Purpose: Achieving employee participation in continuous improvement (CI) systems is considered as one of the success factors for the sustainability of those systems. Yet, it is also very difficult to obtain because of the interaction of many critical factors that affect employee participation. Therefore, finding ways of measuring all these critical factors can help practitioners manage the employee participation process accordingly.Design/methodology/approach: Based upon the existing literature, this paper presents a 4-Phase (9 steps) diagnostic tool to measure the main determinants associated with the implementation of CI systems affecting employee participation in improvement activities.Findings: The tool showed its usefulness to detect the main weaknesses and improvement opportunities for improving employee participation in CI through the application in two different cases.Practical implications: This diagnostic tool could be particularly interesting for companies adopting CI and other excellence frameworks, which usually include a pillar related to people development inside the organization, but do not include tools to diagnose the state of this pillar.Originality/value: This diagnostic tool presents a user’s perspective approach, ensuring that the weaknesses and improvement opportunities detected during the diagnose come directly from the users of the CI system, which in this case are the employees themselves. Given that the final objective is to identify reasons and problems hindering employee participation, adopting this user’s perspective approach seem more relevant than adopting other more traditional approaches, based on gathering information from the CI system itself or from the CI managers.

Two methods of identifying language disordered children are examined. Traditional approaches require attention to relatively superficial morphological and surface syntactic criteria, such as, noun-verb agreement, tense marking, pluralization. More recently, however, language testers and others have turned to pragmatic criteria focussing on deeper aspects of meaning and communicative effectiveness, such as, general fluency, topic maintenance, specificity of referring terms. In this study, 54 regular K-5 teachers in two Albuquerque schools serving 1212 children were assigned on a roughly matched basis to one of two groups. Group S received in-service training using traditional surface criteria for referrals, while Group P received similar in-service training with pragmatic criteria. All referrals from both groups were reevaluated by a panel of judges following the state determined procedures for assignment to remedial programs. Teachers who were taught to use pragmatic criteria in identifying language disordered children identified significantly more children and were more often correct in their identification than teachers taught to use syntactic criteria. Both groups identified significantly fewer children as the grade level increased.

Knowledge management and continuous improvement are key success factors that are applied in organizations independently; However, there is a significant relationship between the two, therefore organizations that seek to be leaders in their sector must analyze them together. Considering that universities have a leading role and must transcend the expectations of our society, I have considered it pertinent to carry out this article whose purpose is to establish the relationship between Knowledge Management and Continuous Improvement in a Private University from Lima, Peru. It has a quantitative approach because statistical analysis was used to test what was established in the hypotheses. The design is non-experimental, cross-sectional, since information is presented as it occurs in reality and in a given time, it is transectional, correlational, because it measures and evaluates the relationship between the variables. The sample is made up of 45 individuals between heads of areas and school coordinators, to whom a questionnaire with 32 questions was applied, whose data were processed in the statistical program SPSS version 25. Finally, the significant relationship between management of the knowledge and continuous improvement, obtaining a Spearman Rho, 0.730, at the 1% level of significance. Likewise, the findings affirm that the phases of creating, storing, applying and transferring knowledge also have a significant relationship with continuous improvement.

In the article the essence and peculiarities of microimitational modeling are considered. The advantages of microimitational models over the statistics models are substantiated. Micro-simulation models, that prognosticate somehow dynamic changes in health and which are most appropriate to use in development and health research policy, such as POHEM, CORSIM and Sife Paths, are outlined. It is proposed to use elements of statistical and dynamic microimitation modeling, agent modeling and the concept of a life course for the estimation of the influence social and economic determinants. The synthetic model of population which has been formed on the basis of representative data sets of sample surveys of living conditions of households and economic activity of the population of the State Employment Service of Ukraine, as well as microdata of the Multicultural Survey of the Population of Ukraine (2012) and the Medical and Demographic Survey (2013). The generalized scheme of the method of microimulation modeling of the influence of social and economic determinants on the health status of the population of Ukraine has been developed. The influence of the main determinants on the health of certain age, gender and social and economic groups of the population is estimated on the basis of the methodology of synthetic data.

This article presents a new methodology that integrates Competitive Technical Intelligence with Blue Ocean Strategy. We explore new business niches taking advantage of the synergy that both areas offer, developing a model based on cyclic interactions through a process developed in two stages: Understanding opportunity that arise from idea formulation to decision making and strategic development. The validity of our approach (first stage) was observed in the evaluation of an exotic fruit, Anacardium Occidentale, in the South of the State of Veracruz, Mexico with the support of the university ITESM, Campus Monterrey. We identified critical factors for success, opportunities and threats. Results confirm the attractiveness of this crop.

