Information and communication technology (ICT) is applied to support the creation of electronic markets (e-markets). Electronic data interchange (EDI) is the exchange of structured data between information systems of different organizations. EDI is often considered as the first step towards e-markets. In the course of time EDI was extended and interorganizational information systems (IOS) were used to create electronic marketplaces. IOS serve as intermediaries between buyers and sellers. Probably the most well known examples of IOSs are airline reservation systems, which are closed systems having typically a limited number of participants.

Developments in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) enable information systems to intermediate between sellers and buyers in electronic markets (e-markets). A business engineering methodology can be of help to design and develop e-markets by providing insight into current market and potential e-market structures, matching mechanisms and processes, and by evaluating the implications of e-markets. In this chapter, a first concept of an interactive, discrete-event, agent-based simulation approach for the analyses and design of e-markets is presented and evaluated.

This study empirically examines determinants of E-commerce adoption by Malaysian Small and Medium-sized Enterprises. Research model for this study was drawn on the literature on information and communication technology, Information system, and electronic data interchange. This study tested seven hypotheses on factors that influence e-commerce adoption with empirical data from a sample of 200 SMEs in Malaysia. The findings show that relative advantage, compatibility, organizational readiness, manager's characteristics, and security have significant impact on e-commerce adoption. The study provides a clear understanding of manager's perception about e-commerce adoption in their businesses. This study is important in a global context, as SMEs in Malaysia are going for exporting their product in the global marketplace. Santrauka Šiame straipsnyje pristatomas empirinis tyrimas, kuriame analizuojamas e.-komercijos principų taikymas Malaizijos smulkiojo ir vidutinio verslo įmonėse. Tyrimo modelis pristatytas šiame straipsnyje, buvo sudarytas remiantis mokslinės literatūros analize. Autoriai iškėlė 7 hipotezes, kurias vėliau bandė pagrįsti. Iškeltoms hipotezėms patvirtinti (arba paneigti) buvo atliekamas tyrimas. Tyrime dalyvavo 200 smulkiojo ir vidutinio verslo įmonių, taikančių savo veikloje e.-komercijos principus. Pristatyto tyrimo metu buvo nustatyta ir tai, kad sėkmingam e-komercijos principų taikymui didelę reikšmę turi ne tik technologiniai sprendimai, bet ir žmogiškasis veiksnys. Autoriai pažymi, kad šis tyrimas yra labai svarbus Malaizijoje įsikūrusioms smulkiojo ir vidutinio verslo įmonėms, nes jame buvo vertinamos tarptautinio verslo perspektyvos globalizacijos kontekste.

Electronic Government (e-Government) has been implemented in Indonesia at both the central and regional levels, where Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is integrated with public services in order to increase effectiveness, efficiency, and transparency. Surakarta has succeeded in creating an application that operates online which can be used to access population administration services, namely Dukcapil application (Dukcapil dalam genggaman in Indonesian term). This application is designed to make it easier for some people of Surakarta who are still experiencing problems if they have to directly access population administration services, whether constrained in terms of time, energy, and cost. As part of population administration services and population information systems, user satisfaction is important for Dukcapil Dalam Genggaman because it is related to the quality of the services provided and the success of implementing the application. User satisfaction can be influenced by several factors. Therefore, this study will examine the factors that influence user satisfaction of Dukcapil Dalam Genggaman. These factors were adapted from a model for measuring the level of user satisfaction with information systems, namely End User Computing Satisfaction (EUCS), which measures satisfaction based on content, accuracy, format, ease of use, and timeliness. This study aims to determine the effect of these factors on user satisfaction of Dukcapil Dalam Genggaman. The questionnaire was distributed to users of Dukcapil Dalam Genggaman and successfully obtained a sample of 107 users. The data analysis used is multiple linear regression. It was found that content, accuracy, ease of use, and timeliness have a significant effect on user satisfaction of Dukcapil Dalam Genggaman. Meanwhile, the format does not have a effect on user satisfaction of Dukcapil Dalam Genggaman. Based on these findings, the Department of Population and Civil Registration of Surakarta is recommended to develop Dukcapil Dalam Genggaman by focusing on the factors that affect user satisfaction of the application.

