Road transport has become the major source of environmental pollution and it is also one of the biggest environmental risks in the EU countries. Good air quality is very important for population as pollutants have negative impacts on human health. The paper deals with relationship between air pollutants generated by road transport and the life expectancy in EU countries. At the beginning of the paper the main pollutants from motor vehicles are described and impact on human health is summarized too. We use regression analysis of panel data to analyse the relationship between chosen air pollutants and life expectancy. Our results show negative impacts of nitrogen oxide and sulphur oxide, specifically reduction in life expectancy by 1.49 years for nitrogen oxides and 0.28 years for sulphur oxides with an increase of the pollutant by 1%. So according to our findings economic policy makers should focus primarily on the reduction of nitrogen and sulphur oxides.

The impact of implementation of cohesion policy on the sustainable development of EU countries is of great interest and presents a number of actual challenges. This research aims to evaluate the impact and the effects of the cohesion policy among the Member States using hierarchical clustering analysis in order to identify how the selected variables affect the sustainable development adopted models. The variables used in the analysis were selected on the basis of official data provided by the European Commission, SDG Index and Dashboards Reports and the EU Cohesion Monitor. The results of the research have led to the grouping of the 28 Member States in a number of six clusters, identifying performers but also those countries that have a high potential for sustainable development or which require increased attention to be sustained in recovering existing gaps. The results of the study can be a starting point for policy makers and other stakeholders involved in their efforts to support sustainable development through effective and effective policies.

Nearly two-thirds of the emissions that cause smog come from road transport. In April 2019, the European Parliament adopted new regulations on public procurement to encourage investment in clean buses—electric, hydrogen, or gas. Directive 2009/33/EC is to apply from the second half of 2021. The aim of this article is to make an attempt to simulate the number of zero-emission buses (ZEB) in European Union (EU) member countries in two time horizons: 2025 and 2030, and to forecast the number of clean vehicles in the precise time horizons, including before and after 2050. Research questions are as follows: (1) what will be the number of ZEBs in individual EU countries over the next few years; (2) which of the EU countries will reach by 2030 the level of 95% share of ZEBs in all buses, which are a fleet of public transport buses; and (3) in which year will which EU countries reach the level of 95% share of zero-emission buses. The method used is a Bass model. The conducted analyses demonstrate that, by 2050, only four of the EU members will be able to reach 95% level of share of clean buses in the city bus transport fleets. It is likely that other countries may not achieve this even by 2050.

Abstract The present paper discusses a novel methodology based on neural network to determine air pollutants’ correlation with life expectancy in European countries. The models were developed using historical data from the period 1992–2016, for a set of 20 European countries. The subject of the analysis included the input variables of the following air pollutants: sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, particulate matters, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and non-methane volatile organic compounds. Our main findings indicate that all the variables significantly affect life expectancy. Sensitivity of constructed neural networks to pollutants proved to be particularly important in the case of changes in the value of particulate matters, sulphur oxides and non-methane volatile organic compounds. The most frequent association was found for fine particle. Modelled courses of changes in the variable under study coincide with the actual data, which confirms that the proposed models generalize acquired knowledge well.

This research reflects on the impacts of traffic factors, car acceleration, volume of traffic, road gradient and the resulting sum of air pollutants, with a significant impact on the emissions of the vehicles. The general and detailed urban plans are normally addressed to these factors. Such considerations usually determine the adverse effects of motor vehicles, and environmental hazards, such as air pollution and vibration, which affects highways and bridges. However, the effect of road transport and preparation on the ecosystem is described. The research focuses on climate aspects that can be identified and designed so that all generic proposals can include them. In this study, CO, NO2, TVOC’s and SO2 concentration at multiple sampling sites were screened regularly. The study revealed that air pollutant rates are highly correlated with traffic movement and prevailing gradients. The SO2, NO2, CO and TVOC’s concentrations were very much associated to significant road flow parameters such as traffic elevation, intensity and amount of transport.

Air pollution has been a growing concern for decades, which has a serious toxicological impact on human health and the environment. It has a number of different emission sources, but motor vehicles and industrial processes contribute the major part of air pollution. According to the World Health Organization, six major air pollutants include particle pollution, ground-level ozone, carbon monoxide, sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and lead. Air pollution is considered as the major environmental risk factor in the incidence and progression of some diseases such as asthma, lung cancer, ventricular hypertrophy, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, psychological complications, autism, retinopathy, fetal growth, and low birth weight. This article aims to discuss toxicology of major air pollutants, sources of emission, and their impact on human health. According to official statistics, road transport is one of the most dangerous and costly in terms of life and costs of hospitalization and post-accident medication. Thus, safety is a matter of great interest at national level and, perhaps internationally. Road safety on public roads in Romania is low compared to international standards. The mortality rate is more than twice the EU average. Given that road traffic and victim maintenance costs are a real economic problem, a European harmonization of the recording and assessment of events involving the bodily injuries of those involved in road events is necessary. Road events are one of the main causes of mortality in modern society. For this reason, the safety of motor vehicles has become the most important issue in their development. Road traffic injuries are a problem that can be controlled by proper attention to traffic avoidance strategies. Side impact is the second major cause of mortality and injury after frontal impact in road traffic analysis.

The paper contains analyses of life expectancy mainly in the context of its relation to the level of individual’s education. The data was referred to the specific Eurostat researches which take the above mentioned criterion of population’s division into consideration. 14 EU countries (including Poland) and 2 countries, which are not in the EU territory, were included in the research. The project was carried out from 2007 to 2010. The life expectancy of 30‑year‑old individuals was examined, assuming that the first effects of investment in the human capital connected with education are revealed at this age (deliberations were set in the economic theory of the human capital). In this paper, we present a statistical analysis of the main air pollutants and life expectancy in some countries from Eastern Europe: Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia. We use statistical tools to describe and model air pollution data. The data involve a period of 18 years and include the annual average concentrations volatile organic compound, particulate matters, nitrogen oxides (NOX), sulphur oxides (SOX). The descriptive analysis of these variables is presented, before the model of the dependence between them, in order to discover the relationship between them. The correlation and regression analysis allow to find precisely formula of the connections that link life expectancy (LE) and the main air pollutants. The results obtained in this study reveals a new perspective of health and air quality and also, they present a new tool for all national and international agency for arguing that reducing the air pollution is closely related to a long-life expectancy.
