The stress represents an adaptation reaction of the human body to external or internal factors, with the tendency to restore its balance, the negative effects of the stress being related to the actions of catecholamine and cortisone, to the decline of the gamma interferon secretion and NK cells inhibition. The physical and mental/ emotional stress sustained during a professional activity (especially by medical staff) can lead to an overloading syndrome, named burnout syndrome, with 3 (three) phases: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and low personal fulfillment. Resilience represents the native resistance (or gained during the lifetime) of a person to physical or mental/emotional stress. The purpose of this research was to establish the effect of stress on the medical staff, especially ICU staff (Intensive Care Unit), and to study the resilience as protection against stress. Materials and methods. Using Maslach burnout questionnaire and the resilience scale – questionnaires applied to 300 subjects (ICU batch: 75 ICU physicians, 75 ICU nurses; the witness batch: 75 physicians of other specialities and 75 nurses of other specialities) from 11 hospitals in Bucharest, during the year 2015. Were used SPSS program, Pearson corelations, Anova test and the descriptive data analysis function for the information collected from the subjects. We could notice significant statistic differences between the four subcategories – as regarding the burnout scores for emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, professional fulfillment and resilience, with significance threshold less than 0,05. Conclusion. Resilience is lower in case of medical staff (physicians and nurses) with significant increases of emotional exhaustion scale and depersonalization scale of Maslach questionnaire; nurses are less affected by the difficulties of the activities within ICU sections comparing to ICU physicians regarding the professional stress degree, the results revealed that the less affected by the professional stress are the nurses of other specialities; resilience turned out to be a real buffer as regarding the professional stress; resident physicians (with low experience and a high stress vulnerability) are the most exposed to the harmful action of the burnout syndrome.

Objective: to verify the prevalence of symptoms of Burnout syndrome in physical therapists who teach at a public university in Belém-PA, using the Maslach questionnaire. Methods: This is a cross-sectional observational study carried out with 25 physiotherapists, professors at the State University of Pará in the city of Belém-PA. For data collection, the Maslach Questionnaire (Maslach Burnout Inventory) was used, composed of 22 statements about feelings and attitudes that encompass the three fundamental aspects of Burnout syndrome, divided into three scales of seven points, with a score from 0 to 6, related to emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and professional and personal fulfillment. All data were digitized and analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) program. Results: Regarding emotional exhaustion, 56% of teachers had a high level; 24% moderate and 20% low. The average was 25 points, indicating moderate emotional exhaustion. In depersonalization 44% had a high level; 20% moderate and 36% low, with an average at the threshold of the moderate to low level of 6.8 points. Regarding personal and professional fulfillment, 48% had a high level; 12% moderate and 40% low. The average was 38.12 points, at the threshold of the moderate to the low level. Conclusion: The sample presented a moderate level of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and professional and personal achievement, such data are suggestive for the development of Burnout Syndrome. Thus, the importance of carrying out more research is emphasized in order to expand knowledge and subsidize resolutive actions for the topic in question.

Abstract: Introduction: Multiprofessional health residents deal with high stress daily, harming patient care, which can cause emotional and interpersonal reactions that contribute to the development of Burnout Syndrome, thus disclosing the importance of identifying the at-risk conditions for the syndrome and possible protection. The objectives of this study were to describe the occurrence of burnout, its impairment dimensions and the association with sociodemographic characteristics in multiprofessional residency professionals. Method: This is a descriptive research with a quantitative approach, conducted with multiprofessional health residents from public hospitals located in a capital of the Midwest region of Brazil. The ISB - Burnout Syndrome Inventory - was employed, using six indices (Positive Organizational Conditions, Negative Organizational Conditions, Emotional Exhaustion, Emotional Distancing, Dehumanization and Professional Achievement), associated with the assessment of sociodemographic characteristics such as gender, marital status, profession, previous work, change of city, living alone, having children, getting another degree, enjoying what you do in your free time, practicing physical activity, having a religion, undergoing a therapeutic process. The logistic regression method was used to verify the association between these characteristics and the diagnosis of burnout syndrome. A total of 134 residents participated in the survey. Results: The results showed that Emotional Exhaustion is present in 91% of participants; Emotional Distance in 89.6%; Dehumanization, in 61.9%; Professional Achievement in 11.2%; Positive Organizational Conditions, in 85.1%; and Negative Organizational Conditions, n 82.1%. A positive association was observed between taking simultaneous courses, male gender and living alone. Conclusion: It is observed that the practice of therapy can reduce the chance of developing the syndrome and it is concluded that there is a high prevalence of burnout syndrome in the assessed group, with it being a response to stress defined by the presence of exhaustion, distancing and dehumanization. Despite these results, the perception of professional achievement remains independent of stress.

