AIM: To assess the antibacterial and antifungal potentials of different parts of Moringa oleifera plant using different extraction methods in attempts to formulate natural dental remedies from this plant.MATERIAL AND METHODS: Three solvents extracts (Ethanol, acetone, and ethyl acetate) of different parts of Egyptian Moringa tree were prepared and tested against oral pathogens: Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans, and Candida albicans using disc diffusion method; As well as to incorporate the plant extract to formulate experimental toothpaste and mouthwash.  The two dental remedies  were assessed against the same microbial strains. Statistical analysis was performed using One-Way ANOVA test to compare the inhibition zone diameter and t-test.RESULTS: Ethanol  extracts  as well as leaves extracts demonstrated the highest significant mean inhibition zone values (P ≤ 0.05) against Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus mutans growth. However, all extracts revealed no inhibition zone against Candida albicans. For dental remedies, experimental toothpaste exhibited higher mean inhibition than the mouthwash against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans and only the toothpaste revealed antifungal effect against Candida albicans.CONCLUSION: The different extracts of different parts of Moringa showed an antibacterial effect against Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus mutans growth. The novel toothpaste of ethanolic leaves extract has antimicrobial and antifungal potential effects all selected strains.

This study aimed to determine the antimicrobial activity and chemical compounds by phytochemical analysis of Actinodaphne glomerata leaves. The extraction was performed by maceration method using n-hexane solvent. The antimicrobial activity was tested by agar diffusion method against Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus. The n-hexane crude extracts was tested for its antimicrobial activity using 125, 250 and 500 μg/well of concentrations. Based on phytochemical analysis, it showed that n-hexane extract of A. glomerata leaves contained alkaloids, triterpenoid and carbohydrates. The extract inhibited all tested microorganisms and the best inhibition zone was shown against S. sobrinus (19.56 mm) at concentration 500 μg/well.

Different concentrations of ethanolic extracts of thyme (Zataria multiflora) and rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) were evaluated to determine their antimicrobial activity using the agar-well diffusion method. The values of inhibition zone diameter (IZD) for Candida albicans fungus and Staphylococcus aureus Gram-positive bacteria were determined. The bioactivities of two various extracts were studied, and the chemical composition of the extracts were identified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) technique. The results of the test showed that at concentrations of 10% and 40% thyme extract, the values of IZD were 12.5 mm and 23.3 mm, respectively, against the growth of S. aureus, which were higher than C. albicans (7.0 mm and 22.5 mm, respectively). The rosemary extract at concentrations of 20% and 60% showed lower antibacterial activity against S. aureus (4.7 mm and 8.7 mm IZD, respectively) and lower antifungal activity against C. albicans (12.2 mm and 1.7 mm IZD, respectively). At a concentration of 40% thyme extract, the highest antibacterial (23.3 mm IZD) and antifungal (22.5 mm IZD) activities were observed. The GC/MS analysis showed that carvacrol (52.3%), linalool L (16%), and thymol (9.6%) were the main components of thyme extract, while in the rosemary extract β-amyrone (18.0%), verbenone (8.0%), and 1,8-cineole (7.26%) were the major constituents.

The study aimed to determine the effect of prickly pear cactus extract in inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcusaureus, Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans. The laboratory experimental study using diffusion method. Theconcentration of the prickly pear cactus fruit extract used was 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%, whereas bacterial samplesderived from the laboratory of Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Hasanuddin. The observation ofseveral concentrations showed a decrease in the number of colonies contained S.aureus, S.mutans, C.albicanssignificant with increasing concentrations of the prickly pear cactus fruit extract. From these observations, thelargest inhibitory concentration present in a concentration of 100%. The conclusion is the fruit of the prickly pearcactus extract can inhibit the growth of S.aureus, S.mutans, and C.albicans. The higher the concentration of theextract, the more reduced the growth of S.aureus colonies, S.mutans, and C.albicans and vice versa.

