustrate the interpretation technology. The poem is considered as a space of personal meanings of the author. They are the ones that are subject to interpretation and bring the reader-interpreter back from the poet's world to the modern real world. And the real world is full of unexpected cultural facts, closely related to the content of the work of G. Heine, with distant Lapland and the life of modern lapps. Thus, interpretation is presented as an educational strategy. Together with the strategies of contextualization, philologization and argumentation, it ensures the achievement of the main goal of foreign language education – the creation of an individual who can act as a genuine subject of the dialogue of cultures. The article also emphasizes the importance of the teacher as the organizer of the educational process and the subject of the dialogue of cultures.

This book examines the role of the papacy and the crusade in the religious life of the late twelfth through late thirteenth centuries and beyond. Throughout the book, the contributors ask several important questions. Was Innocent III more theologian than lawyer-pope and how did his personal experience of earlier crusade campaigns inform his own vigorous promotion of the crusades? How did the outlook and policy of Honorius III differ from that of Innocent III in crucial areas including the promotion of multiple crusades (including the Fifth Crusade and the crusade of William of Montferrat) and how were both pope’s mindsets manifested in writings associated with them? What kind of men did Honorius III and Innocent III select to promote their plans for reform and crusade? How did the laity make their own mark on the crusade through participation in the peace movements which were so crucial to the stability in Europe essential for enabling crusaders to fulfill their vows abroad and through joining in the liturgical processions and prayers deemed essential for divine favor at home and abroad? Further essays explore the commemoration of crusade campaigns through the deliberate construction of physical and literary paths of remembrance. Yet while the enemy was often constructed in a deliberately polarizing fashion, did confessional differences really determine the way in which Latin crusaders and their descendants interacted with the Muslim world or did a more pragmatic position of ‘rough tolerance’ shape mundane activities including trade agreements and treaties?

Technologies of vocational training play an important role in the concept of informal education and they can be implemented as in higher education, and organizational learning. In the modern understanding of education the two sides are emphasized - the communion of each person to the society and the development of individual personality features. If formal education is moving towards these goals systematically and purposefully at certain training sessions, the place and time of informal education is in no way limited. Informal education can be characterized not only by independent, human progress in cultural development, but also directed and projected improvement of professional and personal skills of employees of organizations. The purpose of this papers to examine informal education not only as an independent, but also as a guide and the projected improvement of the professional and personal skills of employees of organizations. The leading approaches to the study of this problem are social-pedagogical and managerial approaches to substantiate the essence of the process and the role of leaders of organizations trained in the management of such education.

Today, I want to look at three interconnected things. The first is the importance of open access and what it really means. The second is the role of Scholarship@Western in supporting our open access journals from the perspective of the International Indigenous Policy Journal (IIPJ). Lastly, we want to talk about some of the actions that we have taken to enhance our journal’s readership and rankings.
