Abstract This paper investigates whether the impact of income on CO2 emissions is invariant to endogenously estimated threshold levels for the economic structure (ES) represented by value added in manufacturing, industry and services sector shares in GDP for a panel of 54 economies over the 1971–2017 period. Our panel smooth transition regression estimation results strongly suggest that the sensitivity of CO2 emissions to income is substantially much higher in countries with higher manufacturing and industry sector shares whilst it is much lower in servicified economies. Given the argument that manufacturing is the engine of growth, this finding may not necessarily downgrade the crucial importance of an industrial policy which places the manufacturing at the core. The empirical findings in this paper suggest that countries may better to design and implement a strategic and systematic industrial policy which promote the use of emission reduction technologies and encourage manufacturing and industrial sectors with lower carbon emissions.

Regional energy development and approaches are significant for China’s overall economic and social development. The GDP in Zhejiang province surpassed 6 trillion yuan in 2019, and its energy consumption reached 200 million tons of standard coal (tce), both of which are at the forefront of China. In order to explore the main factors of the increase in energy consumption in Zhejiang and provide essential references for energy saving and other provinces, this paper analyzes the total energy consumption and industrial sectors on the basis of the logarithmic mean divisia index (LMDI) model. Study results show that the economy’s scale is the most crucial factor affecting Zhejiang’s energy consumption, with a significant growth effect. In 2015, the scale effect increased energy consumption to the highest value of 14 million tce and then reduced it to 13 million tce in 2019. The impact of the population on energy consumption increased by 10 million tce from 2010 to 2019. Energy intensity reduces energy consumption by between 0.05 and 0.15 billion tce per year, which is the main factor in reducing energy consumption. The energy structure generally plays a weak positive role due to the different energy types. The decomposition of the energy consumption per unit of value added in the industrial sector showed that the intensity and structural effect primarily reduce energy consumption, for example, the metal smelting and rolling, textile printing and paper, electric power, heating, and other industries. According to the results, enterprises should enhance the intelligence and efficiency of dispatch management and emergency responses. Zhejiang should also accelerate an international oil and gas trading center and resource allocation base to reach its carbon-neutrality goal.

Subject. The study investigates the impact of shocks on the economic dynamics during recurring crises. Nevertheless, the impact of exogenous shocks may turn to be minor for GDP of some countries, while they cause unfavorable consequences for the economic development of others. Objectives. I herein identify factors of resilience in the Russian economy, referring to three different crises that took place in 2000–2020, by conducting a theoretical overview of the concept Economic Resilience and resilience factors of economic systems against different shocks. Methods. The decomposition of macroeconomic indicators is the principal method of research. The resilience of the Russian economy and other advanced economies was assessed by macroeconomic indicators related to trends in GDP and the unemployment level. I point out two groups of factors – the innate and acquired (adaptability). Results. During the global financial crisis in 2008, the Russian economy demonstrated its innate factors, such as the availability of considerable reserves and capital mobility between the financial and industrial sectors, as well as adaptive factors as part of the national anti-crisis policy. During the period of sanctions, the resilience of the Russian economy stemmed from the enormous potential of the industrial sector and R&D, considerable reserves for production development, which underlay the import substitution policy. Finally, in the outbreak of the 2020 crisis, Russia managed to handle the crisis much better than the leading countries of the world, since there is a prevalence of State-owned large business and the domestic localization of value added chains. Conclusions and Relevance. The study substantiated the objectivity of resilience factors of the Russian economy during multiple crises, i.e. a combination of financial, commercial, political and pandemic crises.

The objective of this study was to measure the level of cruise tourists' satisfaction as well as the relationship between satisfaction, recommendation, return intention, and expenditure. Also, the impact of factors such as nationality, length of the visit, and age on the level of expenditure was measured. An empirical approach for data collection was followed and a total of 152 questionnaires were collected from cruise tourists visiting the capital city of Oman, Muscat, as cruise liners anchor at Sultan Qaboos Port. Results of the regression analysis supported the existence of a causal relationship between satisfaction with destination attributes, overall satisfaction, recommendation, return intention, and expenditure. It was found that the average expenditure varies according to age and length of the visit. Recommendations for policy makers were suggested on how to increase the role of cruise tourism in strengthening the economy.

The paper represents the analysis of the impact on the exhibition and trade fair activity of the Russian Federation during crisis situations caused by external factors. The author examined the major anticrisis measures, industry statistics and the main trends in the postcrisis phase. The fundamental role of the exhibition industry as a tool is caused by stimulation of economic sectors recovery from the crisis due to the multiplier effect. The particular relevance of the article is justified by a comprehensive study of the state of the industry during the current crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The author provides an overview of main government support measures for the industry and explains factors that have reduced some of these measures. Also, the author examined in detail activities of non-governmental organizations and associations of the exhibition industry in lobbying for the provision of state support and educational and legal assistance to Russian exhibition companies. Thus, the importance of coordinating activities of all participants in the exhibition industry and, in particular, further consolidation of interaction at the level of industry associations, becomes apparent. Besides, the author suggests a number of measures, such as highlighting exhibitions, trade fairs and congresses from the list of mass events following the example of Germany, introducing insurability for exhibition organizers in case of postponement or cancellation of events due to emergency circumstances, standardizing public health and hygiene rules. Their practical application should mitigate the way out of the current situation.
