Ascidians are sesile marine invertebrates that have bioactive compounds such as antibacterial and anti-UV. The purpose of this study is to determine the antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria and to test the anti-UV activity of the ascidian water fraction. Antibacterial activity test was carried out using the diffusion method (disc diffusion Kirby & Bauer) and the water fraction of ascidian that showing antibacterial activity tested in a UV spectrophotometer to see the anti-UV activity. Results of the study were obtained 4 types of ascidians extracted from partitioned into water fraction, n-hexane fraction, methanol fraction. All three fractions were tested for antibacterial activity and the result showed that there were antibacterial activities of ascidian extract Clavelina sp. against both test bacteria with inhibition of S. aureus and E. coli with strong categories. Ascidian Phlebobranch sp. showed the presence of antibacterial activity with inhibition of S. aureus and E. coli with very strong categories (16,6 mm). extract Eudistoma sp. showed the presence of antibacterial activity with inhibition S. aureus and E. coli in the medium category (9 mm). The water fraction found active in antibacterial testing is then tested using a UV spectrophotometer for anti UV testing, the result show that water fraction of the four ascidians can absorb UV-B (290-320nm) and UV-A ( 320-400nm).Keywords : Ascidian, Antibacterial, Partition, Anti- UV.

Lick leaves (Villebrunea rubescens) are one of the medicinal plants from the Urticaceae family. In Papua, we called it Daun jilat, which is used empirically by the community to treat contusion or bruises in the Serui area, Yapen Island Regency, Papua, Indonesia. Based on the result of the phytochemical screening, V. rubescens contained Alkaloids, Tannins, Saponins, Quinones, and Flavonoids. In previous research on an extract of Lick leaves, it was found that the antibacterial activities within inhibition zone have value of 8.7 mm (125 ?g/mL). This research aims to find out the antibacterial activities of the various fraction of Lick leaves in inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus bacterial and to find out the most effective concentration of the various fraction of Lick leaves. The method used in this research was disc diffusion method and the solution used was ethanol-water, ethyl acetate, and N-hexane with the variable concentration used was 100, 250, 500, 750, 1000ppm. The result showed that Lick leaves fraction of ethanol-water, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane had an inhibition zone against the growth of Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria, while the n-hexane and ethyl acetate had an inhibition zone against the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. However, for the ethyl-acetate, the inhibition zone was categorized as weak. The concentration of Lick leaves which effectively inhibited the growth of bacteria was ethanol-water fraction with an inhibition zone of 7.78 mm against Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria and ethanol-water fraction with an inhibition zone of 3.89 mm against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji daya hambat dari ekstrak metanol beberapa jenis porifera terhadap pertumbuhan bakteri E. coli dan S. aureus. Pengujian aktivitas antibakteri menggunakan metode Kirby-Bauer, yaitu dilakukan dengan mengukur zona hambat di sekeliling cakram kertas. Ekstrak Haliclona sp dapat menghambat pertumbuhan S. aureus pada konsentrasi ekstrak 30%, 60% dan 90% dengan hasil pengukuran diameter zona hambat 13.50 mm, 20.67 mm dan 27.33 mm; serta menghambat pertumbuhan E. coli dengan diameter zona hambat 10.08 mm, 12.83 mm dan 14.17 mm. Daya hambat ekstrak Agelas sp terhadap S. aureus menunjukkan diameter zona hambat 8.33 mm dan hanya menunjukkan pada konsentrasi ekstrak 90%, sementara daya hambat ekstrak Agelas sp pada konsentrasi 30%, 60% dan 90% terhadap E. coli menunjukkan diameter zona hambat sebesar 7.67 mm, 10.17 mm dan 14.17 mm. Daya hambat Spheciospongia sp terhadap S. aureus dan E. coli hanya terlihat pada konsentrasi ekstrak sebesar 90% dengan diameter zona hambat adalah 8.42 mm dan 8.75 mm. Berdasarkan hasil yang diperoleh, dapat disimpulkan bahwa ekstrak Haliclona sp memiliki potensi aktivitas antibakteri yang dapat digunakan sebagai bahan dasar pembuatan obat antibiotik.This research aimed to test the inhibition capabilities of methanol extract from several kinds of Porifera on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus growth. The antibacterial activity test using the Kirby-Bauer method, which delivered by measuring the inhibition zone around paper disc. The extract of Haliclona sp can inhibit the S. aureus growth at 30%, 60% and 90% of extracts concentration with the measurement of inhibition zone diameters are 13.50 mm, 20.67 mm and 27.33 mm; also inhibit the E. coli growth with inhibition zone diameters are 10.08 mm, 12.83 mm and 14.17 mm. The inhibition capability of Agelas sp extract on S. aureus shows that the inhibition zone diameters is 8.83 mm and only appear at 90% of extracts concentration, meanwhile the inhibition capability of Agelas sp extract at concentration 30%, 60% and 90% on E. coli shows diameters of inhibition zone are 7.67 mm, 10.17 mm and 14.17 mm. The inhibition capability of Spheciospongia sp on S. aureus and E. coli only occurred at 90% of extracts concentration with inhibition zone diameters 8.42 mm and 8.75 mm. Based on the results, it can be assumed that extracts of Haliclona sp has a potential antibacterial activity that can be used as a basic ingredients for antibiotic medicine.