Social worker‘s professional activity has been analysed from different viewpoints: the complexity of professional activity in the socio-cultural context of Lithuania is reflected by a complex character of clients' problems, multiple dimensions of the empowerment process, the novelty and the status of the profession in the community, public culture, etc. Social work is included in the list of risk professions, therefore, new and innovative ways of professional support are sought with the aim of professional risk prevention. One of them is supervision, or a professional relations counselling service. The service was first provided in the field of social work, which reflects the world tradition. The article aims to disclose the risk of professional stress in the social work process by actualizing the prospect of the use of supervision. The article presents an analysis of the data of the representative qualitative research. The research findings revealed that the process of social work was complex and full of surprises and tensions. Therefore, the line between good self-regulation skills and a burnout syndrome was unpredictable. The stages of planning, testing, and the review of the outcomes were identified as the most difficult, because they required reflection skills. Continuous improvement of self-regulation skills was necessary, which was the function of supervision as a form of professional competence improvement. Supervision cannot substitute for the support provided by one‘s colleagues, administration, the closest environment, or a priest, however, it can help to restore harmony, to reflect on one‘s professional experience, to name and to reconsider the stages of the process, to express the feelings experienced in the past and being experienced in the present, and to name the tensions arising between the professional and personal identities in the situation of intervention.

Burnout syndrome is a complex phenomenon, of great magnitude, which occurs in extremely demanding professions emotionally and nervously, with deep echoes in the psychoaffective structure of individuals and making their mark on professional life and social life. In this context, the study presents the results of experimental research on burnout syndrome specific to medical staff: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, physical symptoms and personal satisfaction. The study sample consisted of 210 health workers who were divided into 3 categories: (1) depending on the type of care: doctors, residents and nurses; (2) depending on the type of services provided; (3) depending on gender. The results indicate that burnout syndrome is found in larger sizes in resident physicians relative to physicians and nurses, holding the highest values at all four scales of the burnout syndrome study inventory. The present research highlighted the prevalence of emotional exhaustion, physical symptoms and personal satisfaction among the medical staff of the psychiatric hospital, and on a depersonalization scale belong to the medical staff of the children's hospital, showing that men are more vulnerable to the development of burnout to women.

Introduction. The Burnout syndrom is a health issue that greatly disables a person. It includes emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduced efficiency in the workplace. So far, this issue has not been addressed where medical staff is concerned. Methods. The Maslach Burnout Inventory - Human Service Survey and Demografic Questionnaire were used. Emotional exhaustion is taken to be the most important aspect of the syndrome. Results. The sample consisted of data acquired from 59 nurses/technicians, out of which 45 were female and 14 male. 12% of them possessed all of the characteristics belonging to the syndrome, 27% of them were overextended (whereby the majority of them were inefficient), while the additional 10% were ineffective. There was a correlation between the chronic disease, on the one hand, and emotional exhaustion (p<0.000) and average ranks of exhaustion scale, on the other hand (p=0.006). Furthermore, there was a significant correlation between reduced efficiency in the workplace and chronic problems (p=0.006). Conclusion. The Burnout syndrome is a multidimensional issue. The method of perceiving the measured dimensions influence the obtained results. The data have shown that the majority of the respondents have some kind of problem concerning their job (burnout, being overextended or ineffective). Significant correlation between chronic disesases and emotional exhaustion underlines the need for further research to benefit the medical staff, as well as health system.

Medical staff is exposed to a complex of adverse occupational factors of physical, chemical, and biological nature, high severity and intensity of the labor process. Unsatisfactory working conditions are associated with health risks for medical personnel and can lead to occupational and work-related diseases. The most often occupational diseases detected in medical staff are infectious ones. In the context of the spread of the new coronavirus infection (COVID-19), the probability of infection of the medical personnel themselves with possible damage to organs and body systems with a subsequent disability is high. The article pays considerable attention to the high level of neuro-emotional stress, the problem of burnout, accompanying the work of medical personnel, especially in extreme conditions, which include epidemics and pandemics, in particular the COVID-19 pandemic. The prevalence of burnout syndrome (BS) among medical personnel in many countries has reached crisis proportions, exceeding the level of any other occupational group. Despite a significant number of studies related to the study of BS in medical personnel, there are still difficulties with its diagnosis, primarily associated with the subjectivity of the methods used; there is little scientific evidence about the clinical manifestations of BS, its symptoms. The study of the phenomenon of emotional burnout, its prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation is relevant in connection with the direct relationship of BS not only to maintaining the health, mental stability, and professional longevity of specialists involved in long-term interpersonal communication but also to the preservation of the patients’ health. It is necessary to discuss making additions to the list of occupational diseases and to the list of harmful and dangerous industrial factors and works in which preliminary and periodic medical examinations are carried out, concerning medical staff whose working conditions are associated with the high nervous and emotional stress, in particular during work in extreme conditions.

Summary The objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence of burnout syndrome in a sample of Spanish social workers and analyse the influence of a series of socio-demographic variables that may potentially be related to the appearance and development of one of the three dimensions of burnout. A total of 947 Spanish social workers participated in the study. Findings 33.2% and 22.1 of Spanish social workers experienced high levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalisation, and 54.2% experienced low personal accomplishment at work. The hierarchical regression analysis showed that having been on sick leave in the preceding year was the most important predictor of emotional exhaustion. Moreover, full-time employment status was the most robust predictor of depersonalisation, and professional activity in specialised social services was the main predictor of personal accomplishment. The low percentages of total variance explained imply that although certain socio-demographic characteristics are significant predictors, their effects are very small. Applications Public and private organisations devoted to social services should be aware of the need to prevent this type of psychosocial risk to which social workers are exposed every day. This would help improve the health and quality of their lives as well as reduce the high costs which frequent worker turnover and sick leave entail, and would also enhance the effectiveness of the services provided.
