To meet the materials demand and performance of automobile components it is necessary of developing composite materials. Aluminium Metal Matrix Composite (AMMC) are utilized to meet the industrial needs. AMMC is the mixture of aluminium and silicon carbide with minimum quantity of other materials like magnesium, aluminium oxide, graphite which are mixed in precise quantity to increase the chemical, mechanical and thermal properties of material. This paper deals with the investigation of mechanical behaviour and properties of AMMC produced by stir casting technique where silicon carbide is reinforced with alloy 6061 for using in Disc Brake. The tensile, flexural, hardness and impact tests were performed and the results showed that the hybrid composites had better properties than pure aluminium and this kind of material may be subjected to use in Disc Brake. The microstructure of the hybrid composites were analyzed using Optical Microscopy.

The research article addresses the reciprocating wear behaviour of hybrid AA7075 reinforced with boron carbide and boron nitride through a stir-casting technique. The experiment involved varying wt.% of the secondary particle boron carbide (3, 6 and 9) while boron nitride (3) was kept as constant. The hybrid composites were characterised using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy. The hardness and tensile behaviour of the hybrid composites were evaluated. Reciprocating wear behaviour of the hybrid composites were examined using a tribometer by varying the wear parameters such as load and sliding distance. The results revealed that AA7075/6boron carbide/3boron nitride had better hardness, tensile and wear properties. The surface morphology of the wear samples was analysed using SEM.

Composite materials like Aluminium metal matrix composite is playing a very important role in manufacturing industries e.g. automobile and aerospace industries, due to their superior properties such as light weight, low density, high specific modulus, high fatigue strength etc., In this study Aluminium(Al 6061) is reinforced with Silicon Carbide particles and fabricated by Stir Casting Technique (vortex method). The MMC rectangular bars (samples) are prepared with Al6061 and SiC (28 µ size) as the reinforced particles by weight fraction from 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% of SiC. The microstructure analysis and Mechanical properties like Tensile Strength, Vickers Hardness and Charpy Impact Strength were investigated on prepared specimens. It is observed that the properties are increased with increasing of reinforced specimens by weight fraction.

The response of two different types of aluminium matrix composites (AMCs) reinforced with silicon carbide ceramic particulates or nickel metallic particulates to hot compression testing parameters was evaluated. The composites were produced via two-step stir-casting technique. Axisymmetric compression testing was performed on the samples at different deformation temperatures of 220 and 370 °Ϲ, 0.5 and 5 s−1 strain rates and total strains of 0.6 and 1.2. The initial and post-deformed microstructures were studied using optical and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that flow stress was significantly influenced by imposed deformation parameters and the type of reinforcements used in the AMCs. Nickel particulate reinforced aluminium matrix composite (AMC) showed superior resistance to deformation in comparison with silicon carbide reinforced AMC under the different testing conditions. In both AMCs, work hardening, dynamic recovery and dynamic recrystallisation influenced their response to imposed parameters. The signature of dynamic recrystallisation was very apparent in aluminium matrix composite reinforced with nickel particulates.


In this research, an effort is made to familiarize and best potentials of the reinforcing agent in aluminum 7075 matrices with naturally occurring Beryl (Be) and Graphene (Gr) to develop a new hybrid composite material. A stir casting technique was adopted to synthesize the hybrid nanocomposites. GNPS were added in volume fractions of 0.5wt%, 1wt%, 1.5wt%, and 2wt% and with a fixed volume fraction of 6 wt.% of Beryl. As cast hybrid composites were microstructurally characterized with scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Microstructure study through scanning electron microscope demonstrated that the homogeneous distribution reinforcement Beryl and GNPs into the Al7075 matrix. Brinell hardness and tensile strength of synthesized materials were investigated. The hybrid Al7075-Beryl-GNPs composites showed better mechanical properties compared with base Al7075 matrix material. The ascast Al7075-6wt.% Beryl-2wt.%GNPs showed 49.41% improvement in hardness and 77.09% enhancement in ultimate tensile strength over Al7075 alloy.