This study aimed to determine the effect of concentration ethanol extract from tembelakan leaf (Lantana camara Linn)  on bacteria growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Extraction was done by maceration using ethanol 96% and then separated using rotary evaporator. Antibacterial activity test of the ethanol extract by Well agar diffusion method. Variation in crude extract saponin used in this study was 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and positive controls were used for comparison with Amoxicilin and Chloramphenicole concentration of 25 µg/mL and DMSO as a negative control. The results of antibacterial activity test is indicated by the formation of growth inhibitory region S. aureus and E. coli. The result of growth inhibitory regions was analyzed by One way ANOVA. One way ANOVA test results indicate that there are effects of ethanol extract concentration of tembelekan leaf (L. camara Linn) against S. aureus and E. coli. Effective concentration of ethanol extract tembelekan leaf (L. camara Linn) when compared with positive control to inhibit the growth of S. aureus and E. coli is at 25% with a relatively strong antibacterial activity. Test with phytochemicals screening method which is showed that tembelekan leaf contains the flavanoid, saponins, and tannins compounds as antibacterial

Background: Thousands of people are dying as a result of infections caused by bacteria. Among the main routes of germ transmission are the hands, making hand hygiene very important in preventing the spread of pathogens and bacterial infection. Hand washing with soap and water is considered to be a simple and effective measure. Old soap manufacturers have long had traditional uses in the Lebanese community. Methods: The purpose of this study is to compare the antibacterial activity of oil-based soaps with commercial soap sold in the Lebanese market. Different types of herbal soap and antiseptics have been used in this study. Four bacterial strains were used: Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli and Enterobacter Spp. The antibacterial activities of these soaps were determined by the diffusion method of disks in agar medium. Results and Discussion: Statistical analysis of zones of inhibition showed that S. epidermidis, P. aeruginosa and Enterobacter Spp. were sensitive only to traditional oil-based soaps, which are Sage, Rose Mary and Cedar. In addition, S. aureus showed sensitivity to soaps comprised of essential oils as well as antibacterial synthetic soap, Dettol and Lifebuoy. On the other hand, E. coli showed resistance to all soaps. Soaps comprised of natural essential oils have shown antibacterial activity superior to so-called “Antibacterial” soaps. Conclusion: Based on this study, we can say that the use of soaps with essential oils might be the best option due to their organic origin as well as their antibacterial proved activities.

Bacterial resistance to antibiotics and disinfectants has become a real concern. The hospital presents a favorable environment for the colonization and development of bacteria resistant to antibiotics and disinfectants. The search for new antimicrobial compounds is essential to combat this phenomenon. Tetrazole derivatives may represent a solution due to their interesting antibacterial activity. In this work, two tetrazole derivatives; thiophene-2-carbaldehyde (T2C) and 5-(thiophen-2-yl)-1H-tetrazole (5TPh-1HT), were evaluated for their antibacterial activities against a set of reference strains and strains isolated from the hospital environment. The antibacterial effect was studied by the disc diffusion method and by determination of MIC and MBC. The 5-(thiophen-2-yl)-1H-tetrazole (5TPh-1HT) has a broader spectrum of activity than its oxime derivative (T2C). The latter has bactericidal activity only on gram-negative Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa with MICs ranging from 0.62 mg/ml to 2.5 mg/ml, while 5TPh-1HT has a bactericidal effect on all strains with MICs ranging from 0.62 mg/ml to 1.25 mg/ml. Both products have a significant inhibitory activity on the strains tested in particular E. coli H, S. aureus H, P. aeruginosa and Streptococcus spp A. It was found that these activities vary depending on the microbial strain tested and the product applied.

