The purpose of this research is to understand and explain the discourse and practice of commodifying the usada Bali and negotiating the balian atmosphere in relation to economic interests. The method used is critical ethnography with qualitative analysis. This study found that the practice of commodifying usada Bali by balian was done by manipulating cultural capital, symbolic capital, and economic capital in the domains and dynamics of the habitus of usada Bali treatment to achieve economic goals. In medical practice, the balian people conduct negotiations in the gymnasium as a professional code of ethics in the midst of increasingly tighter competition in medical services. The findings of this study reflect the occurrence of mutual transformation in the practice of Balinese usada medicine due to the hegemony of modernity.

Mining in Mawar Hamlet, Kumbang Village, Pelangi District, Pasuruan Regency is a type of illegal mining, but mining activities have been carried out since 1984 until now. Griya, Puri, and Jero are terms specifically used to name the dwellings of Balinese aristocrats, namely brahmana, ksatrya, and wesia. These three groups of people are the highest group of citizens in the social structure of traditional Balinese society, also called tri wangsa. This study aims to uncover the identity struggle with the use of the names of the residential groups of citizens of the tri wangsa or the Balinese aristocracy into the names of today's housing developed by developers in Bali. This qualitative study with an interpretive descriptive approach uses Bourdieu's structural generative theory and Foucault's knowledge-power relations in the analysis of primary data obtained from the field, and interviews with informants determined by purposive sampling and secondary data based. Data collection was carried out through literature study and interviews. The study's findings show that in Foucault's view, the use of the names of the traditional Balinese aristocrats' dwellings is a new articulation that has articulated an earlier truth claim that has been established for about six centuries. It is also inseparable from the struggle for economic capital, cultural capital, social capital, and especially symbolic capital. The struggle of various capital in Bourdieu's perspective with its various forms of conversion also becomes a struggle for identity in the field of social struggle through the realm of residential society in Bali today.

This article intends to point up characteristics shared by societies in which honour still retains a major social significance. These affinities must obviously not be regarded as cultural constants but rather as ‘family resemblances’ between analogous yet distinct socio-cultural phenomena. Unlike most authors who represent honour as the expression of specific moral values or religious belonging, this article endeavours to highlight the importance of transactional and interactional social aspects that characterise the ongoing rivalries, tensions and conflicts between groups and individuals with a view to confirm their own status, prestige and reputation. Under this aspect, the struggle for the recognition and permanent management of one’s own social standing or class-belonging becomes crucial, not least because status, prestige and reputation ultimately grant easier access to economic resources. Symbolic capital grounded in honour can be turned into economic capital, while loss of honour may lead to being excluded from activities that guarantee forms of prosperity, albeit limited. This point of view allows explaining phenomena deemed criminal, such as ‘honour killings’, while avoiding any ethnocentric prejudice.

This paper uses Bourdieu’s model of the three forms of capital — economic capital, social capital and cultural capital — to explore the complex relationship between the spiritual and temporal spheres described in medieval hagiographical texts. It focuses on the vita of Hugh of Avalon, Bishop of Lincoln, composed in the early thirteenth century during a period of important procedural developments in the process of papal canonization. This paper argues that the two necessary prerequisites for canonization by the beginning of the thirteenth century, namely miracles and sanctity of life, can be analysed as forms of symbolic capital, which could be transformed into material goods through the mechanism of divine providence. Thus sanctity — in particular, a reputation for ascetic behaviour — was not merely a form of capital: it was also the mechanism through which one form of capital could be transformed into another.

Place branding is a network of associations in the consumer’s mind, based on the visual, verbal, and behavioral expression of a place. Food can be an important tool to summarize it as it is part of the culture of a city and its symbolic capital. Food is imaginary, a ritual and a social construction. This paper aims to explore a ritual that has turned into one of the brands of Lisbon in the past few years. The fresh sardines barbecued out of doors, during Saint Anthony’s festival, has become a symbol that can be found on t-shirts, magnets and all kinds of souvenirs. Over the year, tourists can buy sardine shaped objects in very cheap stores to luxurious shops. There is even a whole boutique dedicated to the fish: “The Fantastic World of Portuguese Sardines” and an annual competition promoted by the city council to choose the five most emblematic designs of sardines. In order to analyze the Sardine phenomenon from a city branding point of view, the objective of this paper is to comprehend what associations are made by foreigners when they are outside of Lisbon. As a methodological procedure five design sardines, were used of last year to questioning to which city they relate them in interviews carried in Madrid, Lyon, Rome and London. Upon completion of the analysis, the results of the city branding strategy adopted by the city council to promote the sardines as the official symbol of Lisbon is seen as a Folkmarketing action. The effects are positive, but still quite local. On the other hand, significant participation of the Lisbon´s dwellers in the Sardine Contest was observed, which seems to be a good way to promote the city identity and pride in their best ambassador: the citizens.
