This study was carried out with an aim of evaluation of performance of Hassawi peach rootstocks and testing their variance towards salinity stress thus to find out a quick effective modern technique for their reculture and re-propagation again in the region. Eight different concentrations of sodium chloride (NaCl) that represent progressive gradual levels of salinity were used to investigate tolerability of the explants towards variant levels of salinity stress. Thus to evaluate the performance of these Hassawi peach rootstocks (peach, plum ]ghwj[, and almond). Date and results declared the general superiority of bitter almond to the other rootstocks, as it vitally survived and tolerated salinity to 3500 ppm NaCl, followed by peach that tolerated salinity to 2500 ppm, and eventually ghwj that just survived with maximum tolerance of 2000 ppm of NaCl. The study recommends to count on bitter almond as a salinity tolerant rootstock followed by peach for grafting Hassawi peach rootstocks for its regeneration again in Al-Ahsa oasis, and to exclude plum rootstock because of its low salinity tolerance besides its very low harmonization with peach that negatively affect grafting process.

During 1974-1984, Lake Buchanan and seven peripheral pools usually contained water for only a few months each year, commencing in late summer. They ranged in salinity from 1 to 202 g l-1, their waters were dominated by sodium chloride, but with Ca2+/Mg2+ ratios of c. 1, and were generally alkaline. The fauna of 53 species included three halobionts (e.g. Parartemia minuta, Diacypris compacts), 18 halophilics (e.g. Mytilocypris splendida, Trigonocypris globulosa, Microcyclops dengizicus) and many salt- tolerant freshwater forms, mainly insects. Overall, the fauna was distinctly Australian, but some prominent taxa found in southern salt lakes were absent and others were replaced by local endemics and tropical species. Past climatic cycles have probably influenced the composition of the fauna.

As a marine pathogenic bacterium that inhabits seawater or seafood, Vibrio vulnificus encounters low salinity and other stresses in the natural environment and during food processing. This investigation explores the cross-protective response of sublethal heat-, acid-, or bile-adapted V. vulnificus YJ03 against lethal low-salinity stress. Experimental results reveal that the acid (pH 4.4)– and heat (41°C)–adapted V. vulnificus were not cross-protected against the lethal low-salinity challenge (0.04% NaCl). The bile (0.05%)–adapted exponential- and stationary-phase cells were cross-protected against low salinity, whereas low-salinity (0.12% NaCl)–adapted stationary cells were sensitized against 12% bile stress. Results of this study provide further insight into the interaction between low salinity and other common stresses in V. vulnificus.

Measuring metabolite patterns and antioxidant ability is vital to understanding the physiological and molecular responses of plants under salinity. A morphological analysis of five rapeseed cultivars showed that Yangyou 9 and Zhongshuang 11 were the most salt-tolerant and -sensitive, respectively. In Yangyou 9, the reactive oxygen species (ROS) level and malondialdehyde (MDA) content were minimized by the activation of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) for scavenging of over-accumulated ROS under salinity stress. Furthermore, Yangyou 9 showed a significantly higher positive correlation with photosynthetic pigments, osmolyte accumulation, and an adjusted Na+/K+ ratio to improve salt tolerance compared to Zhongshuang 11. Out of 332 compounds identified in the metabolic profile, 225 metabolites were filtrated according to p < 0.05, and 47 metabolites responded to salt stress within tolerant and sensitive cultivars during the studied time, whereas 16 and 9 metabolic compounds accumulated during 12 and 24 h, respectively, in Yangyou 9 after being sown in salt treatment, including fatty acids, amino acids, and flavonoids. These metabolites are relevant to metabolic pathways (amino acid, sucrose, flavonoid metabolism, and tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA), which accumulated as a response to salinity stress. Thus, Yangyou 9, as a tolerant cultivar, showed improved antioxidant enzyme activity and higher metabolite accumulation, which enhances its tolerance against salinity. This work aids in elucidating the essential cellular metabolic changes in response to salt stress in rapeseed cultivars during seed germination. Meanwhile, the identified metabolites can act as biomarkers to characterize plant performance in breeding programs under salt stress. This comprehensive study of the metabolomics and antioxidant activities of Brassica napus L. during the early seedling stage is of great reference value for plant breeders to develop salt-tolerant rapeseed cultivars.

One hundred four healthy premature infants, of birth weight 1,000 to 1,800 gm, were fed one of five feedings: (1) human milk; (2) human milk plus 13 meq/l of sodium chloride; (3) human milk plus 13 meq/l of sodium chloride and 18 meq/l of potassium chloride; (4) a half-skimmed cows milk formula; and (5) a partially-skimmed vegetable oil, cows milk formula. The infants fed any of the three human milk formulas gained weight at a slower rate than the infants fed either of the two cows milk formulas. Infants whose diets were changed from unmodified human milk to the half-skimmed cows milk gained large amounts of weight, and at times were visibly edematous. Infants whose diets were changed from the human milks with added sodium chloride, to the half-skimmed cows milk, gained lesser amounts of weight and did not become edematous. The infants fed the two cows milk diets gained similar amounts of weight, although one diet provided 6.5 gm/kg/day, the other 3.1 gm/kg/day of protein.

Fifteen salt tolerant CIP (International Potato Centre) Potato genotypes along with BARI (Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute) Alu 7 (Diamant) and one local variety viz., Dohazari Sada were evaluated at Bashkhali, Chittagong during 2011-12 to screen the suitable genotypes for cultivation in saline areas of Bangladesh. Diamant and Dohazari Sada and all of the CIP genotypes were found to grow well up to 60 DAP (Days After Planting) at saline areas having healthy plants and no senescence was noticed but after that 61-100% plants died due to high level of soil salinity (6.41dS/m) depending on genotypes. Genotype CIP 112 gave the highest yield (21.07 t/ha) and CIP 102 was comparatively less affected by soil salinity than the other genotypes.
