В статье рассматривается актуальная проблема сохранения культурно-специфической лексики в литературных произведениях при переводе с русского языка на английский. Очевидно, что такая лексика в первую очередь представлена безэквивалентной лексикой, а именно реалиями культуры определенного народа, отражающими его языковую картину мира, формирующуюся на основе образа жизни и мышления, и не имеющими эквивалентов в другой культуре. Авторы литературных произведений часто прибегают к использованию культурно-национальной лексики для формирования определенного образа героев, описания исторического и культурного фона происходящих событий. Вследствие этого адекватная передача реалий и содержащейся в них культурно-специфической информации в литературном переводе становится важным аспектом сохранения культурной самобытности художественного произведения. Основной проблемой становится поиск адекватных средств и стратегий перевода реалий с учетом функционирования культурно-специфической лексики в структуре художественного произведения. Материалом для исследования послужил роман Гузели Яхиной «Зулейха открывает глаза» и его перевод на английский язык «Zuleikha», выполненный Лизой Хейден. Анализируемое произведение можно отнести к исторической прозе, так как в романе раскрываются закономерности общественной жизни, облик людей в их неповторимости, обусловленной описываемой эпохой, и реалии приобретают особую контекстуальную значимость. The article is devoted to the problem of preserving culture-specific vocabulary literary translation from Russian into English in fiction works. It is obvious, that such vocabulary is first of all represented by words with no direct equivalents in other languages and cultures, namely, culture-specific elements of the culture of a certain people, within its linguistic view of the world, which is formed on the basis of their lifestyle and way of thinking. Writers often resort to the use of culture-specific words to create a certain image of heroes and to describe the historical and cultural background of the events in the literary work. So, an adequate communication of these elements in literary translation becomes an important aspect of preserving the cultural identity of an author’s work. The main problem is to find adequate means and strategies for translating culture-bound vocabulary with the consideration of its functioning in the structure of a literary work. The material for the analysis was taken from the novel Zuleikha by Guzel Yakhina and its translation into English by Lisa Hayden. The novel under study can be referred to historical prose, since it describes objective laws of social life, unique image of people of the presented historical period, where culture-bound elements acquire specific contextual significance.

This essay studies the Cuban novel El Recurso del Método by the Cuban novelist Alejo Carpentier,precursor of the “marvelous realism” in the Americas from a comparative perspective of literary theories andnotions such as intertextuality, the cultural decolonization process, deterritorialization, literary and culturalhybridism and the search for cultural identity within the historical, social and political framework ofCarpentier’s literary rendering. Some fundamental notions about the historical evolution of comparativeliterature are dealt with to better comprehend the importance of Carpentier’s literary work, his contribution to agenuine Latin American identity as well as the inclusion of this peripheral literature into the world literature.Providing some examples of this literary device present in the novel, the origin and definition of the so-called“marvelous reality” are focused. The intertextual nature of Carpentier’s text and its carnavalized discourse, itshybrid features and the transcultural issues are outlined in this essay as well.

Given the importance of character in building strong human resources, the need for character education is carried out appropriately. It can be said that the formation of character is something that can not be separated from life. Therefore, care is needed by various parties, both by the government, the community, families and schools. Novels as a form of literary work are expected to bring up positive values for the audience so that they are sensitive to problems related to social life and encourage reading novels that can realize positive messages in the novel with good behavior in social life. When the world of education is considered to only pursue and prioritize the academic realm, so that it ignores moral issues and nobility. Literary work in the form of a novel entitled HSD by Tere Liye, seems to be a strategic intermediary for realizing the goal of instilling character education to students because in the novel contains values that must be straightened out.

In a literary work, two characters can be narrated as the attention center that contains the cultural identity from certain generation. Meanwhile, a symbol actually can cause an interaction within characters. This research discusses about cultural identity and symbolic interactionism reflected in a novel. There is a novel entitled “Recipe for a Perfect Wife” by Karma Brown that tells about two female characters that are represented as a housewife from different generation. This research uses descriptive qualitative as the research methodology and content  analysis as the method in analyzing the object of the research, a novel entitled “Recipe for a Perfect Wife”. This research also uses the intrinsic approach to analyze the characterization, plot, and setting. This research reveals two kinds of a housewife. They are a housewife and working woman, and a full-housewife. This research finds five cultural identities in the past and present time that is related with a housewife reflected by two female characters in the novel by using cultural identity theory by Stuart Hall. This research also reveals the symbol and memory even three concepts of symbolic interactionism that is mind, self, and society based on symbolic interactionism theory by George Herbert Mead.

