A diet questionnaire was developed in association with a computer program to provide rapid nutritional feedback to the general public. The questionnaire was validated against 16 d of weighed diet records and biochemical variables in blood and urine. The highest Pearson correlation coefficients obtained between the questionnaire and the weighed records were for alcohol, fibre, iron, riboflavin (r 0.74, 0.67, 0.66, 0.66 respectively). Striking sex differences were shown in the results; the trend for higher correlations persisted in females. At least 65% of subjects were classified by questionnaire to within one quintile of the classification by weighed record for the majority of nutrients.

In 1996, the Mongolian Government pledged to eliminate iodine deficiency disorders by 2001 using salt iodization as its primary strategy. Iodine content in salt was set at 50 ±10 PPM based on an assumption of 5g of daily salt intake. In 1998, the authors suspected that salt intake was more than 5 g and that pregnant women consumed more salt than non-pregnant women. Over 1,600 adults of both sexes were studied in five provinces. In this study we estimated salt intake based on urinary excretion of sodium and creatinine. A formula was used to calculate salt intake from excreted volumes of sodium and creatinine. Average values for pregnant women, non-pregnant women, and men, were found to be 15.6g (n=499), 12.6 g (n=598), and 14.6 g (n=571), respectively. We concluded that appropriate iodine content in salt should range from 20 to 40 PPM. It is recommended that health education regarding proper levels of salt intake be carried out with the general public, with emphasis on pregnant women. Asia Pac J Public Health 2000;12(1):27-31

Abstract This paper recognizes the need to promote health literacy as the goal of health education for all, at all educational levels. It particularly explores the meaning of health literacy, based on the literature and seeks to put forward a new meaning, applicable for the general public with further considerations for healthcare professionals. The vision and scope of health literacy is promoted as the goal for health education, reflecting on a comparison with scientific literacy (SL) and science education. A model is proposed interrelating health education, health literacy, science education and science literacy and discusses areas where health literacy is seen as having attributes beyond SL. A revised definition of health literacy is proposed.

This article describes a unique two-part health education project that took place in Calgary, Alberta, with and for the general public. In Part I, adults were asked in focus-group discussions what they wanted to learn about health. Part II involved organizing and offering health education sessions in various communities around the city. The project evolved into a community-university partnership, based on strong interest and support from community groups. Analysis of the project raised major questions, including ethical questions, about the application of a revenue-generation model to health-related continuing education for the general public. The author advocates a return to meaningful public participation for health-related learning.
