The presence of methylene blue (MB) in wastewater is a major concern in the environment due to its low biodegradability and harmful effect on man. The adsorption of MB from aqueous solution onto activated carbon (AC) prepared from mango seed shells sourced locally in Ogbomoso Township was investigated in this study. The AC was prepared from mango seed shell by activating with BaCl2 at impregnation ratio I.R (1:2 w/w), microwave frequency (600 Hz), and time (30 min) before being carbonized at 500 °C for 20 min. Batch adsorption experiment was carried out at 25 °C to study the effect of contact time and initial dye concentration on MB adsorption. The equilibrium kinetics and adsorption mechanism were investigated. The pseudo first order, high correlation coefficients, R, (0.9491 and 0.9907) for initial concentrations of 10 and 15 mg/L, respectively, was very suitable to describe the kinetic characteristics of the MB adsorption on to mango seed shell activated carbon, Weber and Morris intra-particle model with R of 0.9907, is very fit to describe the diffusion mechanism of the adsorption process. The result implied that mango seed shell was suitable as an adsorbent material for adsorption of MB.

The utilization of biopolymer derived from Moringa oleifera bark using ZnCl2 and H2SO4 as activating agents for eliminating Methylene blue, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa from producing wastewater. In this study, Methylene blue and both bacteria were effectively adsorbed by activated carbon with lowest dosage. The activated carbon was prepared from natural-by product of Moringa oleifera bark by pyrolysis in a furnace at 700°C for 1 h. The characteristics of activated carbon have been determined using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), pHzpc (zero point charge), and FTIR spectroscopy. The obtained result were closely fitted with Freundlich isotherm model and adsorption kinetics follow the pseudo-second order model with the highest value of correlation coefficient (R2~1). Adsorption quantity was dose dependent and bacteria were maximum adsorbed using 10 mg of activated carbon as well as 25mg for methylene blue. The maximum adsorption capacity showed within 1 hour. The bacterial load was reduced by 98% for E. coli, 96% for P. aeruginosa as well as methylene blue reduced 94.2% from aqueous solution using batch adsorption methods. Adsorption process controlled by film diffusion mechanism. These result proposed that the activated carbon of Moringa oleifera can be used as a good adsorbent for the removal of Methylene blue, E. coli and P. aeruginosa.

This study was conducted to determine the adsorption removal of dyes by powdered activated carbon (PAC, Norit) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs, Chinese Academy of Science) from an aqueous solution. Methylene blue (MB) and Congo red (CR) were selected as model compounds. The adsorbents tested have a high surface area (PAC 835 m2/g, MWCNTs 358 m2/g) and a well-developed porous structure which enabled the effective treatment of dye-contaminated waters and wastewaters. To evaluate the capacity of PAC and MWCNTs to adsorb dyes, a series of batch adsorption experiments was performed. Both adsorbents exhibited a high adsorptive capacity for MB and CR, and equilibrium data fitted well with the Langmuir model, with the maximum adsorption capacity up to 400 mg/g for MB and 500 mg/g for CR. The separation factor, RL, revealed the favorable nature of the adsorption process under experimental conditions. The kinetics of adsorption was studied at various initial dye concentrations and solution temperatures. The pseudo-second-order model was used for determining the adsorption kinetics of MB and CR. The data obtained show that adsorption of both dyes was rapid in the initial stage and followed by slower processing to reach the plateau. The uptake of dyes increased with contact time, irrespective of their initial concentration and solution temperature. However, changes in the solution temperature did not significantly influence dye removal.

Chemical activation process was applied to prepare a cocoa nib-based activated carbon using potassium carbonate (K2CO3). The performance of the activated carbon in removing Methylene Blue from aqueous solution was investigated by batch adsorption studies. The adsorptive properties were studied in terms of initial concentration (C0: 100-300 mg/L) and contact time effects. The experimental isotherm data fitted well the Langmuir and Temkin models. The adsorption kinetic followed the pseudo-second-order model and Boyd model explained the mechanism of adsorption. The results indicate that the chemically produced activated cocoa nib carbon has significant potential to be used as an adsorbent material for adsorption of Methylene Blue from aqueous solution.

