Maryland residents’ knowledge of environmental hazards and their health effects is limited, partly due to the absence of tools to map and visualize distribution of risk factors across sociodemographic groups. This study discusses the development of the Maryland EJSCREEN (MD EJSCREEN) tool by the National Center for Smart Growth in partnership with faculty at the University of Maryland School of Public Health. The tool assesses environmental justice risks similarly to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (USEPA) EJSCREEN tool and California’s tool, CalEnviroScreen 3.0. We discuss the architecture and functionality of the tool, indicators of importance, and how it compares to USEPA’s EJSCREEN and CalEnviroScreen. We demonstrate the use of MD EJSCREEN through a case study on Bladensburg, Maryland, a town in Prince George’s County (PG) with several environmental justice concerns including air pollution from traffic and a concrete plant. Comparison reveals that environmental and demographic indicators in MD EJSCREEN most closely resemble those in EPA EJSCREEN, while the scoring is most similar to CalEnviroScreen. Case study results show that Bladensburg has a Prince George’s environmental justice score of 0.99, and that National Air Toxics Assessment (NATA) air toxics cancer risk is concentrated in communities of color.

Although sustainability has become a strategic topic at many universities, working towards a learning approach in which sustainability is the fundament underlying and permeating the entire course is hardly straightforward. This paper is a case study on the development, the teaching, and the evaluation of one specific course that aims to achieve this. Based on (participant) observation, documents, and discussion with students and other stakeholders, we describe and analyze the results of the transformation of the course ‘advanced management accounting techniques’ for Masters students at the University of Groningen, in the academic year 2017–2018. We show how the course was transformed in a way to increase both a general, a business, and an accounting awareness of the importance of sustainability, while also applying a new teaching approach, namely lemniscate learning, to support this. Our course was the first in the faculty to make this transformation, and although the majority of the students were enthusiastic, the faculty staff was cautiously positive. In presenting our findings, we aim at supporting educators and other stakeholders at universities, by supplying a case study on the transformation of our course, and by scrutinizing the problems that we encountered, the feedback, both positive and negative, that we received, and the challenges that still face us, both on a course and a university level. Thus, we hope to be a source of inspiration and advice for others and to further advance our understanding of the dilemmas, practicalities, and challenges in working towards sustainability in teaching.

This study discusses how personal knowledge management in Jabodetabek urban community (stand for Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi) in Indonesia, as a multi-ethnic nation with a thick oral culture is facing the digital era. The urgency of this research is to be able to build awareness and managing knowledge effectively in society. This research uses quantitative approach with case study method. Data is collected using the Google-form questionnaire between January-July 2018. Respondents are determined by non-probability sampling methods, obtained 224 respondents. The findings show that the strategy of gaining knowledge is at the highest level, while knowledge sharing is at the lowest level. In addition, the community has not fully utilized knowledge in this digital era. They focus on knowledge about hobbies, entertainment, and health. It was concluded that individuals who, on average, were students and office workers, showed effectiveness of knowledge management that were not optimally integrated, thus hampering the development of knowledge itself. Ideally individuals actively share knowledge for mutual progress, Jabodetabek communities are still passive, and sharing knowledge in close environment that are related to school or office assignments. This issue can be developed using a qualitative approach in order to gain deeper understanding of personal knowledge management from cultural perspective.

To achieve the research objectives, the researcher used the descriptive and analytical approach, relying on the questionnaire as the main tool for collecting research data. The research was applied to a sample consisting of (142) workers and those in charge of the educational process at Al-Balqa Applied University, who were chosen randomly. Among the most prominent results of this research is that there is an effect of knowledge management on higher education quality at Al-Balqa Applied University at the significance level (α= 0.05). As the results showed, one of the essential practices of knowledge innovation and creativity is that knowledge management encourages brainstorming to create new ideas and reveal tacit knowledge. One of the most important practices of applying the knowledge is that the university conducts tests on knowledge before applying it, while the essential practice of storing and distributing knowledge is that the university has many methods and means used to preserve knowledge. In light of the study results, the research recommends the need to pay attention to those in charge of the educational process and those working in it, support them and develop their capabilities, and work to implement the knowledge that it possesses through a specialized work team, and the necessity for the knowledge management to work on developing the creative vision of the employees at the university.   Received: 3 November 2020 / Accepted: 3 January 2021 / Published: 17 January 2021

The present work aims to propose a model of knowledge management for agricultural teaching based on ontologies. Through identification of the business model, business processes, intellectual capital and ontologies, the relationships between each of the parts of the model are described, and the technological elements that support it are presented. From the point of view of knowledge management and ontologies, the model that guides the innovative university is developed, where Santa Lucía Campus of the Universidad Politécnica Territorial de Mérida (UPTM) is the case study. This model describes the elements that define the knowledge of an Agricultural Production Unit from the university, so that it can incorporate the know-how of knowledge management and collaborative learning articulated with ICT applied to educational-productive management in the agricultural sector. Ontology is used as the main mechanism to represent knowledge, defining within a context or domain the meaning of the terms and their relationships. Through the model the technological bases and knowledge necessary in the teaching of agriculture in a university nucleus are structured. Keywords: Ontology, Knowledge Management, Agro-business, Business Model.

Readiness for change is currently one of the most critical challenges that universities, and the people managing them, face today. The effect of this is a significant rise in the demand for financial and nonfinancial information about the management processes of universities. In this context, a suitably adapted management accounting system whose task is to provide such details becomes the fundamental element necessary for the effective management of the university. The article aims to analyze the suitability of the management accounting system for the management of a higher education system on the example of the solution applied at the University of Lodz. Five qualitative research methods were used for its implementation: a literature analysis, participant observation, free interviews, structured interviews, and a case study. The article presents the key users’ opinions of the system on its usefulness in daily work, and it enumerates the benefits obtained by the University of Łódź thanks to the use of the system. It allowed us to formulate a conclusion about the applicability of this solution as an example of the creation of similar management accounting systems in other universities.
