Creating a Firewall Against Unethical Behaviours in Open and Distance Education Practice

The current process of democratizing education has inevitably led to the explosive demands by the citizens of the different countries for unrestricted admission into the conventional tertiary institutions as full time students. Unfortunately, the universities have no absorptive capacity to meet the demands due to many perennial factors. In order to meet these enormous requirements, it therefore becomes paramount for universities to restructure, re-engineer and reform. The paradigm shift therefore necessitates the repositioning of tertiary institutions in order to effect the change from “selective learning” to “lifelong learning” and from what “we offer” to what “you need” and therefore, simultaneously develop the skills of “learning to learn,” especially in their clients. Where many distance learning institutions (DLIs) have become relevant in the current dispensation is in their ability to create wider accessibility to education through the open, distance and flexible operation, which allows for learning and earning going pari-passu in meeting the needs and aspirations of their heterogeneous clientele. Paradoxically, however, the majority of the world population who are ignorant of the operation and value of distance education generally, view its products as well as its programmes, not only as useless but also as inferior when compared to those of the conventional universities. Their opaque arguments for casting aspersions on distance education institutions (DEIs) may centre on their individual doubts on the quality and massification, as well as the incidence of possible masquerading identity. Closely related to this is the general notion of whether the DEI or ODL, in any way, adhere to professional ethics or academic standards. Adherence to high academic standards, which is informed through the doggedly pursued predetermined ethics, has a predictable relationship to professional behaviour and academic integrity of the ODL, at least comparatively. Ethical principles are known indexes in organizational direction and commitments, but its lapses erode known standards in academic and research ventures, as well as the quality of community service.

Abstract Distance learning and e-learning have significantly developed in recent years. It is also due to changing educational requirements, especially for adults. The article aims to show the advantages and disadvantages of distance learning. Examples of the 20-year use of the distance learning form of computer science describe the difficulties associated with the implementation and implementation of this form of teaching. The results of students in the full-time and distance form of teaching in the bachelor’s study of computer science are compared. Long-term findings show that distant students have significantly lower scores in the first years of study than full-time bachelor students. In the following years of study, the differences diminish, and students’ results are comparable. The article describes the possibilities of improving the quality of distance learning.

<p>Mass higher education is a huge force to be reckoned with and its existence, already in the expansion of tertiary institutions is undeniable. This study will focus on three countries: Lebanon, Kenya and Oman. The purpose of this study is to evaluate mass tertiary education progress in these countries. It will synthesize data results of gross enrollment ratios, demographics, internationalization and GDP per capita of these countries which we will use as indicators of the progress and direction that mass tertiary education is taking. The principal conclusions of our data will reveal that all 3 countries are experiencing progress only at different rates for varied and different reasons. The findings of this paper are significant as they will aid in informing the governments of the specific countries and other stakeholders who invest in higher education to understand the challenges hindering progress and ensuring that world class academic standards are upheld.</p>

Politecnico di Torino has been actively experimenting distance education scenarios since 1992, through the development of innovative methodologies and tools. The real challenge today, however, is to move from small settings to a large-scale system able to suit the needs of a broad number of users belonging to different categories, from traditional students to part-time or full-time workers, from students living far from Torino to people with participation restriction due to disability. The emphasis then, is not only on the innovation of methodologies and technologies, but on their effective and economically sustainable use in a complex and multi-faceted setting. This chapter describes the services introduced in this direction and gives a preliminary evaluation after the first year of delivery.

SummaryInterviews with 103 middle-class wives on their family building experiences and use of birth control techniques show this highly educated group to be effective family planners in comparison with other social groups. The wives developed clear ideas early in marriage about family size, timing and spacing, formulated with reference to sets of beliefs about the transmission of cultural advantage from parents to children, and their social responsibility in relation to world population levels. Ideas about the spacing of children and desired family size appear to be influenced by the women’s orientation towards returning to employment, but their relatively late age of terminating full-time education has had remarkably little effect on the timing of either marriage or the first child’s birth. Female contraceptive methods were most popular with this sample, and their relative effectiveness as family planners may be explained by their preference for the more reliable techniques and high level of motivation to use them efficiently. Variations in patterns of contraceptive usage noted between this and other studies are probably a function of age differences in the groups of women surveyed.