Two viscose-based activated carbon fiber felts (VACFF-1300 and VACFF-1600) with different specific surface areas and pore structures were prepared via two-step carbonization and steam activation and characterized by SEM observation, N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, Fourier-transform infrared, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. They were used as adsorbents for the removal of methylene blue dye from aqueous solution, and the adsorption equilibrium and kinetics were studied via batch adsorption experiments and the adsorption mechanisms were investigated. Results showed that the equilibrium data for methylene blue adsorption onto VACFF-1300 and VACFF-1600 fitted well to the Langmuir isotherm model, with maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 256.1 mg/g and 325.8 mg/g, respectively. Besides, the adsorption kinetics study showed that the adsorption of methylene blue onto the two VACFF samples could be best described by the pseudo second-order model. Moreover, the intraparticle diffusion modelling showed that intraparticle diffusion is rate-controlling for both VACFF-1300 and VACFF-1600, and external diffusion is also a rate-controlling step for the latter.

The adsorptive properties of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) prepared from sugarcane bagasse (SB) for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution was investigated. Two batches of CMC, CTSB-CMC-B1 and CTSB-CMC-B2, were prepared from chlorite treated sugarcane bagasse (CTSB). The prepared CMCs were characterized by FT-IR spectral analysis. Degree of substitution (DS) value of prepared CMCs was estimated. Batch adsorption experiments show that the adsorption of MB on CMCs reaches equilibrium within 30 minutes. The MB adsorption capacity of CTSB-CMC-B1 and CTSB-CMC-B2 were found to be 652.0 and 369.0 mg g?1, respectively. CMC with the higher DS value (CTSBCMC- B1) shows higher adsorption capacity than the CMC having lower DS value (CTSB-CMC-B2). The uptake of MB was minimum at pH 2 and gradually increases with the increase of pH. From the desorption studies, it was found that large amount of MB was released in strong acidic (pH 3.0) conditions. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/dujs.v61i2.17069 Dhaka Univ. J. Adsorption separation of phenol from aqueous solution using activated carbon was investigated in this work. The adsorbent was prepared from coconut shell and activated by physical activation method. The coconut shell was first carbonized at 800°C under nitrogen atmosphere and activated by CO2 at the same temperature for one hour. The prepared activated carbon was characterized by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and BET Surface Analyzer and by the determination of iodine number as well as Boehm titration. The iodine number indicates the degree of relative activation of the adsorbent. The equilibrium adsorption isotherm phenol from aqueous solution was performed using liquid phase batch adsorption experiments. The effect of experimental parameters including solution pH, agitation time, particle size, temperature and initial concentration was investigated. The equilibrium data was analyzed using Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption model to describe the adsorption isotherm and estimate the adsorption isotherm parameters. The results indicate the potential use of the adsorbent for removal of phenol from the aqueous solution.Journal of Chemical Engineering, Vol. 29, No. 1, 2017: 9-13

Abstract In this work, sulfonated chitosan montmorillonite composite (S-CS-MT) beads were synthesized using a microwave irradiation method designed to have a better saving-time procedure. The potency of S-CS-MT as an adsorbent was assessed for the removal of cationic dyes such as methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solution. The batch adsorption experiments indicated that MB adsorption onto S-CS-MT follows the Pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum extent obtained from the Langmuir isotherm model for MB adsorption was 188.2 mg g− 1 at 303 K. The thermodynamic study indicated that the adsorption reaction is favorable and spontaneous. These findings indicated that montmorillonite chitosan grafted with the sulfonate group has the ability and efficacy as biohybrid adsorbent for the adsorption of cationic dyes.
