On a broader scale, to emphasize that education cannot be separated from hermeneutics, we can ask why in the history of the development of Islamic education in Indonesia there is a heterogeneity of educational institutions, there are pesantren, schools, madrasas, and other non-formal institutions. This is nothing but the result of interpretation. This interpretation continues to develop into fundamental matters influenced by ideological, economic, and political factors, thus giving birth to visions, missions, objectives, and curricula that are relatively different even though the institutions are the same. Nowadays we encounter many schools with different visions, missions, and goals from one school to another. Likewise with pesantren, madrasah, and universities.

There have been a lot of studies on the history and development of Islamic education in Indonesia conducted by various groups. At least, there are three important aspects that should be noted in this study. First, from the aspect of the region, the history of Islamic education in South Sumatera which has never been comprehensively studied since the colonial era. Second, related to theoretical assumption, the question of whether the development of the system and the modern Islamic institution in Palembang during colonial era tend to be dominated by Muslim reformers or Muslim traditionalists. Third, from the point of view of methodology which tends to be descriptive and chronological, though recently there arises an analytical approach in which the system and the institution are not seen as things that can stand on their own, but are attached to social, religious, cultural, and political aspects. It is this approach which will be used in this study. Therefore, this study will try to look into the relationship between various social changes in Palembang and the system and Islamic educational institutions in the colonial era.

This article is an extract from my dissertation which offers a historiography of the Dayah, Aceh’s traditional institution of Islamic education and picks up at the point of Aceh’s history where its Dutch colonial experience began. The section presented here details some of the theological, philosophical and political factors that contributed to the development of the regions current variety of educational institutions. However, despite the effects of such historical and ongoing developments, that continue to inform the theological understanding and social concerns of Aceh’s ulama, the Dayah still manages to represent a distinct Muslim identity that express the richest cultural heritages of the region within an orthodox religious framework. Therefore, the Dayah of Aceh continues the traditional Islamic educational experience for the Muslims of the region despite the historical and ongoing influence of cultural, political and social developments.

In the global socio-political situation today, where rigid, extreme and radical interpretations of religion are commonly found and widespread, the contribution of Indonesian post-graduate education, especially Islamic higher education, come to the front stage and become a topic of serious discussion. In term of education in Indonesia, there is an unavoidable fact that Islamic education including Islamic higher education is not a new phenomenon.

This article aims to export the History of Islamic Education which has lasted approximately 14 centuriesago, that is, since the prophet Muhammad was sent to be an apostle. Initially education took place simply, with the mosque as the center of the learning process, the Koran and Hadith as the main curriculum of theProphet himself acted as a teacher in the education process, but after the Prophet's death Islam continuedto develop to the end of the Arabian peninsula. Islamic educational institutions are very important inachieving the success of the education process, because the institution functions as a mediator inregulating the course of the educational process. Nowadays it seems that education cannot be called ifthere is no institution. Because education plays a central role in Islam. Science becomes the backbone ofIslamic teachings. More than 800 verses of the Qur’an mention, allude or discuss the importance of science.Just a comparison, only 90 Qur'anic verses discuss fiqh or Islamic jurisprudence. Islamic education, is veryclosely related to educational institutions because an Islamic education has an institution that helps.Islamic educational institutions are a place or place where the process of Islamic education takes placesimultaneously with the process of civilization, and it starts from the family environment.
