The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of verbal and illustrative representation of the same statistical problems experienced by 56 elementary school students. Students were evaluated on problem-solving skills through six statistical problems as presented in school textbooks. One week later, the students were re-evaluated on problem-solving skills using the same problems that had been illustratively and verbally represented by the researchers. At the same time, we examined the correlation of students' performance to the six given problems in relation to their reading comprehension, verbal and mathematical competence (based on teachers' grade assignment). From the results of the quantitative research method that was used, there was a statistically significant correlation between the verbal representations in a) two out of six problems related to the mean value calculation using α representational table format and b) a bar graph construction based on a representational table format. However, an important finding of the research was the high correlation between students' performance and their reading comprehension, verbal and mathematical competence. Keywords: Verbal representation of a problem, illustrative representation of a problem, statistics.

Students' understanding of concepts is a very important factor in the success of learning. But in reality, Indonesian students' conceptual understanding is still low. The factor of low understanding of students' concepts is because students are not actively involved in problem solving activities. Student involvement can be trained by using one of the communication tools in the form of interesting learning videos to get students' attention in learning activities. This research is a survey research as a first step in developing problem solving learning videos. The benefit of this research is to find out what students currently need in science learning and how much students need to develop problem solving based learning videos. The subjects used in this study were junior high school students with a sample size of 48 students selected based on a region. This needs analysis includes 4 indicators, namely a) analysis of learning problems; b) analysis of learners; c) analysis of objectives; d) analysis of settings. Based on the results of this study, information was obtained that the development of problem solving based learning videos was feasible to be developed as a science learning media to train students' conceptual understanding in the city of Pekanbaru

Abstract:. Problem solving is one of ways to develop higher order thinking skills. Strategy of problem solving that can be developed in mathematics learning is Polya's strategy. This study aims to analyze the problem solving difficulties of elementary school students based on Polya strategy. To support this research, descriptive analysis is used on seven elementary school students . The results show that, the difficulty of mathematical problems solving of elementary school students consist of the difficulty of understanding the problem, determining the mathematical formula/concepts that is used, making connections between mathematical concepts, and reviewing the correctness of answers with questions. These happened because the problem presented is in a story problem, that is rarely studied by the students. Students usually solve mathematical problems in a form of routine questions, which only require answers in a form of algorithmic calculations.