This paper focuses, first, on presenting a tool designed as a methodological proposal to help the municipal administrations to improve their administrative processes. This is possible by taking into consideration the phases that integrates it (Planning, Organization, Integration, Direction and Control) in order to identify the steps of the process where there are failures. This, however, makes it possible to detect them, apply corrective measures, and ensure that they are able to carry out processes of continuous improvement. Secondly, the document presents a study in which a methodology was applied. Here, it could be documented that for the case of the municipalities of Tamasopo, Tamuín and Ciudad Valles in the State of San Luis Potosí, a lack of systematization was detected in the administrative processes. The results have allowed us to perceive a differentiated opinion between the perception that the Heads of Department have regarding the application of the Administrative Process and the opinion that operative workers have regarding the phases of planning, organization, integration, direction, and control.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to compare the practices of continuous improvement that are applied in medium and large manufacturing and service companies in two Latin American countries. At the same time, benefits and barriers experienced by these companies with regard to sustainability of continuous improvement are explored.Design/methodology/approachIn order to generate a comparative study between two Latin American countries, interviews were conducted with managers linked to continuous improvement in medium and large companies in the State of Puebla and the Metropolitan District of Quito, which are important areas in Mexico and Ecuador, respectively. Data were collected by means of document analysis, semi-structured interviews, and direct observation.FindingsCompanies in both countries identify the use of various techniques and/or tools for continuous improvement. The results of the empirical evidence show how the impact of the application of the techniques has been beneficial in economic and human terms. Thus, the exploratory study has permitted the identification of the drivers and inhibitors in the maintenance of continuous improvement.Research limitations/implicationsThe research is based on only two areas of the Latin American countries: Mexico and Ecuador. Their results can therefore not be generalized. The approach is applied in a specific environment, namely, the State of Puebla and the Metropolitan District of Quito. This study incorporates the perception of managers, directors, and/or supervisors involved in continuous improvement processes.Practical implicationsThis paper seeks to provide analytical input. The study is of great interest to researchers, managers, consultants, and professionals linked to projects of continuous improvement who wish to incorporate continuous improvement practices which are sustainable over time. A new managerial behavior is the basis of continuous improvement, where the training and development of the human resource increases the commitment to achieve organizational changes.Originality/valueThis research makes an empirical contribution to the literature through the understanding of practices of continuous improvement in a Latin American context, highlighting the factors that improve or impede the process of continuous improvement. Particularly in Mexico and Ecuador, the empirical evidence on this subject is still scarce despite the existence of theoretical academic literature.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to carry out the literature search on manufacturing organizations and total productive maintenance (TPM). This research aims at studying TPM attributes and barriers in line with the TPM framework for effective implementation of TPM. This study identifies the barriers in TPM implementation and the critical success factors (CSFs) for effective TPM implementation.Design/methodology/approachIn this manuscript, the study of TPM in the manufacturing sector has been considered a broad area of the research and emphasis on the TPM literature review, which primarily relates to the contribution of manufacturing sector and employment availability. Next sections covers TPM history, importance, justification, pillars, obstacles and TPM implementation procedure and models. Thereafter author identified the gaps in existing literature.FindingsThe existing literature shows that very few TPM implementation models are available for the manufacturing sector. The study also found that there is no systematically conducted large-scale empirical research which deals with TPM implementation. In order to bridge this gap, an investigation into the successful implementation of TPM in is truly needed. The finding of the literature shows that there is a need of TPM model specially developed for the manufacturing sector. The identified critical factors derived from the extensive literature review help to overcome the barriers for effective TPM implementation.Research limitations/implicationsThis review study is limited to Indian manufacturing industries. The identified TPM CSFs are based on the TPM pillars and their sub-factors. This cross-sectional study was based on the existing TPM model.Practical implicationsThis paper can increase the significance of TPM strategy, which could help managers of organizations to have a better understanding of the benefits of implementing TPM and therefore enable patient satisfaction within their organizations.Originality/valueThe literature review covers methodical identification of TPM barriers and critical factors for maintenance performance improvements. It allows the practitioners to apply these identified CSFs for TPM implementation to achieve an improvement in industrial performance and competitiveness.