The antibacterial activity of Tokar sha; a local traditional medication widely used by many people in North-west zone of Nigeria especially Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara against enteric infections were examined against some clinical isolates of pathogenic bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Bacillus cereus and Salmonella typhi) using agar well diffusion method. The pattern of inhibition varied with the tokar sha concentrations and the organisms tested. The tokar sha was more effective on E. coli with a maximum zone of growth inhibition of 25mm at 35mg/ml followed by B. cereus (20mm). However, S. aureus and S. typhi were resistant to tokar sha at all concentrations tested. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were found to be 35mg/ml for both E. coli and B. cereus. The antibacterial activities exhibited by tokar sha in this study could be attributed to the presence of its constituents which signifies the potential of the tokar sha as a therapeutic agent. These findings may justify the ethnomedicinal use of tokar sha as an antibacterial agent against enterobacteria

<p>The research about the use of cinnamon oil as an antibacterial agent on natural paper from Banana <em>(musa<strong> </strong>paradisiaca Linn.) </em>Peel has been conducted. The preparation of the paper using alkalization method, with the use of NaOH 4% at the temperature of 100<sup>o</sup>C for 1.5 hours. The paper is made in two variations, ie with additive cinnamon oil and without additive. The natural paper produced are tested for pH based on SNI ISO 6588-1.2010 and water content by dry-oven method based on SNI ISO 287:2010. The antibacterial activities were tested against <em>Staphylococcus aureus</em> and <em>Escherichia coli </em>using Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. The paper produced meet the standard of ISO 6519:2016 about Basic Paper for Laminated Plastic Wrapping Paper within the parameter of pH and water content. The results showed that the paper with additive cinnamon oil have antibacterial activity againts <em>S</em><em>.</em><em> aureus</em> and <em>E. coli </em>with inhibition diameter zone 15 mm and 13 mm respectively, whereas paper without cinnamon oil additives has no antibacterial activity against either <em>S</em><em>.</em><em> aureus</em> or <em>E. coli. </em> These result indicate that cinnamon oil can be used as an antibacterial agent on the natural paper from Banana peel <em>(musa paradisiaca </em>Linn.<em>)</em>.</p>

Objective: The objective of the study was to evaluate whether ethanolic extracts of Nelumbo nucifera (EENN) seedpod and quercetin (active component of NN) possess antibacterial proprieties against Gram (-) bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Gram (+) bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus. Methods: Antibacterial activities of EENN seedpod and quercetin were investigated using disc diffusion method, minimum inhibitory concentration against E. coli and P. aeruginosa and Gram (+) bacteria such as S. aureus. Results: The antibacterial activity of both EENN seedpod and quercetin was found to be increased in dose-dependent manner. The maximum zone of inhibition was exhibited by both EENN seedpod and quercetin against E. coli (14 mm and 15 mm) and P. aeruginosa (13 mm and 15 mm). Gram-negative bacteria were more susceptible to the EENN seedpod extract and quercetin than Gram-positive bacteria.Conclusion: The results of the present study suggested that the effect of EENN seedpod and quercetin against the tested bacteria in vitro may contribute to the in vivo activities of the EENN seedpod and quercetin.

Antibacterial activity of Samanea saman usually shows a positif correlation to the flavonoid and phenolic contents.  The aim of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial activity of the ethanol extract of Samanea saman against Escherechia coli and Staphylococcus aureus and determine the total flavonoid and phenolic contents of the extract. The extraction was done by ethanol 96% at room temperature. The antibacterial assay was conducted by agar disc diffusion method. The total flavonoid and phenolic contents were determined by UV-Vis Spectrofotometer with the standard of quersetin and galic acid, respectively. The extraction of 250 g of Samanea saman leaves resulted in 24.5 g of ethanol extracts. The ethanol extract showed a moderate inhibition of 8.33 mm towards E. coli and a strong inhibition of 13.6 mm towards S. aureus at the concentration of 4%. The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of the extract against E. coli and S.aureus were of 3% and 0.3%”, respectively. The total flavonoid and phenolic contents were successively 1233.2991 mg QE/100g and 2544.6154 mg GAE/100g. Schiff base ligand derived from glycine and benzaldehyde was synthesized together with its metal complexes (zinc and cobalt). The solubility, IR analysis and conductivity measurement were carried out. Antibacterial activities were evaluated using well-diffusion method. The bacterial assay was carried out on two pyogenic bacteria E. coli and Staphylococci and the results showed that the complexes have high antibacterial activity.
