OBJECTIVES: To compare the impact of traditional classroom-based teaching versus online teaching on the academics and attendance of male as compared to female students  METHODOLOGY: A study was conducted on 51 third year BDS students, College of Dentistry, Sharif Medical and Dental College, Lahore. An aggregate of the scores based on weightage assigned to each test for all the assessments conducted in the regular session and online session was formulated. The attendance record of the months taught in both the sessions was also taken as percentages. Fisher Exact test was used to find the statistical association between the level of academic performance as well as attendance in the regular session and online session with gender of the students. Man Whitney U test was used to find the statistical difference in the scores of assessments in the regular as well as online session of male and female students. RESULTS: There was a significant association between gender and academic performance in the online session (p=0.002).  Gender and academic performance of students during the traditional classroom-based teaching session had a significant association (p=0.001). The attendance of male and female students was found to be significantly associated with the online teaching system (p=0.009).   CONCLUSION: It was observed that females had an overall better academic performance in the online teaching as well as traditional classroom-based teaching system. A similar trend was observed in attendance also, where the females had better attendance record in online and traditional classroom-based teaching set up.

ABSTRACT Introduction: On Aug. 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall along the Gulf Coast of the United States, resulting in the evacuation of more than 1.5 million people, including nearly 6000 physicians. This article examines the relocation patterns of physicians following the storm, determines the impact that the disaster had on their lives and practices, and identifies lessons learned. Methods: An Internet-based survey was conducted among licensed physicians reporting addresses within Federal Emergency Management Agency-designated disaster zones in Louisiana and Mississippi. Descriptive data analysis was used to describe respondent characteristics. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to identify the factors associated with physician nonreturn to original practice. For those remaining relocated out of state, bivariate analysis with x2 or Fisher exact test was used to determine factors associated with plans to return to original practice. Results: A total of 312 eligible responses were collected. Among disaster zone respondents, 85.6 percent lived in Louisiana and 14.4 percent resided in Mississippi before the hurricane struck. By spring 2006, 75.6 percent (n = 236) of the respondents had returned to their original homes, whereas 24.4 percent (n = 76) remained displaced. Factors associated with nonreturn to original employment included family or general medicine practice (OR 0.42, 95 percent CI 0.17–1.04; P = .059) and severe or complete damage to the workplace (OR 0.24, 95 percent CI 0.13–0.42; P < .001). Conclusions: A sizeable proportion of physicians remain displaced after Hurricane Katrina, along with a lasting decrease in the number of physicians serving in the areas affected by the disaster. Programs designed to address identified physician needs in the aftermath of the storm may give confidence to displaced physicians to return.

<p>This study aimed to identify the Emotional intelligence differences between the normal, the<br />blind and the deaf in a Jordanian sample, in addition to the impact of the gender and type of<br />disability on the level of the emotional intelligence. The sample of the study consisted of 150<br />male and female students who are normal, deaf and blind in the adolescence. The researcher<br />collected data using Bar-On Emotional intelligence scale which is developed by Alia<br />Al-Oweidi and it is consisted of 60items distributed into six domains. Results showed the<br />highest mean of emotional intelligence level was for the normal students, the deaf and the<br />blind respectively. The results also showed that there were statistical significant differences<br />attributed to the type of the disability variable but there were no statistical significant<br />differences attributed to the gender variable.</p>

This study investigated sleep deprivation and academic performance on nursing students of University of Calabar. A self-structured instrument was administered to a sample of 109 students. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 20.0. Most, 55(50.5. %) of the respondents start depriving themselves of sleep immediately after resumption. On school days, most 53 (48.6%) respondents sleep for 1&ndash;3 hours on average; while 40(36.7%) respondents sleep for 4&ndash;6 hours on average. During weekends most, 69(63.3%) respondents sleep for 4-6 hours on average, however, during examinations, majority 73(67. %), sleep for 1&ndash;3 hours on average. 64(58.6%) take different substances to keep awake. More male 69(63.3%) respondents start depriving themselves of sleep immediately after resumption, as against 50(46%) female respondents. Male students have an average sleep of 5.02 hours during schools days; 5.07 hours during weekends, and 2.39 hours during examinations, while female students have an average sleep of 5.25 hours during schools days, 5.43 hours during weekends, and 4.77 hours during examinations. Male students have a lower mean (SD) hours of sleep of (4.16&plusmn;.35) compared to female students mean (SD) hours of (5.15&plusmn;.49). The result further showed a statistically significant relationship between sleep deprivation and academic performance, also, a statistically significant influence of sleep deprivation on academic performance of male and female nursing students. Recommendations: nursing students should be properly counseled on the importance of adequate sleep to their academic performance. They should only deprive themselves of sleep during school days and less during examination.

