Synthetic dyes release huge amount of waste and uniform colourants lead to health hazard. It also disturbing the ecobalance of the nature. Natural dyes are mostly derived from plants, invertebrates, or minerals. The most of the natural dyes are vegetable dyes from plant sources-roots, berries, bark, leaves, and wood—and other organic sources such as fungi and lichens. Natural dyes exhibit good biodegradability and are more compatible with the environment. In spite of their inferior fastness, natural dyes are more acceptable to environmentally conscious people around the world. The present study deals with the natural dyes extracted from Rubia Cordifloria. The extracted dye used to dye selected silk fabric and myrobalan mordant used for dye ability, fastness properties, absorbency test. Two shades with different concentration have been developed. Absorbency properties of the dyes extracted from madder and sinking test was determined. The colour fastness through washing and rubbing (Wet and Dry) was an excellent satisfaction in both different concentrations.

Pewarna asli dianggap sebagai pewarna mampan dan mesra alam; mereka boleh menghasilkan warna yang berbeza warna dan mempunyai ketahanan luntur yang lebih rendah daripada pewarna sintetik. Oleh itu, kertas kerja ini dikaji pada sifat kubu daripada pewarna yang diekstrak daripada kacang belalang dan buah-buahan asam buah.Warna-warna ini dipetik menggunakan kaedah berair dan pelarut dan telah digunakan di dataran terluntur ditenun kapas dan sutera kain.Yang digunakan bagi pedas meningkatkan penembusan warna (pewarna) dan sampel dicelup telah tertakluk kepada ujian kubu (membasuh, menggosok, peluh & ujian cahaya). Perbandingan analisis kepada tahap pewarnaan telah direkodkan dan ujian kubu baik daripada analisis membuktikan bahawa; warna boleh digunakan sebagai pewarna pada kapas dan sutera kain.   An interest for natural dyes increased several years ago but on the part of the consumers, the benefits are just beginning to be felt. Natural dyes are considered as sustainable and ecofriendly dyes; they can produce different shades of colours and have lower colour fastness than synthetic dyes. Therefore, this paper researched on the fastness properties of colorant extracted from locust beans and tamarind fruits pods. The colours were extracted using aqueous and solvent methods and were applied on bleached plain weaved cotton and silk fabrics. The use of mordant increased the penetration of the colours (dyes) and the dyed samples were subjected to fastness test (washing, rubbing, perspiration & light test). Comparative analyses on the degree of staining were recorded and good fastness test from the analysis proved that; the colours can be used as dyes on cotton and silk fabrics.

In search of eco-friendly processes for dyeing with natural dyes research has been focused on identification and standardization of natural dyes. Considering the growing importance of natural colourants all over the world, the present work was undertaken with on aim to study the colour fastness properties of wool yarn dyed with bark of Ziziphus jujuba Mill. (ber). The dyed wool samples had good to excellent colour fastness to washing, crocking perspiration and sunlight. Different shades of brown colour of rust, candy pink, biscuit brown, nut brown and light brown were obtained using different mordants. This type of eco-dyeing process may be helpful in increasing the variety of colours in the field of textiles.

Abstract: Dying is a popular practice in textile industry which is prevalent at all parts of the world from the period of ancient civilization. Initially, natural dyes i.e. dye derived from natural resources like vegetables, flowers, minerals, plants etc. were used. Now-a-days, due to technological and scientific innovations synthetic dyes are processed at large scale in the laboratories as it is still one of the most profitable industry globally. However, the rapid utilization of chemicals in textile industry for production of synthetic dyes causes degradation of environment like soil pollution, water pollution etc. Hence, it is necessary to promote the utilization of natural dyes globally. In this paper, the bleached silk fabric was dyed with Indian Madder natural dye at different temperature and the colour strength is measured spectrophotometrically in order to study the effectiveness of the dye. The worldwide demand of natural dyes is of great interest due to the increased public awareness about the atmospheric and environmental pollution caused by the commercially available synthetic dyes. Nepal being wealthy in flora, would be fine research laboratory land for the plant based natural dyes. Among most of the natural dyes, plant-based dyes/pigments have wide range of applications in fabric, food, drug coloring, therapeutic values and also in solar cells in presence of different mordants. The use of mordant is inevitable during natural dyeing process in order to improve the fastness properties on fabrics, foods and drugs by forming a co-ordination complex with dye. In this article, a short overview of plant based natural dyes extraction applications and their scope and limitations will be discussed with special reference to Nepal. In the present review, the green methods of dye extraction, and dyeing technologies will be discussed, and the research fields based on natural dyes will be explored. Some of the natural dyes has also shown the antimicrobial, antioxidant, antifungal properties and hence are also discussed with biomedical applications.

The present study is based on the process development for colouring of silk yarns with Dhavdi flowers using selected mordants to study its effects on colour fastness properties and optimization of different extraction conditions, duration and concentration for better dye and its shades. The results revealed that aqueous medium was suitable for extraction of dye from pink petals of Dhavdi flowers for one hour. The shades of midbuff, sand stone ,coffee and olive green brown were obtained by taking 4 g dried powder of dhavdi dye for dyeing 1 gram of silk material for 45 minutes. All the four mordants were found suitable for application on silk, 10 % of alum, 3 % of chrome, 2 % of copper sulphate and 3% ferrous sulphate were found to produce best shades on silk material. Post mordanting had resulted in darker shades in all the mordant. Simultaneous mordanting method was found best in case of chrome mordant. Excellent to outstanding fastness to sunlight was found in all mordanted samples. There was absolutely no staining in washed samples. Colour change was not found in the samples subjected to crocking in both dry and wet conditions except in case of ferrous mordanted samples,. The colour was stable as shown by their higher resistance towards acidic and alkaline perspiration. Hence, the dye obtained from Dhavdi flowers proved to be extremely good and can be recommended for dyeing silk fabric.