Instructional designers and educators recognize the potential of mobile technologies as a learning tool for students and have incorporated them into the distance learning environment. However, little research has been done to categorize the numerous examples of mobile learning in the context of distance education, and few instructional design guidelines based on a solid theoretical framework for mobile learning exist. In this paper I compare mobile learning (m-learning) with electronic learning (e-learning) and ubiquitous learning (u-learning) and describe the technological attributes and pedagogical affordances of mobile learning presented in previous studies. I modify transactional distance (TD) theory and adopt it as a relevant theoretical framework for mobile learning in distance education. Furthermore, I attempt to position previous studies into four types of mobile learning: 1) high transactional distance socialized m-learning, 2) high transactional distance individualized m-learning, 3) low transactional distance socialized m-learning, and 4) low transactional distance individualized m-learning. As a result, this paper can be used by instructional designers of open and distance learning to learn about the concepts of mobile learning and how mobile technologies can be incorporated into their teaching and learning more effectively.

The paper has discussed the design of online education platform and its operation mechanism based on MVC. This system consists of three subsystems: a subsystem for system administrators to manager, a subsystem for students to learn and a subsystem for teachers to teach. The operation mechanism of the system is also discussed. The designed platform is the application in modem distance education practice. It has great importance to improve teaching techniques and education quality in University. It can be imagined that the application will help promote learning and managing efficiency of the overall society.

The article analyzes personal experience in distance learning using the Microsoft Teams application. The author defines distance education as a form of interaction between a teacher and a student and a student’s independent work using information technology in accordance with the educational program. The article presents the results of the author’s sociological study, conducted with the help of qualitative and quantitative methods of information collection. 30 free unstructured interviews and a small questionnaire survey were conducted. There were 250 respondents. The results of the survey lead to the conclusion that as a forced measure, most participants in the educational process took this type of training positively. In the future, distance education can be recommended for use in full-time and part-time educational formats.

As quality assurance systems become embedded, competitive institutions are seeing their futures in quality enhancement, in a continued commitment to improvement. This paper discusses quality signals that may be used to enhance course quality in on-line distance education. Analysis proceeds under five headings: pedagogies; promoting complex achievements; changing concepts of quality; designs for re-use; and new partnerships. Recurrent themes are: A rich and differentiated view of learning leads to a rich and differentiated view of quality; Quality courses are associated with the quality of affordances for learning; Conceptions of quality have been changing; e-learning is creating new conceptions of quality; Quality in higher education practice in a decade’s time is likely to be different again. Universities that cling to established views will be at risk from their global commercial competitors.

: Distance education has become widely used both in Russia and abroad in recent decades. A particularly powerful impetus to distance education technology development and spread was given by the coronavirus pandemic in 2019. To improve learning efficiency in the system of distance education, it was required to refine various and accessible forms of education. It was also necessary to make a wider use of new educational technologies. The purpose of this study is to analyze the use of the latest educational technologies in the distance learning of students in the disciplines of the Earth Sciences direction at a technical university, as well as to form a modern educational space in online learning and stimulate students' independent work based on the assignments supervised by teachers. The study described in this paper deals with the following application features of distance learning at Irkutsk National Research Technical University: the presentation specifics of the theory and the introduction forms of material for laboratory works, choice of the most effective teaching aids, methodology for the current and final control of students' knowledge. Irkutsk National Research Technical University has chosen Moodle from a wide variety of distance learning systems. The advantage of this system is the ability to perform laboratory, practical and course works, which is important for a technical university, also to conduct tests, the results of which can be monitored by both teachers and students in an electronic gradebook. The distance learning system turned out to be more multisided, but more laborious than in-person training. Moreover, it is also complicated by a number of technical problems. The distance learning process requires the establishment of a certain parity of interests, abilities and opportunities between the teaching (professor/lecturer) and the learning (student) parties. The distance learning system has a number of features that should be taken into account when introducing theoretical and lecture material, which requires a more rigorous selection of files or their conversion into less heavy ones, as well as conciseness and clarity of material presentation. The use of virtual laboratories for carrying out laboratory works, availability of distance technologies for training disabled students and corresponding students is gaining great importance. The research results imply that today distance learning is a necessary part of the educational system along with in-person (full-time) or correspondent (part-time) training and one of the main goals of modern distance learning is the ability to work with information and selfimprovement.