Aluminium matrix composites (AMCs) have emerged as the substitute for the monolithic (unreinforced) materials over the past few decades. The applications of AMCs are common in automotive, aerospace, defence and biomedical sectors due to its lower weight, high strength, high resistance against corrosion and high thermal and electrical conductivity. In this work, it is aimed fabricate a new class Al 7075 based hybrid composites reinforcing with nanoparticulates suitable for automotive application. Al7075 reinforced with fixed quantity of boron carbide (B4C) (1.5 wt.%) and varying wt % of flyash (0.5 wt.%, 1.0 wt.%, 1.5 wt.%) is fabricated using ultrasonic-assisted stir casting technique. Physical and mechanical characterization such as density, porosity, micro hardness, tensile strength and impact strength were estimated for three different compositions. The tensile strength and percentage increase in hardness value of the nanocomposite Al7075-B4C (1.5 wt. %)-flyash (0.5 wt. %): HNC3 found maximum as 294 MPa and 32.93%. In comparison with Al7075 alloy the impact strength of HNC3 shows the highest percentage of 9.31% respectively.

The objective of this work is to investigate the process parameters which influence the fracture toughness of aluminum-silicon carbide particulate composite prepared using the stir casting technique. The Taguchi’s design of experiments is conducted to analyze the process parameters. Three parameters considered are composition of material, grain size and a/W ratio. From the Taguchi’s analysis, on compact tension specimens, aluminum 6061 reinforced with 9 wt% of the silicon carbide particles composite and a/W ratio of 0.45 are considered to be optimized parameters. Taguchi's technique result shows that the increment in the a/W ratio causes decrement in the load carrying capacity of the composite. Whereas the fine grain size of silicon carbide have better toughness values. From the ANOVA outcomes it is clear that the composition and a/W ratio of the geometry has more influence on the fracture toughness than the grain size of reinforcement.

The aim of this work is to investigate the influence of the addition of silicon carbide and molybdenum disulfide on the microstructure and the tensile strength of the Al-Flyash hybrid composites prepared using the stir casting technique. The composite with aluminum 6061 alloy as the matrix and flyash as the reinforcement, with different weight fractions, is investigated to study its microstructure and the tensile strength. The same has been compared with the hybrid composites with Aluminum-Flyash/SiC and Aluminum-Flyash/MoS2 for different weight fractions of the reinforcements. The tensile tests were conducted as per ASTM standard testing procedures at room temperature. From the results it is identified that tensile strength of the Al6061-Flyash composite is lesser than the Al6061-Flyash/SiC and Al6061-Flyash/MoS2 hybrid composites. It is also observed that increment in the composition of the SiC and MoS2 causes the increment in the tensile strength of the hybrid composite. This increment in the tensile strength is due to good interface bonding and uniform distribution of the reinforcements in the composite.

In this study, an attempt was made to develop and characterize Snake Grass Fiber (SGF)/Silicon Carbide (SiC)/epoxy and Snake Grass Fiber/Sisal Fiber (SF)/Silicon Carbide/epoxy hybrid composites using a compression moulding technique. Mechanical characteristics of the produced hybrid composites such as tensile, flexural, and hardness tests were analyzed. Also experiments have been carried out to predict the thermal stability of the fabricated composite samples. The interface between fiber and matrix was examined by using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Among SGF/SiC/epoxy and SGF/SF/SiC/epoxy composites, it has been observed that hybrid composite SGF/SF/SiC/epoxy exhibits the higher hardness of 82 Shore-D, tensile strength of 51 MPa and flexural strength of 73 MPa. In contrast to the mechanical properties, the percentage of water absorption was lower in the SGF/SiC/epoxy hybrid composite. It is proven from the results that the SGF/SF/SiC/epoxy hybrid composites will enhance the strength of the composites. This composite material is also a potential candidate for the hardware of energy devices including electrochemical energy along with Fuel Cell systems.