The main idea of extracting dyes from plant (natural) sources is to avoid the environmental pollution. Natural dye from plants has been given much interest in recent years due to the threat and harmful effects are used by synthetic dyes and environmental awareness created by researchers. The drawback of synthetic dyes is that they are not durable as they do not completely fix on all kind of fabric and remaining dyestuff drained into rivers, becoming the cause of water pollution as well as they cause diseases in human being like cancer and allergies. On the other hand, natural dyes are eco-friendly and find use in the colouring of textiles, drugs and cosmetics etc. Owing to their non-toxic effects, they are also even used for colouring various food products. Mordents are used in natural dyes which enhance the colour of dye and stick it on fabric. Due to lack of availability of precise technical knowledge on the extracting and dyeing technique, it has not commercially succeeded like the synthetic dyes. Hence, the present study was planned to isolate eco-friendly dyes from the bark of the plants (Ziziphus jujube Mill., Albizialebbeck L., Cordia dichotoma G Forst., Ficus benghalensis L. and Cassia fistula L.) and the roots of Ficus benghalensis L. Later on the dyes were applied on silk fabric by using metamordating technique. Then fastness properties like rubbing, heating, washing and sunlight were evaluated by using gray scale. F. benghalensis showed excellent fastness properties. Z. jujube showed series of colour variations on silk. Therefore, the bark and root of these plants can be successfully used for dyeing of silk. Natural dyes worldwide should be increased to prevent us from pollution and other harmful effects.

Biocolourants have been investigated as alternatives to synthetic dyes. However, natural origin per se is not a label of harmlessness and research is needed to obtain safe dyes. We studied the cytotoxicity of the extracts from fungal (Cortinarius semisanguineus, Tapinella atrotomentosa) and plant (Tanacetum vulgare, Salix phylicifolia) sources and the woollen fabrics dyed with the extracts. Cytotoxicity in vitro using hepa-1 mouse hepatoma cells for 24 h and 72 h exposure was observed as the highest tolerated dose. All biocolourants produced intensive colour on fabrics with fastness properties from moderate to good. The Salix and Cortinarius samples did not show any cytotoxic effects, whereas the Tanacetum and Tapinella samples had slightly higher test values but were not interpreted as being significantly toxic. Higher than zero values of the undyed fabrics showed the importance of examining their toxicity as well. It was found that the cytotoxicity of the samples dyed with the biocolourants did not differ significantly from the undyed wool fabric. The concentrations of dyes used in the assays were very low, imitating the dose of the user. In addition to colouring properties, natural dyes may have pharmaceutical and antibacterial properties which would enhance the interest in using them in products for added value.

At present, a higher demand is put towards the use of natural dyes due to increased awareness of the environmental and health hazards associated with the synthesis and use of synthetic dyes. This research was conducted using onion outer skins as a potential source of natural plant dyes. In this study, extraction of dye was carried out in aqueous boiling method. Premordanting technique was followed using different mordants, namely alum, ferrous sulphate, tin, tannic acid, tartaric acid, and their combinations on silk fabric. Fabric samples dyed without using any mordant were then compared with the dyed samples pretreated with the mordants. The range of colors developed on dyed materials was evaluated by measuring the color values with respect to K/S values and color coordinates. It was concluded that the color values were found to be influenced by the addition of mordants, and thus different fashion hues were obtained from the same amount of dye extract using different mordants. Ferrous sulphate was found as the most influential mordant. ΔEcmc values between unmordanted (Reference dyed) and metallic mordanted fabric samples were found higher than those between unmordanted and nonmetallic mordanted fabric samples. The dyed samples were evaluated for color fastness to washing, light, drycleaning, rubbing, and perspiration. The color fastness properties were found to be satisfactory and improved in many cases. From the fastness results, it was obvious that these dyes can also be applied on silk fabric without using any mordant if required.


Nowadays, all consumers are more preference for the natural herbal textile dye garment products. These herbal dye cloths are more eco friendly products. It is give non-toxic, chemical free product and this does not harmful environment nature. Herbal textile is dyed entirely with herbal extraction, without using any sort of chemical. The herbs used different from vegetable dyes as they are not only natural but also have medicinal value. These herbs are applied directly to the fabric with the help of natural ingredients, So that the medicinal value of the herbs can be kept intact, because synthetic dyes large amount of waste and unfixed colorants poses serious health hazard and are disturbing the eco balance of nature. Environmental issues in the production and application of synthetic dyes once again revived consumer interest in natural dyes. In this research work we have applied natural herbal dyes on cotton fabrics surface. This work has used natural herbal dyes like turmeric, aloe vera, neem, beetroot, pomegranate and onion. Edible gum and cow urine has used to improve in colour fastness and dye absorbency performance. This research main aims to give a new approach natural herbal dyes products will more used in textile sector. It will more help to reduce diseases problem skin allergies and skin infection.
