The aim of the study was to analyse the genotypic and environmental variation in yield, as well as the structure of the yield of tubers of medium-early cultivars of edible potato. The field study was carried out in the years 2015-2019 at the experimental station in Prusy near Krakow (50o07ʼN, 20o05ʼE) on chernozem. The following five potato cultivars were evaluated: Finezja, Oberon, Laskara, Satina and Tajfun. The total and commercial yield of tubers, the average tuber mass, the quantity of tubers from a plant, as well as the share of the fraction of large, commercial and small tubers were determined in the study. Of the potato features that were evaluated, the share of the commercial tuber fraction was the most stable. A low diversity was also found in the case of total and commercial yield of tubers, whereas the share of the fraction of small tubers was the least stable feature. The size of yields and their structure were determined mostly by environmental factors. Only in the case of the share of fractions of large and small tubers were the varietal properties more decisive than the genotypic-environmental interaction. The conducted cluster analysis identified two groups of cultivars: first—with a high yielding potential, substantial average tuber mass, a substantial share of commercial and large tubers; and second—with significantly lower tuber mass, substantial quantity of set tubers, particularly the fine ones with a simultaneous small share of large tubers.

The article is devoted to the study of the effect of varietal and environmental factors on the variability of morphometric (seed length, endosperm and germ) parameters of carrot seeds. The objects for the study were the original seeds of different varieties grown in 2015, 2016 and 2017. Seeds obtained from two varieties of carrots over the years of research differed significantly in the length of the seeds (P <0.001). The length of the endosperm varieties Boyarynya on average over the years of research was less (P <0.001) compared with Shantane 2461. The experiments were conducted in 2015-2017 at the West Siberian Vegetable Experimental Station in the southern part of the Pervomaisky district of the Altai region. The prevailing soils are leached and ordinary chernozems. Experiment replication is 3, each repeatability consists at least 20 seeds. The measurement of the length of the seed and the endosperm was carried out with Vernier caliper (GOST 166-89), the length of the embryo was determined using microscope Mikromed and video-ocular DCM 300 MD. Seeds were soaked in 14% aqueous sodium hypochlorite solution for 1 h, and then measured the length of the seed, the endosperm and the embryo, and calculated the ratio of the length of the embryo (E) to the length of the endosperm (S). Embryo length was also significantly different (P <0.001) depending on the variety. The environmental factor had a significant impact on the length of the seed (P = 0.005) and endosperm (P = 0.003). The length of the embryo was mainly affected by the factor of the variety (P <0.001). The ratio of the embryo length to the endosperm length was largely influenced by the factor of the variety (P = 0.006). Our studies have shown that the variability of the morphometric parameters of seeds is due to both the influence of the variety and the conditions of the year of reproduction. In comparison with other elements of the seed, the embryo length varies more and depends more on the influence of the hereditary factor. This allows us to conclude about the possibility of a selection change in linear as well as relative sizes of the morphological elements of the seed.

The evaluation of the effects of environmental factors on natural communities has been one of the principal approaches in ecology; although, over the past decade, increasing importance has been given to spatial factors. In this context, we evaluated the relative importance of environmental and spatial factors for the structuring of the local odonate communities in preserved and altered streams. Adult Odonata were sampled in 98 streams in eastern Amazonia, Brazil. The physical features of each stream were evaluated and spatial variables were generated. Only environmental factors accounted for the variation in the Odonata community. The same pattern was observed in the suborder Zygoptera. For Anisoptera, environmental factors alone affect the variation in the community, considering all the environments together, and the altered areas on their own. As the two Odonata suborders presented distinct responses to environmental factors, this partitioning may contribute to an improvement in the precision of studies in biomonitoring. We thus suggest that studies would have a greater explanatory potential if additional variables are included, related to biotic interactions (e.g., competition). This will require further investigation on a finer scale of environmental variation to determine how the Odonata fauna of Amazonian streams behaves under this analytical perspective.

