In this chapter, the program of the Technical University Munich regarding implementation of technologies for an aging society is introduced. Various departments from the faculties of both technology and medicine are working jointly to actualize a technological basis for the development of assistance devices. Industrialized countries such as Japan and Germany will be facing an extreme demographic shift over the next 15 years. More than half of the population will be over 50 years of age. Belief in technological progress – initiated by the innovations of computer and the Internet – harbors the risk that the time required for necessary technological advancements is being significantly underestimated. This chapter describes the motivation and the concept of hardware architecture for implementation of assistance devices and for integration of pre-existing (or concurrently developed) sensors and concepts.

Background: The development of digital imaging systems for radiology in combination with the possibility to transfer large quantities of data over the Internet has increased the interest in teleradiology. Transferring nighttime examinations to an evaluation center in a daytime zone may provide improved patient security, better working hours for radiologists, and reduced costs for emergency radiological services. Purpose: To evaluate the time required for transferring radiological information from Uppsala (Sweden) to Sydney (Australia). Material and Methods: A radiologist in Sydney reported on radiological examinations performed in Uppsala. The time required for downloading 75 examinations and returning 24 reports was registered. Results: Downloading was completed in <60 min for all conventional radiological examinations, but only 44% of computed tomography (CT) examinations with >65 images. Reports were completed in <10 min. Turnaround time was directly related to the time required for downloading the images. The Sydney report was available in Uppsala within 30 min of the in-house report in 79% of examinations. Conclusion: The main challenge for emergency teleradiology is the time required for downloading large volumes of data over the Internet.

Ways of disseminating(Verbreitungsmedien) information through different media have rapidly changed owing to technological progress, especially in the field of information and communication technologies. Reflecting the changes in terms of conditions of technological progress, communication methods, and abilities have also changed. On the Internet, contents with different expressions of difficulty are mixed even though they have almost the same contents. A user who intends to search for new things or unknown things may get confused and spend a lot of time in selecting contents that are understandable for them because there are large amounts of similar contents with different difficulties. Herein, The characteristics of relevant simplified corpora are critical for everybody. In this research, we propose a method to compare two types of documents with different difficulty, and select a characteristic related to simple of expression from various characteristics related to text. In our proposed method, thousands of text characteristics are compressed and converted by Non-negative Matrix Factorization(NMF), and a basis for characterizing the simplified document is selected. The proposed method combines the characteristics of the most conducted research using the characteristics of 32 types and 2,196 dimensions. We evaluated the text characteristics in the NMF Base of the results using a classifier. As a result of applying the proposed method to two kinds of environment white papers, it became clear that an effective basis can be selected. In Addtionally, We showed estimate of the causation relationships, Optimization of the parameter. Furthermore, We showed flexibility to other media.

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have been adopting the internet at a feverish pace. Recent studies have shown that up to 85% of SMEs in industrialized countries have web sites, yet less than half are utilizing these web sites to securely transact with their customers. Consumer media consumption is moving away from traditional media, like newspapers, to the internet. These revelations coupled with the growth of tools and techniques available to support online marketing, make it a perfect time for SMEs to market their web sites and ultimately succeed online. In this chapter we will present and support the hypothesis that SMEs should stop investing in their web site’s design and functionality and start investing in efforts to market their web sites online, no matter how lousy their web site may be in comparison to today’s standards. With the support of two case studies, illustrating the successful utilization of internet marketing by two very different SMEs, we will relate how a SME can effectively market their web site online. We will also discuss the tools and techniques available to help an SME successfully begin a journey of internet marketing.

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a valuable tool for the process and petroleum industries. CFD reduces development timescales and costs by replacing expensive and lengthy laboratory investigation with numerical predictions of processes. However, there are several reasons why some companies are unwilling to use CFD. These include the cost of the software and hardware, the need for in-house CFD expertise and the time required to solve complex simulations. CHAM has developed a solution to these problems, in the form of a Virtual Reality Interface linked via the Internet to powerful parallel-processor computers. Virtual reality makes CFD accessible to non-CFD experts and allows the engineer to concentrate on the solution of his problem. Remote computing makes it possible to access from a PC the necessary computing power to solve the problem. Several examples will be shown, demonstrating the application and benefits of the PHOENICS-VR interface and the advantages of remote computing to the process and petroleum industries.
