scholarly journals An Initial Research: The Level of Environmental Awareness and Knowledge among Homestay Operators in Selangor, Malaysia

Malaysia is a popular tourist destination in Southeast Asia. An increase of tourist arrivals (both domestic and international visitors) to Malaysia has seen a yearly increase in the number of accommodation available, especially those that are environmentally friendly. However, being environmentally friendly is a challenge for the tourism industry, especially when involving the accommodation sector. This is evidenced by the findings of a previous study that issues related to environmental sustainability are among problems faced by homestays in Malaysia. Since environmental awareness has been increasing across the world, these issues are important aspects that should be explored, especially relating to the tourism industry and specifically in the accommodation sector. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the level of environmental awareness and knowledge among homestay operators in Selangor, Malaysia. In this preliminary study, 100 respondents were involved, who were selected using simple random sampling among homestay operators in Selangor, Malaysia. The descriptive analysis was done using SPSS software. The results show that the mean value for environmental awareness and knowledge is good. This shows that there is a high level of awareness and knowledge among homestay operators.

The tourism industry is one of the pillars of Indonesian economics. One of the fastest growing tourism destinations in Indonesia is Lombok. Thus, this study aims to examine the brand equity of Lombok. A consumer-based brand equity concept in the context of place branding was applied in this study. The data was collected from Lombok visitors in May 2013 via a survey questionnaire. Respondents, both domestic and international visitors, were chosen using the convenience sampling method. Descriptive analysis and a one-sample t-test were used to analyze the data. This study found that there are statistical differences of brand awareness, brand image, perceived quality of, and loyalty to, Lombok as a tourism destination, thus the respondents’ visit to Lombok influenced their awareness, image perception, perceived quality of, and loyalty to, Lombok. Meanwhile, mean value differences among variables addressed different insights from each dimension of Lombok brand equity. Despite of its small number of respondents, this study provides the insight of a preliminary project for branding Lombok.

The purpose of this paper is to conduct an exploratory investigation on the level of operations management best practices.  A sample random t-test analysis was used upon a high technology company that was selected based on simple random sampling from government agency directory. After various attempts, 72 out of 138 are providing feedback. However, only 34 can be used, the rest did not answer completely. Descriptive analysis and t-test analysis were performed on 34 completed feedbacks. Six factors in the form of quality commitment, customer focus, formalization of performance measurement, people management, process management and technology management were examined as predictors for operations management best practices. Findings indicated that the mean value is more than 3 for all dimensions. Furthermore, most cases are significant as the selected samples are high technology based companies and their workers are knowledgeable in terms of operations management best practices.

Due to globalization and the impact of industrialization and urbanization, natural resources are wasted, and popular consumption leads to environmental waste. The problem of waste that deteriorates individual and social life is a prominent current issue. Recycling, described as the remanufacturing, production and employment of collected material, is an important solution to that problem. The present study aimed to determine the awareness of pre-service social studies teachers about the concept of environmental waste recycling and to analyze acrostic poems written by the participants. The study findings included the views of the pre-service social studies teachers. A semi-structured interview form was developed by the authors under expert supervision and employed to collect the views of the pre-service teachers. The pre-service teachers included in the study sample were assigned with simple random sampling technique and the study group included 162 pre-service social studies teachers. The descriptive survey model was employed in the study, the data were analyzed with content and descriptive analysis techniques to determine thematic codes. Furthermore, an acrostic poem authoring activity on the concept of recycling was conducted with the participants. The poems authored by the participants are presented as a category in a table in the findings section. The study findings revealed significant results on the recycling concept and processes. It was determined that the views of the participating pre-service social studies teachers reflected a high level of awareness on the concept of recycling and exhibited various perspectives on the implementation.

This study aims to evaluate the levels of SMPN 1 Ambulu Jember ( Junior High School 1 of Ambulu, Jember Regency) students’ obedience to authority, ascertain the levels of religious fundamentalism of the SMPN 1 Ambulu Jember students, and determine whether religious fundamentalism affects students’ obedience to authority. This study is quantitative predictive research, employing descriptive analysis and linear regression on the population of SMPN 1 Ambulu Jember students. The subjects were 139 students, chosen using proportional random sampling and simple random sampling. As for the instrumentals, the study used Obedient-Disobedient Tendency Scale with a reliability of 0.911 and Religious Fundamentalism Scale with a reliability of 0,758. The findings demonstrated that 52% of the subjects possess a low level of obedience to authority, whereas 55% of them have a high level of religious fundamentalism. The R-value obtained by the variable of hardiness on the variable of happiness was quite significant, namely 0.825. The R-square value of 0.680 also indicated that religious fundamentalism played a role in obedience to authority for 68% and 32% while having other factors as well. The significance value of 0.00 < 0.05 means that the research hypothesis is accepted. Keywords: religious fundamentalism, obedience, students

Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between religiosity, green purchase attitude (GPA), subjective norm (SN), perceived behavioural control (PBC) and green purchase intention (GPI) towards the selection of environmentally friendly hotel. The current study argues that consumers’ incentive variable, namely, religiosity, can influence consumers’ environmentally friendly hotel selection. Design/methodology/approach This study had successfully gathered 404 completed questionnaire sets through online surveys. All survey data were subjected to descriptive analysis and analysis of variance using SPSS. Besides that, confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modelling were performed for the testing of hypotheses. Findings The results suggest that religiosity significantly and positively influences GPA, SN, PBC and GPI. Furthermore, GPA and PBC positively and significantly influence GPI. The SN also displays significant positive influence on GPA, while GPA plays a full mediation role between SN and GPI. In addition, statistically significant differences in religiosity, SN and PBC were obtained between religious affiliations of consumers towards environmentally friendly hotel selection. Originality/value This study extended the existing knowledge based on the selection of environmentally friendly hotels among religious consumers in the tourism literature. Besides that, these empirical findings would greatly benefit hotel managers and other key stakeholders in the tourism industry.

Global warming is a problem that must be faced by living things. To reduce global warming by providing Green Open Space (GOS). GOS in the city of Bandar Lampung has experienced a broad decline due to the rampant land conversion as happened at Bukit Sukamenanti, due to the existence of rock mining. The purpose of this study was to determine the attitudes of the community, the relationship between the level of knowledge and attitudes and willingness to pay the community to maintain open green space. The sampling method used was simple random sampling with a total of 93 respondents consisting of 35 miners and 58 non-miners. Data collection uses observation, interview and literature studies. Data analysis using quantitative descriptive analysis techniques. The results of the study is the attitude of the community refused to change land use as much as 66.5%. The level of knowledge has a very significant positive relationship to the attitude of the non mining community, but has a non-significant negative relationship between the level of knowledge and the attitude of the mining community. The higher the level of knowledge the community is not the miner, the more positive his attitude will be. But for the mining community, even though they have a high level of knowledge, they do not have an influence on attitudes because of the economic needs that must be met from mining. Total value of willingness to pay the community to maintain green open space is IDR 89.185.648/month.