Two interacting issues have recently been shown to theoretically impact communication technology adoption: the willingness of business partners to use various communication technologies and a firm’s operational capacity to accommodate the product/service demands of these potential partners. This study examines the relationship between these two issues and Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), a long standardized communication technology that has been underutilized by business organizations. Our findings suggest that the technological compatibility concerns of firms considering EDI adoption differ depending on if they are product or service oriented. Capacity limitations are found to significantly moderate these compatibility effects. The implications for managers of electronic commerce technologies are discussed.

Information systems that link businesses for the purpose of inter-organizational transfer of business transaction information (inter-organizational information systems, or IOIS) have been in use since the 1970s (Lankford & Riggs, 1996). Early systems relied on private networks, using electronic data interchange (EDI) or United Nations EDIFACT standards for format and content of transaction messages. Due to their cost and complexity, the use of these systems was confined primarily to large companies, but low-cost Internet commercialization has led to much more widespread adoption of IOIS. Systems using the Internet and the World Wide Web are commonly referred to as B2B (business-to-business) systems, supporting B2B electronic commerce.

The multilevel framework proposed in this chapter is particularly useful for research involving complex and multilevel interactions (i.e., interactions involving individuals, groups, organizations and networks at the community, regional or societal levels). The framework is influenced by three theoretical perspectives. The core foundation comes from the structurationist view of technology, a stream of research characterized by the application of structuration theory to information systems (IS) research and notably influenced by researchers like Orlikowski (2000) and Walsham (2002). In order to extend the framework to encompass research at the community/societal levels, concepts from social shaping of technology and from contextualism have been integrated. Beyond sharing a number of ontological and epistemological assumptions, these three streams of thinking have been combined because each of them offers particular concepts that are of great value for the kind of studies the authors wish to put forward: investigating the influence of information and communication technology (ICT) from a structurationist standpoint at levels that go beyond the organizational one.

In this paper we argue that electronic data interchange (EDI) should not be viewed simply as a technological infrastructure, but as a technology which may enable an organization taking a strategic view to derive comparative advantage from utilizing it as part of a process of business re-engineering – in other words, as a sociotechnical entity. We suggest that strategic information systems planning (SISP) is a suitable superstructure within which EDI implementation may be considered from an appropriate strategic, as opposed to tactical, perspective. Finally we describe the theory and current practice of SISP and present guidelines for its application in relation to EDI.

Tourism, a multi-dimensional and multi-faceted activity with diverse social, cultural, economic and ecological impacts, got evolved as one of the largest and most significant economic sectors in the world. The lure of tourism as an engine of economic growth and diversification has been urging each and every country in the world to develop and promote it in the most possible manner (Dileep, 2018). As per the current projections, tourism is tend to grow further and it will remain as one of the most vibrant, growing and economically useful activities in the world having wide social and cultural ramifications in the years to come as well. Being an amalgam of industries, this sector includes a diverse range of industries like, intermediaries; transportation; accommodation; entertainment and recreation; shopping; hospitality; and infrastructure. Complex linkages and interrelationships exist among the various individual sectors of the tourism industry. The post second world war era has witnessed tremendous growth of tourism and in the same era has recorded the evolution and growth of information and communication technology as well. Information Technology has become one of the most fundamental and vital components of the successful businesses and organizations and is a major facilitator. In the growth of tourism as a major social phenomenon in the 21st century, Information and communication technology (ICT) too had played significant roles. Indeed, the relationship between tourism and ICT was symbiotic as well, since the latter sector got many opportunities for the application of it in the tourism sector, like in the air transportation which was a pioneer in developing transaction systems for handling the cumbersome booking data in the 1950s and 60s. Information systems for the core of ICT applications in businesses and organisations. Tourism Sector too has been using different types of information systems intensively in the international scenario. Kerala, one of the late entrants in the international tourism, has turned to be successful international tourist destinations within a few decades of time. The number of tourism arrivals has been registering consistent growth and the industry got expanded exponentially in Kerala. To compete globally, tourism of anywhere requires a variety of information systems. Kerala tourism industry is also not an exception to this. In this context, a study on the current usage of information systems in the tourism sector in Kerala seems inevitable. The study has to focus upon the types of information systems used by the tourism industry in Kerala, efficiency as well as the impacts of the usage of such information systems by the industry, comparing the scenario with the international standards and also to discuss about the future to suggest suitable solutions to look ahead to have more competence by the Kerala tourism