ABSTRACT Sponges are a component of coral reef biota. These sea animals are known to contain compounds that have the potential to be developed in the field of medicine, including as an antimicrobial. This study aims to determine the antimicrobial activity of Phyllospongia lamellosa sponge against the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Candida albicans collected in the waters of Tumbak, Posumaen District, Southeast Minahasa. The antimicrobial activity test was carried out by agar diffusion method. The results showed that the extract and fraction of Phyllospongia lamellose had antimicrobial activity seen in the inhibition zone formed around the paper disk against the test microbes. Ethanol extrack and fraction from Phyllospongia lamellosa sponge showed the greatest antimicrobial activity against Candida albicans with an average value of 13,33 mm was categorized as strong , than in Staphylococcus aureus with an average value of 13 mm is categorized as strong and on Escherichia coli 11 mm categorized as strong. Keywords  :Phyllospongia lamellosa, antimicrobial activity, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans ABSTRAK Spons merupakan salah satu komponen biota penyusun terumbu karang.  Hewan laut ini diketahui mengandung senyawa- senyawa yang berpotensi untuk dikembangkan dalam bidang pengobatan, diantaranya sebagai antimikroba. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui aktivitas antimikroba spons Phyllospongia Lamellosa terhadap pertumbuhan Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli dan Candida albicans yang diambil pada perairan Tumbak Kecamatan Posumaen, Minahasa Tenggara. Uji aktifitas antimikroba dilakukan dengan metode difusi agar. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak dan fraksi spons Phyllospongia lamellose memiliki aktifitas antimikroba dilihat zona hambat yang terbentuk disekitar cakram kertas terhadap mikroba uji. Ekstrak etanol dan fraksi dari Spons Phyllospongia lamellosa menunjukkan aktivitas antimikroba paling kuat terhadap candida albicans dengan nilai rata-rata 13,33 mm dikategorikan kuat, kemudian pada Staphylococcus aureus dengan nilai rata-rata 13 mm dikategorikan kuat, dan pada Escherichia coli 11 mm dikategorikan kuat. Kata Kunci :  Phyllospongia lamellosa, aktivitas antimikroba, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans

Antibacterial activity of Moringa oleifera Lam. stem bark has been tested against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The extraction of Moringa oleifera Lam. stem bark was used maceration method with methanol solvent and has obtained extract yield of 6.1%. The antibacterial activity test of Moringa oleifera stem bark extracts used a well diffusion method. The concentration of Moringa oleifera stem bark extract was varied to four concentrations of 1% 2% 3% 4% (w/v). The inhibition zone of methanol extract of Moringa oleifera stem bark against Staphylococcus aureus at extract concentrations of 1%, 2%, 3%, and 4% was 10.08 mm, 11.8 mm, 15.00 mm, and 17.02 mm, respectively. The methanol extract of Moringa oleifera stem bark at concentrations of 1%, 2%, 3%, and 4% could also inhibition of Escherichia coli growth with inhibition zone of 14.01 mm, 16.50 mm, 17.09 mm, and 17.10 mm, respectively. Anti-microbial and anti-fungal activity of different solvent extracts of Acalypha indica (Euphorbeace family) was tested against bacterial pathogens (Pseudomonasaeruginosa, E.Coli, KlebsiellaPneumonia and Staphylococcus aureus) and fungal strains (Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger, Candida tropicalis andCandida kefyr) using the Agar Well diffusion method . It was observed that all the extracts showed positive activity) against bacteria and fungi. Ethanolic extract of Acalypha indica showed more potency against Staphylococcus aureus with an inhibition zone of12.46 (mm) and Methanolic extract exhibited higher activity against E.coli with an inhibition zone of11.26 (mm). Ethanolic extract of Acalypha indica showed prominent antifungal activity against candida albicans with an inhibition diameter of 12.53 (mm) and Aspergillus niger with a diameter of 9.21 (mm) when compared to other solvent extracts. Erythromycin and Ketoconazole were used as positive standards for antimicrobial and anti fungal experiments. In the present study, Ethanol extract showed a varying degree of inhibition to the growth of tested organisms compared to Methanol, Acetone and Chloroform against Bacteria and Fungi. The results confirmed the presence of antibacterial and antifungal compounds in shade dried extracts of Acalypha indica against human pathogenic organisms.

The Gnetum gnemon can be used as a medicine that has the function of anti-bacterial. The chemical content inside which is anti-bacterial is flavonoids and tannins. This study aims to find out the antibacterial from the ethanol extract of melinjo leaves can inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus mutans with a concentration of 300 mg/ml, 400 mg/ml, and 500 mg/ml. The test of anti-bacterial activity for the growth Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus mutans is done by using the disc diffusion method. The results showed that melinjo leaf contains an alkaloid, flavonoid, tannin, steroid and saponin compounds. The results of the simplicia powder characteristics obtained a total ash content of 7.495%, ash content insoluble in acid 0.785%, ethanol-soluble extract 4.324%, water-soluble extract 17.690%. The results of the antibacterial activity test of the ethanol extract of melinjo leaves obtained can inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus mutans namely at a concentration of 300 mg/ml, 400 mg/ml, and 500 mg/ml into the medium inhibition zone category. Ethanol extract of melinjo leaves has antibacterial activity against the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus mutans with an average diameter of inhibition zone of 9.7 mm (medium category) against Staphylococcus aureus and 6.7 mm (medium category) against bacteria Streptococcus mutans.