Secondary dormancy is the major reason for seed persistence of canola (Brassica napus L.) in the soil. Volunteers emerging from the soil seed bank can lead to unwanted gene dispersal. More than 40 B. napus canola cultivars were tested for secondary dormancy under laboratory conditions. All cultivars were classified into groups of low, medium, and high dormancy by performing a cluster analysis. The results suggest that secondary dormancy is a cultivar-specific trait. Additionally, inter-year variation in dormancy indicates that it seems to be influenced by a set of environmental factors. Among years, classification of cultivars based on relative rank was more robust than classification based on absolute dormancy values. The classification of cultivars by their dormancy level would allow farmers to select and grow low-dormancy cultivars. Knowledge about the relative secondary dormancy of the currently grown cultivars could help growers and breeders lower canola seed bank persistence. Key words: Brassica napus, cluster analysis, genotype, secondary dormancy, soil seed bank

A field study conducted at two sites over 3 yr determined that malting quality in barley was influenced largely by environmental and genetic (genotype) factors. Fertility management had a lesser effect, with N fertilizer application having the largest component effect. Results suggest that producers will be limited in their management options when striving for optimal malting quality in barley. Key words: Malting barley, fertilizer management, interactions

In order to assess phytoplankton dynamics in the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, bimonthly sampling was done at six stations from March 1996 to February 1997. Salinity showed wide ranges so the year could be divided in four seasons. Higher salinities were related to higher phytoplankton density, while lower salinities were related to lower phytoplankton densities and increased species richness. 224 taxa were recorded, and the general trend was towards a low diversity with a few dominant species, and most of them rare. Cyanophytes showed the highest abundances all year. Salinity, turbidity and orthophosphates were the environmental factors best related to the biotic data. Seasonal changes in phytoplankton concerning to meteorological conditions, fresh and tidal floods and dredging of Clarín canal are discussed.

The article describes the differentiation of collection samples of marigold at Experimental station of medicinal plants using cluster analysis as to sixteen components of the group of flavonoids, highlighted with high performance liquid chromatogram. The selected six clusters, which are characterized by the complex of economically valuable sings: plant height, diameter of the bush, productivity of plants by dry inflorescences and seeds, weight of 1000 seeds, vegetation period and the content of total flavonoids. We developed and presented numerical score for each of these sings of the six clusters. According to the results of the integrated valuation we found the highest amount of points at the samples of cluster 5, which was 35 points. The selected varieties of marigold of the fifth cluster such as Radio, Berezotits’ka sonyachna, Oranzhevyy blysk, and a sample Co-12-115 were found to be promising for future use in the selection process.

Abstract. Moualki N, Boukrouma N. 2021. The influence of environmental factors on the distribution and composition of plant species in Oued Charef dam, North East of Algeria. Biodiversitas 22: 346-353. Identification of the primary factors that influence the ecological distribution of species groups is important to managers of Oued Charef dam in northern Algeria. This study aimed to identify main ecological species groups, describe the site conditions associated with these species groups, and the relationships between environmental factors and the distribution of ecological species groups using Ward’s cluster analysis for classification and principal component analysis (PCA). For this purpose, 50 plots (200 m2 each) were sampled using the Braun- Blanquet method. Soil samples were collected and analyzed to study soil properties. Multivariate analysis methods were used to classify and determine the relationship between species composition and environmental factors and to recognize ecological species groups. The R i386 (version 4.0.3) software was used for data analyzing. Ward's cluster analysis when applied on terrestrial species data gives three groups distinctly distributed on ordination plan. In cluster groups of terrestrial species Group (1) is dominated by Daisies chrysanthemum, Group (2) by Cynodon dactylon L, and Group (3) dominated by Fumana thymifolia. The groups of terrestrial species are readily superimposed on PCA ordination plane. The most important environmental factors associated with terrestrial species composition in Oued Charef dam communities were conductivity (EC), FSA, FSI, clay, salinity, phosphorus (PO4), TN (nitrogen), nitrates (NO3), and nitrites (NO2). While among the edaphic factors only pH showed a negative correlation to plant species this may due to the anthropogenic disturbances however further studies are needed to explore the rest of parts of the said regions. This study gives important insights on ecological relationships between plant biodiversity and soil chemical in a primary wetland ecosystem in northeast of Algeria.
