The article is devoted to the connotative reading of proper names (PN) in a literary text. Undoubtedly, among the issues of poetic onomastics it is one of the most complicated and interesting questions. It should be noted that at the present time onomastics itself appears as a rather new direction of a text analysis,it develops along with stylistics, poetics and linguistics. For the analysis of connotative onyms the article presents quite a full generalization of the following issue: whether proper names have or do not have a lexical meaning. The attention is paid to underlining the volumetric informative field in PN, in the structure of which connotation takes a considerable role. The introduction of a special term «connotonym» is convincingly motivated. The article alazies connotative potential of PN in detail and gives its common characteristics. It is underlined that all sorts of onyms have connotation, though in a literary text anthroponyms have a special significance, so a particular attention in the article is given to the connotative filling of anthroponym meanings. It is noted that proper names are always subjectively coloured, they express author’s attitude. Besides, they appear in the text in different forms, realize author’s ulterior sententiae, and assist in describing main characters and their relationship. Theoretical propositions of the article are illustrated by the example of the PNconnotative content analysis: Shaghanae from S.A. Yesenin’s famous cycle «Persian Motifs» and Tanyusha from his poem «Khorosha byla Tanyusha…». The article shows contextual reading of a connotonym and potentialities of the PN connotative reading in a poetic text.

Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) refers to some kind of text analysis, including an analysis of literary language. Some research has verified the study of the literary text using this linguistic apparatus; however the use of SFL in literary text analysis is relatively rare. Therefore, this study investigated the contributions of SFL to literary text analysis. The data of the study were 20 scientific articles focusing on literary text analysis using SFL. The analysis used content analysis to expose the segments of the story analyzed and the components of SFL to analyze them. The findings showed that the method of analysis using SFL on the literary text has brought new perspectives to the researchers, and provided some possible future studies in literary works. Moreover, the study of literary texts is regarded not merely as interpretative practices but as explanatory categories for each segment of a literary text.

The article analyses the cognitive mechanisms of interpretation of the literary text viewed in the context of discourse interaction. As the article shows, being the elements of discourse, the cognitive structures determine the procedures of interpretation of the literary text. Viewed from the cognitive aspect, such interpretation consists in constituting new cognitive images in the reader’s mind on the basis of various discourse markers (scientific terms, syntactic patterns, etc.). The article demonstrates on the material of the English language the role of cognitive scripts, belonging to the scientific worldview, in arranging the plot of the literary text. The phenomenon of interpretation finds its manifestation in filling in the slots of the cognitive script in the process of reading the text. Considering the semantic potential of scientific discourse markers, the author reveals the influence of the scientific worldview on the literary world picture. The analysis of text fragments enables the author to conclude that the study of discourse interaction can prove useful in text analysis as it may help revealing the specificity of an author’s idiostyle and a reader’s interpretation of the text.

Abstract The article, following a suggestion of Barthes, attempts to outline a semiotics of the technique of rhyming considered as a sub-code of poetic language, in order to better understand the important contribution provided by rhyme, on many levels, to the strategies of signification of the literary text. This semiotic approach is inscribed in a general theory of rhyme under development by the author, which aims at explaining the raison d’être and fortune of this poetic device in relation to its decisive contribution to the rhetorical and figurative elaboration of the poetic text. In a semiotic perspective, three fundamental levels of structuring rhyme as a sign can be distinguished: its signifier (the partial phonic identity which, in the current view, is considered to be rhyme’s exhaustive definition), its meaning (the semantic interference between rhyming words only) and its sense (the relation between rhyme’s meaning and context). A short reference is also made to further aspects of the the sub-code of rhyme, such as its syntax (strophic patterns) and the role of pools of rhymes. This leads to a reappraisal of some significant questions raised by the technique of rhyme, e. g. whether or not it always makes a semantic contribution, or what the interplay between its limitations to freedom of expression and its contribution to the expressiveness and poetic value of the text is. The theoretical tools are finally put to the test in a short analysis of the rhyme-words in the form of the sestine.

This article discusses the functioning of proper names in a literary text. The primary attention is paid to the study of the essential functions of anthroponyms. This work will focus on studying the origin of anthroponyms and their use in a poetic text. The features of each functional style have long made it possible to contrast the literary and artistic style with everyone else in the presence of exceptional semantic complexity in the literary texts, a multi-tiered composition, and the aesthetic function of the word that organises the entire context of the work. Onomastic units are integral components of the space of a literary text; they are a connecting, constructive element of the meaningful and semantic space and structure of the text. Proper names participate in the creation of semantic multidimensionality of the text, are a means of translating the author's intention and the artistic idea of the work. The article uses descriptive and comparative linguistic methods. It is noted here that the creation of proper names is a practical process and is directly related to the mental-national thinking of the people. The scientific and methodological study of names is theoretical. The proper name in a work of art performs some artistic functions. They include identification, ensuring unity of perception, characterising a character, shaping his image and plot of work, forming subject-object relationships, spatio-temporal and compositional organisation of work, and implementing intertextual connections.