BACKGROUND Pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) causes high maternal morbidity and mortality worldwide. This study aims to assess the impact of PIH on fetal growth according to gestational age in preterm deliveries.METHODS A prospective cohort study using secondary data was undertaken in Ende District, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia from September 2014 to August 2015. The t-test was performed to compare mean birth weight based on gestational week between normotensive and PIH women, continued by linear regression. The chi-square or Fisher exact test was also conducted to determine the probability of birthing small for the gestational age (SGA) and large for gestational age (LGA) babies between normotensive and PIH women.RESULTS A total of 1,673 deliveries were recorded in Ende Hospital over the 1-year study period, among which 182 cases involved preterm births. The PIH group had lower birth weight than normotensive women at each gestational age starting from 32–35 weeks (p=0.004; 95% CI 150.84–771.36). Normotensive women at gestational ages of 32 (p=0.05; 95% CI 0.01–0.83), 34 (p=0.37; 95% CI 0.01–4.12), and 36 (p=0.31; 95% CI 0.02–2.95) weeks had a lower risk of birthing SGA babies than PIH women; LGA babies were recorded at gestational ages of 33 (p=1.00; 95% CI 0.07–37.73) and 35 (p=0.31; 95% CI 0.34–63.07) weeks.CONCLUSIONS Poor perfusion of the uteroplacental is one of the reasons behind intrauterine growth restriction, which results in SGA babies born to PIH women.

The lockdown situation has hampered the learning processes to a large extent across the globe. Many educational institutes promptly adapted to the situation and moved towards online learning, and many found constraints in this sudden migration. The purpose of the chapter is to identify the impact of a pandemic on the ongoing educational activities and how these activities were carried out with the help of technology-based solutions. A comparative analysis of the traditional and modern methods of teaching-learning has been carried out to check their suitability during the pandemic time. The significance of this chapter is to describe an integrative approach of continuing online teaching-learning activities throughout the lockdown time by establishing the connection between the online teaching-learning process and the traditional classroom-based methods. The challenges offered by the online environment have been outlined from the perspective of both the educational institutes and the learners.

Academic performance disparities among the gender of students are the cause of concern. Numerous explanations for academic performance disparities, especially in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and Arts subjects between male and female students, are established in many countries. However, similar studies in Bhutan, especially at the tertiary education level, are scant. Therefore, this study mainly assessed i) students’ perception of STEM and Arts subjects, ii) compared male and female academic performance in STEM and Arts subjects, and iii) studied students' perception of the factors affecting their academic performance. Data were collected from 265 students of four constituent colleges (two Science and Arts colleges each) of the Royal University of Bhutan using semi-structured questionnaires. A multistage sampling (comprising a mixture of purposive and random) was employed. The research used a quantitative approach with descriptive and inferential statistics (Chi-square, t-tests, and binary logistic regressions). The result showed no significant association between students’ gender and their choice of subjects. At Science colleges, female students outperformed male students. In contrast, there were no significant differences in the performance of male and female students at Arts Colleges. Overall, females (71.63 ± 6.35) outperform male (69.57 ± 7.80) students. Hence, there are no stereotypes in STEM and Arts subjects among Bhutanese undergraduate students. However, future research could include parents and lecturers to gather their perspectives on STEM and Arts subjects. Variables, including study hours, communication skills, and Bhutanese Educational Policies, should also be thoroughly investigated as factors affecting students' academic performance

