The purpose of this paper is to find out the effect of using the Whatsapp messages on the English language. This is the age of social networking site. The researcher will discuss the effect of Whatsapp messages on English from a structure, grammar, punctuation, code language, symbol usage, emoticon usage, abbreviation, acronym, fusion, coinage of new words, vowel usage etc. The researcher sums-up and reports findings based on the data analysis and interpretation. Along with this, the researcher also enunciates the favourable and adverse effects of Whatsapp messages on English.

Social networking sites are owned by a wide section of society and seem to dominate Web usage. Despite much research into this phenomenon, little systematic data is available. This article partially fills this gap with a pilot text analysis of one social networking site, Live Spaces. The text in 3,071 English language Live Spaces sites was monitored daily for six months and word frequency statistics calculated and compared with those from the British National Corpus. The results confirmed the existence of common domain-specific words and a marked personal focus. Unexpectedly, however, there was no evidence of an unusual degree of experimentation with new words or word spellings – perhaps this behaviour is limited to other social networking environments. Also surprising was the existence of a marked male gender bias in the most commonly used words. This was probably caused by a significant number of news-related discussions involving predominantly male politicians and other male public figures.

The history of English language has three periods of time; Old English, Middle English, and Modern English. The linguistic forms in English development are different each period. This research aims to find out one of the changes, that is, the affix changes from Middle English to Modern English form that found in both of The Miller’s Tale Story Middle English and Modern English versions. This research also aims to find out the spelling changes in affixes. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The data, which are the collection of words that have affixes found in The Miller’s Tale, were identified based on the base of the words and its affixes and its were classified based on the type of its functions. Based on data analysis, there are seven affixes in Middle English which have been changed in Modern English form. These changes occur in the deletion of vowel, change of vowel, substitution of the affix, and elimination of the affix. The spelling change also influenced the change in suffixes. Some of the vocabularies change into the new words and some of the words change only in its vowel.

RESUMO:Investiga-se, neste trabalho, o gênero digital emergente perfil pessoal em sites de relacionamento e o(s) propósito(s) comunicativo(s) mais recorrentes quando os sujeitos se propõem a utilizarem esse gênero. Adota-se, para tanto, uma perspectiva sociorretórica de análise de gênero, considerando que este tem dado, para o mundo digital, novo significado para as formas de relacionamento entre as pessoas, à medida que se apresente mediado pela Web. A principal base teórica está alicerçada no estudo dos gêneros do discurso por Bakhtin (2011), perspectivas sociorretóricas, por Miller (2012), definições de gêneros textuais e propósitos comunicativos, por Swales (1990 apud BIASI-RODRIGUES; BEZERRA, 2012) e Cavalcanti (2014), e as definições e funcionalidades do gênero em análise, por Leão (2015). Trata-se de uma pesquisa bibliográfica de abordagem qualitativa de análises de dados, em que foram selecionados dez perfis do badoo.com.br, dentre os quais cinco pertencentes ao ciclo de amizade do pesquisador e cinco de um perfil feminino fake criado por ele. Os resultados mostram que a construção de laços amizade é o propósito comunicativo mais recorrente e evidente quando os usuários procuram um diálogo como outros usuários no site de relacionamento estudado. Foi verificado ainda que o gênero em análise combina na mídia propósitos comunicativos mistos, entre uma realidade factual e virtual, além de ser um propósito voltado para promoção pessoal.  ABSTRACT:It is investigated, in this written work, the emerging digital genre personal profile at social networking websites and the communicative purpose more frequent when the subjects propose themselves to use this type of genre. It is adopted in this sense, a socio-rhetorical perspective of genre analysis, considering that this has given a new meaning to the forms of relationships between people to the digital world, as it is presented in a Web-mediated way. The main theoretical basis is based in the study of discourse genres, by Bakhtin (2011), socio-rhetorical perspective, by Miller (2012), definitions of textual genres and communicative purposes, by Swales (1990 apud BIASI-RODRIGUES; BEZERRA, 2012) and Cavalcanti (2014) and the definitions and functionalities of the genre under analysis, by Leão (2015). This is a bibliographic research of qualitative approach with data analysis, in which 10 badoo.com.br profiles were selected, among which five belonging to the researcher's circle of friends and five of a fake female profile, created by him. The results show that the building of friendship ties is the most frequent and obvious communicative purpose when the users look for a dialogue with others at the studied social networking site. It was also found that the analyzed genre combines mixed communicative purposes, between a factual and a virtual reality, besides being a purpose that aims at a personal promotion in its support.

The surge of new words and phrases accompanying the sudden COVID-19 outbreak has created new lexical and sociolinguistic changes that have become part of our lives. The emergence of COVID-19s coinages has remarkably increased to establish a trending base of global neologisms. The present study attempts to investigate the nature of the new English words and expressions that emerged in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis. It also identifies the type of word-formation processes that contributed to the emergence of these neologisms in the English language. The researchers compiled a corpus of 208 COVID-19-inspired neologisms from different sources, including social networking websites, search engines, blogs, and news articles. The analysis revealed that word-formation processes were so varied to cover all possible forms of derivation, including affixation, compounding, blending, clipping, acronyms, among others, along with dual word-formation processes, with compounding and blending being the most discrete. The findings showed that the flux of new terms demonstrates the creativity and vitality of the English language to respond to emerging situations in times of crisis. The study recommends that further research be carried out on the new terms that have been transferred to other languages as loanwords, loan-translations and loan-blends.

This case examines online posting activity by international students in Malaysia. The aim of the case is twofold, where it provides a platform for the students to practice their writing skills and a way to gather data for a bigger project, which is a research project into their English language learning experiences. The issues revolved around a string of decisions made before embarking on the case and challenges faced in running and maintaining the case. They are dissected and presented in two stages and two phases. Decisions were made and challenges were solved in line with the two aims of the case by considering extant literature and good research practice.

Discussion on teacher learning is often limited to a focus on formal professional development programmes. What and how teachers learn informally through their daily experiences is rarely explored. This research attempts to investigate how teachers engage in informal learning for their professional development when using Social Networking Site (SNS) technology. Data were generated using ethnographic approach whereby Facebook Timelines belonged to 22 English language teachers were observed for a period of six months. The analysis shows that the teachers frequently exchanged teaching related knowledge in their Timeline conversations and they received rich responses from both teaching and non-teaching Friends. This paper thus argues that social networking site, such as Facebook is a potential platform to engage teachers in informal learning for their professional development.

The aim of this study is to investigate how the African novelists have domesticated the English language to suit their environments, experience and purpose. Specifically, the literary pieces – The Last of the Strong Ones (Strong Ones), House of Symbols (symbols), Children of the Eagle (Children) and the Trafficked of Akachi Adimora-Ezeigbo were x-rayed. This exploration adopted the Hallidian Systemic Functional Linguistics, which highlights how language is used. The textual method of data analysis, the primary and secondary data collection methods were employed and the results showed that the African literary artists in general and the Igbo Nigerian novelists in particular have taken on a unique style of writing in the African vernacular style. For that reason, the speeches of the characters are laced with dignified local appositives, high profile Igbo songs and tales, studded local proverbs, lexical transfers, ritzy transliterations and so on; and these have given African rhythm to the English language. This notwithstanding, the aura, glamour and credibility of the English language as the medium of communication are retained.