Language is upstream for the literary work. In literature, language is not only a means of communication but also a means to express aestethic. To maintain the aestethic, theauthorusing several form connotative, emotive, and aesthetic language. A famous author in West Sumatra, Wisran Hadi, in his novel entitled Negeri Perempuan expresses language creativity in naming the characters. Each name of the character in the novel has themeaningwhich related to the character it represents. Moreover, it also associated with the background of the work of the cultural background of Minangkabau culture. “The Master and Margarita” is generally considered Mikhail Bulgakov’s literary masterpiece. It is a “melting pot” of literary genres, motives, themes, imagery and intertextual references. All these elements cooperate in creating a “polyphonic” novel, in Bakhtin’s sense of the word, not only when it comes to the different nature and “voice” of single characters but also with reference to the “poly-structured” construction of the text itself. The paper will illustrate the peculiarity of Bulgakov’s novel and the semiotic and semiosic character of his creation. The adjective “semiosic” derives from “semiosis” as defined, among others, by C.S. Peirce, who stresses the meaning-making “power” of some semiotic processes. The paper aims also at answering the question why this novel has been translated several times into Polish and Italian since 1967 (when the first edition of the novel was published in Western Europe). Due to the very specific construction of the plot and of the formal aspects of the novel, translators had to deal with a significant number of problems of “untranslatability” that they could solve only by using their creative potential. It was Roman Jakobson who through his linguistic analysis reached the conclusion that for the untranslatable—poetry for example—“Only creative transposition is possible”. Using creativity translators were also able to discover further interpretations of Bulgakov’s literary work and to perform a culture-formative act as their efforts offer new points of view on reality and its perception, wider knowledge of the social life not only in Soviet times but in a more universal perspective as well as new models of text and literariness. That’s why a novel like Bulgakov’s masterpiece has been translated so many times and it is still translated in the two languages selected for the purposes of this research and all over the world. And this is also the reason why it can be considered a meaning-generative and culture-formative text even if its first edition appeared in 1940.

The subject of this article is the problem of identity of the characters in the novel “In Search of the Primordial Land” by the regional Khanty writer Eremey Aipin. The goal is to describe the key vectors of reflections of the main characters on personal and national identity. The author aims to analyze the path of spiritual and social becoming, as well as finding true identity in the world and society of the protagonists of the novel — “man of the kin” Matvey Taishin and the hero “without kith or kin” Roman Romanov. The study leans on the interdisciplinary comprehensive approach, with the use of cultural-historical, typological, ethno-cultural, axiological and imagological methods of analysis. The scientific novelty lies in examination of the characters of the literary work from the perspective of their identity and identification. Analysis is conducted on the two ways of finding true identity by the characters in the small and big world. Path of “man of the kin” is the cognition of capabilities of staying in the world, strengthening of inviolable faith as the essential link in the chain of life, nature, Cosmos, and humanity. Path of the hero “without kith or kin” is a series of initiations (according to V. Y. Propp), as a result of which he gradually assimilates to the “earthly world”, having acquired the experience of merging with society. It is proven that solution of the questions on personal, social and national identity of the characters of the novel is interrelated with the author's traditionalistic worldview. The conclusion is made that in a crisis historical situation, the characters of the novel intuitively tilt towards ancient cultural memory of humanity, seeing its as a basis for reconstruction of identity.

The aim of this research is to show the implementation of literary works in literary translation by giving the way how to implement the literary work in revealing cultural terms found in a literary work, namely Achmad Tohari’s Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk Novel. Based on the literary work, the research on literary translation is done by investigating the translation procedure applied in translating the cultural terms from Indonesian into English. This research used a  descriptive qualitative method with content analysis technique done by taking the flow model followed by data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The analysis used a semantic approach and Peter Newmark’s translation procedures. Result of the research shown by implementing literary work, the research of literary translation reveals that there are 16 cultural terms and classified in 6 different categories, they are musical instruments, clothes, accessories, work and leisure, activities and procedures, and religious terms. In translating the novel, there are 7 translation procedures used by the translator, they are transference, naturalization, cultural equivalent, functional equivalent, descriptive equivalent, couplets, and notes.

Hornedo, a literature icon asserts that “A piece of literature documents the world and the worldview of its author.” Accordingly, some literary pieces can provide information on the socio-political and cultural background of a certain society. Anchored on this premise, this paper aimed to identify the aesthetics of satire in Merlinda Bobis’ Banana Heart Summer. It also sought to unveil the novel’s message and the author’s manner of criticizing the novel’s social setup. Specifically, it sought to describe the novel’s theme, tone, structure and style, as well as the socio-political and cultural aspects using food as primary trope. The paper also aimed to present the reality frame of the depicted societal problems of the Filipinos in general and those of Bicolanos in particular. The formalist theory was applied in the treatment of material, which is a satire, and being so, the researcher also applied defamiliarization theory, through devices such as tropes and social realism, as it forms part of the aesthetics of satire that can help identify the ideology behind the author’s work. The researcher grouped the identified satirical techniques into five: exaggeration, incongruity, parody, reversal, and defamiliarization.  In conclusion, this paper asserts that Bobis wrote the material for the readers to see the flaws of the society; alongside, she also implicitly offers a solution or presents the possibility of curing the social ills highlighted in the novel. Keywords—Literature, aesthetics of satire, defamiliarization, Banana heart summer, Bicolanos,  Filipinos,  formalist-contextual analysis, Philippines