Oral pathogenic microorganisms have been the cause of dental plaques, dental caries, as well as gingival and periodontal diseases [2]. Streptococcus mutans is one of the main opportunistic pathogens of dental caries, which is responsible for the formation of dental plaque and caries [3]. Other microorganisms associated with this oral condition include Escherichia coli, S. aureus [4], and Candida species. C. albicans is the most frequent yeast isolated from the oral cavities with poor oral hygiene [2]. The formulation ingredients of commercial toothpastes are mostly chemical substances, such as fluoride and whitening agents [2]. The literature contains evidence regarding the adverse effects of fluoride and bleaching agents (e.g., peroxide-based agents) used in the commercial toothpastes [5]. With this background in mind, the present study aimed to formulate a polyherbal toothpaste without any A B S T RA C TBackground and Purpose: Herbal toothpastes are more secure and efficacious and less poisonous due to containing natural chemicals as compared with the synthetic toothpastes. The present study aimed to formulate a polyherbal toothpaste using accessible medicinal plants in Iran and evaluate its efficiency in the protection of oral hygiene and prevention of dental caries. Materials and Methods: The developed toothpaste was made of the leaf extracts of Artemisia dracunculus, Satureja khuzestanica (Jamzad), and Myrtus communis (Linn), combined at four different dilutions, namely 1:4 (25%), 1:1 (50%), 3:4 (75%), and (100%), with sterile distilled water. The product was tested against five microorganisms, including Streptococcus mutans, Lactobaccilus caseie, S. sanguis, S. salivarius, and Candida albicans, using agar well diffusion method. Results: After 24 h of incubation, the maximum mean diameters of inhibition zone against L. caseie and C. albicans were obtained as 17-30 and 10-25 mm, respectively. Furthermore, the minimum mean diameter of inhibition zone against S. salivarious was estimated as 15-20 mm. Conclusion: The formulated toothpaste showed potent inhibitory activities against Gram-positive bacteria and C. albicans. Introdução: A planta Banisteriopsis anisandra A. Juss é uma espécie medicinal pouco conhecida e estudada, mas já demonstrou potencial para utilização na odontologia. Objetivo: Avaliar a atividade antimicrobiana de B. anisandra e o potencial para interações medicamentosas com fármacos relacionados à saúde bucal. Material e métodos: Foi obtido o extrato etanólico bruto das folhas de B.anisandra, e diluições em série foram testadas contra Candida albicans (ATCC 10231), Streptococcus mutans (ATCC 25175), Streptococcus salivarius (ATCC 7073) e Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538). Como controle positivo foram utilizados os antibióticos ampicilina (10 μg/ml), amoxilina (10 μg/ml) e penicilina (30 μg/ml), para as cepas bacterianas; e o antifúngico cetoconazol (2 mg/ml), para a levedura. Compararam-se a eficiência e a sensibilidade do método de difusão em meio sólido e do método de difusão em meio líquido, e foi determinada a concentração inibitória mínima (CIM), assim como foram avaliadas as interações medicamentosas dos extratos com os antibióticos. Resultados: O método de microdiluição em caldo mostrou-se mais sensível que o método de difusão em disco, sendo, portanto, mais confiável, além de usar menos quantidade de material. Houve interação medicamentosa positiva dos extratos com os antibióticos e com o cetoconazol nas concentrações de 1:2 para o extrato. A bactéria S. aureus e a levedura C. albicans mostraram-se sensíveis ao extrato da planta na diluição 1:1 nos testes de difusão em disco, e o antibiótico penicilina não se revelou eficaz em nenhuma das bactérias testadas. Conclusão: O extrato etanólico de B. anisandra tem potencial antimicrobiano e interação medicamentosa com fármacos relacionados à saúde bucal. Existem raros estudos sobre as propriedades farmacológicas de B. anisandra, e os resultados são os primeiros relatos sobre sua atividade antimicrobiana em associação com antibióticos e antifúngicos.

Objective: The present study focused on synthesizing silver nanoparticles (AgNO3) using Moringa Oleifera seeds and Glycyrrhiza glabra stems. Methods: The synthesized AgNO3 were used to evaluate the antibacterial efficacy of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) by agar well diffusion method. AgNO3 were produced from silver nitrate using M. oleifera seeds and G. glabra stems. Results: AgNO3 were characterized using UV-visible spectroscopy at a wavelength of 400–460 nm. AgNO3 from G. glabra stems showed high anti- MRSA activity with 32 mm zone of inhibition, and M. oleifera seed extract showed 30 mm inhibition zone of inhibition against MRSA. Conclusion: The biologically synthesized AgNO3 can be used against MRSA.