Latar Belakang: Body image adalah persepsi penampilan fisik diri sendiri. Mispersepsi berat badan pada remaja dapat menyebabkan rasa ketidakpuasan terhadap tubuh dan obesitas pada remaja. Jenis kelamin juga berperan dalam obesitas remaja dan body image. Remaja yang obes memiliki risiko penyakit tidak menular lebih besar dibandingkan remaja dengan berat badan normal. Maka dari itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat pengaruh body image dan jenis kelamin pada obesitas di remaja. Metode: Desain penelitian ini adalah observasional dengan pendekatan cross sectional. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada bulan November 2019 di SMK Negeri 9 Surakarta. Jumlah subjek dari penelitian ini sebanyak 57 siswa yang dipilih dengan cara two stage sampling. Body image dan obesitas dinilai melalui kuesioner MBSRQ-AS, Grafik IMT berdasarkan usia dan lingkar pinggang. Data yang telah terkumpul diolah dengan independent T-test, fisher exact test, uji regresi logistik dengan nilai signifikansi p <0,05. Hasil: Terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan dalam skor body image antara kelompok obesitas dan non obesitas (p = 0,006) dan rata - rata skor laki-laki lebih tinggi dibandingkan perempuan. Selain itu, laki – laki memiliki skor lebih tinggi dalam setiap aspek body image dibandingkan perempuan. Hubungan signifikan juga ditemukan antara body image dan obesitas (p = 0,045), dan jenis kelamin dengan obesitas (p = 0,009). Kesimpulan: Ada hubungan yang signifikan antara citra tubuh dan jenis kelamin dengan obesitas pada remaja dan skor citra tubuh berbeda secara signifikan antara kelompok obesitas dan non obesitas dan antara siswa pria dan wanita. Kata kunci: body image,obesitas, jenis kelamin, remaja   Abstract Background: Body image is a perception of our physical appearance. Weight misperception in adolescent lead to body dissatisfaction and obesity in adolescent. Gender also plays a role in adolescent obesity and body image. Obese adolescents have greater risk of non-communicable diseases than adolescents with normal weight. therefore, this research aims to discover body image and gender influence on adolescent obesity. Method: This study is an observational design with cross sectional approach. The study was conducted in November 2019 at SMK Negeri 9 Surakarta. The subjects were 57 sophomore that were chosen randomly with simple random sampling. Body image and obesity were measured using MBSRQ-AS questionnaire, BMI for Age Charts and waist circumference. Data was processed by independent T-test, fisher exact test, logistic regression test with significance value p <0.05. Results : There is a significant difference in body image scores between obese and non obese group (p = 0.006) and male students scored higher in every aspect of body image than female students. A significant relationship was found between body image and obesity (p=0,045), and gender with obesity (p = 0.009). Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between body image and gender with obesity in adolescents and body image scores differ significantly between obese and non obese group and between male and female students. Depression is a typical mental illness among students, particularly medical students, because of their extremely competitive learning environment. Depression negatively affect the cognitive abilities and consequently the academic performance of students later on their performance as a physician. This study aims to evaluate the association of depression with academic performance among final-year MBBS student of Rawalpindi Medical University. This may make available new opportunity to bring enhancement in academic performance of students. This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on final-year MBBS students of Rawalpindi Medical University in November 2019. Data was collected through Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale Revised-10 (CESD-R-10) and self-structured questionnaire which was designed to get information regarding demographic details and marks in last professional examination. Students suffering from any diagnosed physical and mental illness were excluded. Out of 335 students initially selected for study, 307 returned duly filled questionnaires so final sample size was 307. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS v.25.0. Various statistical tests including Independent sample t-test, chi-square test and Pearson’s correlation, and linear regression were applied to evaluate the study variables. Statistically significant and strong negative association was observed between depression and academic performance of students (p = 0.000 for independent sample t-test). For association’s direction and strength between depression and academic performance, Pearson’s correlation coefficient was -0.713 (p= 0.000). Difference in depression score between male and female students (p=0.015) and between boarders and non-boarders (p=0.000) was significant. Similarly, the difference of marks in last professional examination between boarders and non-boarders (p=0.000) was significant, however it was insignificant between male and female students (p=0.135). The simple linear regression model was valid with p-value of 0.000 for F test. Unstandardized regression Coefficient (B) was -10.74. R² was 0.51 (51%). Our study shows an overall high prevalence of depression among final year MBBS medical students, especially among boarders and female students. Significant and strong negative association between depression and academic performance is found, which means that increase in depression decreases the academic performance of students and vice versa. So, by applying suitable interventions for alleviation of depression we can improve academic performance of students.

The impact of metacognitive awareness on students’ performance has been examined in the present study. 900 students of grade X participated in the study.  Metacognitive awareness was measured using inventory, while performance of students was measured with the help of researcher made test in the subject of chemistry.  Results indicated that metacognitive awareness was significantly correlated with the performance of students.  The highly metacognitively aware science students performed well on the test.  Results further indicated that there was no significant difference in the metacognitive awareness of male and female students.

Educational institutions in Saudi Arabia extended e-learning until the third semester of the academic calendar to prevent the spread of COVID-19 infection and to achieve 70% inoculation for the Saudi population. This study assesses the impact of extended e-learning and other associated stressors on the emotional health of university students in Saudi Arabia. An online cross-sectional survey collected data between the months of January–March 2021. The emotional signs of stress were measured by using a subset of items from the COVID-19 Adolescent Symptom and Psychological Experience Questionnaire (CASPE). Data about demographic variables, educational characteristics and academic performance were also collected. A regression analysis was performed to determine predictors of emotional health. A total of 434 university students including females (63%) and males (37%) provided responses. One-third of students (33%) indicated that the COVID-19 pandemic and its resulting changes including online distance studies greatly influenced their daily lives in a negative way. The regression analysis demonstrated that female students and students with average academic performance had increased vulnerability to experience emotional signs of stress (p < 0.05). The factors ‘Not going to university’ and ‘Not having a routine life’ were significant predictors of stress responses (p < 0.01) and (p < 0.001) respectively. E-learning during the COVID-19 pandemic made it possible for students to complete their studies as per academic calendar; simultaneously, it increased the vulnerability to experience stress, particularly for female students and students with average academic performance. These findings imply that academic advising and counseling services should be more readily available during digital studies to support at risk students.