The translation of certain toponyms that had not yet been assimilated to the Romanian language at the beginning of the 19th century represented a real challenge for translators at that time. A first aspect to be considered here is the linguistic status as proper names and the possible translation options that could not be correlated to any tradition. A second aspect is the precarious stage of Romanian geographical terminology, reflected by the terminological variation for the same concept and the lack of semantic affinity, either real or related to the actual terminology. This article addresses mainly the first aspect mentioned above. The issues addressed are as follows: a concise presentation of the concept of proper names translation, the distinction between untranslatable and translatable or partially translatable proper names, the factors motivating the option of translating or not the translatable terms from a toponymic collocation. Our corpus reflects the incipient stage of the translation of translatable or partially translatable toponyms in Romanian, a stage in which the translator is free to decide upon translatability. Compared to the actual norm, the different choices from one translator to another or even those opted for by the same translator—especially the option of not translating toponyms that are nowadays translated in most languages—reveal the lack of importance of linguistic meaning (that is the lexical meaning of the etymon) of the proper name as far as its functioning was concerned, as well as the role of this non-functionality in identifying the linguistic status of a proper name.

The scientific research was realised on the basis of the existential and psychological novel of V. Domontovych «Doctor Seraphicus». The compositional structure of the literary text was examined by marking the distinction of main types of a speech – the one of the author and the one of the character. It is emphasized that the author’s point of view is most complete and explicitly manifested in the author’s proper speech, which plays a leading role in the formation of the concept of a work, characterized by evaluativity and modality. The principal approaches to the definition of the notion «author’s speech» from the perspective of psychology and linguistics were named. Since the complex functional textual speech unities – descriptions, narrations, reflections structure the author’s opinion, regulate its development and ensure its integrity and completeness, then, the role of each compositional speech form in interpreting the novel’s idea was established and revealed (presentation of the macrocosm and the microcosm of a man, transfer of the temporal sequence and conditionality, reflection of the author’s world perception). The special attention was paid to the form of reflection as a generalized representation of the author’s point of view which is universal and autonomous. The lexical-semantic, structural-syntactic and functional-stylistic features of compositional speech forms are analyzed in this work.

We consider the system of proper names in the early little-known poem by A.T. Tvardovsky “Exordium” (secondary title “The Journey of Vasily Petrov”), which was written by a young poet as preparation for the creation of the famous “The Land of Muravia”, which brought him all-Russian fame. It is proved that the text published in the journal “Nastupleniye” in 1932 is an authorial poetic text, revealing the difficulties of the first time of collectivization. It is shown how the great master of words worked on naming characters, expressing with the help of onomastic vocabulary his assessment of the characters and events. We reveal the nomination motives, which trace the role of onyms in the implementation of the ideological and thematic plan of the work. Using the analysis of onomastic units and their semantic environment, it is shown how A.T. Tvardovsky developed methods of researching proper names in his creative laboratory, which became a kind of master class for many representatives of the Smolensk Poetry School, highlighted by the famous Soviet critic A.V. Makedonov back in 1960. The principle of biography and chronotopy is substantiated, in the light of which all the work of the great poet developed further. Conclusions are made about the significance of the early poem in the context of further work with proper names. The material of this work deepens the study of the early poetic work of A.T. Tvardovsky, one of the great Russian poets of the 20th century.

The article examines the problem of studying the semantics of linguistic units in fiction, in particular, the study of how proper names function in a literary text. In this study, proper names are treated as functional and semantic units of language, speech, and culture. The re-search material is the story by B. K. Zaitsev ‘Priest Kronid’ (1905), and its object is onomas-tic vocabulary and specific constants of Russian Orthodox Christianity. The onomasticon of the story consists of anthroponyms (Kronid, etc.), toponyms (Kostenka, Dmitrovo), hagionyms (Christ, God), eortonyms (Easter, Trinity, Egor’s day, etc.), zoonym (Kashtan), etc. The purpose of the article is to examine how proper names function in B. K. Zaitsev’s text. The study makes a new contribution to as of yet insufficient research of the onomastic space of fiction by B. K. Zaitsev, and its relevance is enhanced by the importance of studying proper names as a component of the writer’s linguistic picture of the world and the need for scientific understanding of the functional role of onomastic units in the literary text in terms of national religious ideas about the world. The paper uses a complex method of studying proper names in fiction, combining various methods and techniques, namely: the method of conceptual analysis, the method of component analysis of fictional text, the method of continuous sampling as well as the semantic and stylistic methods. The author investigates the onomastic field of B. K. Zaitsev’s text and determines the functional role of proper names of different categories. The story reveals associative and semantic connections of individual onyms with certain constants of Russian Orthodox Christianity. The author also makes a number of specific conclusions about the features of B. K. Zaitsev’s poetics, including those about conceptualizing meanings of individual linguistic units and strengthening of the value component in their meaning in the literary text. The linguistic material can be used in special courses on the onomastics of a literary text or issues related to the writer’s linguistic picture of the world, or in courses that include philological analysis of texts.
